600k on a new pitch

Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere. There is a bit in the back of tonights Evening Standard suggesting it could cost us 600k for a new pitch. Apparently we have called on Yorkshire based pitch experts 'Premier Pitches' for help. I also noticed they quoted Nathan as being our groundsman. Where Is Paddy?

    The new pitch laid in the summer will be ready in time for our first match back in the Prem in August. .......after we win the playoff final at Wembley.

    There won't be enough time if we go up via the play offs, best we go straight up. Gives the pitch another two weeks to bed in.

    Let me get this right...

    The plan is to leave it until July, then make a late burst and go straight up in one of the two promotion spots? So the Play-off will be delayed until our promotion is confirmed, a week before next season starts! The winner plays at home to Man United the following week, the loser has a trip to Leyton Orient.

    Yes, where is Paddy? I thought I might see him out with his pitch fork tonight. I feel really sorry for the bloke, he is so dedicated to his work and treats the pitch like his baby. It must be soul destroying to him, as he is a great groundsman as he was a winger.

    Paddy was out there at half time forking the pitch and was chatting with Nathan at one point. I guess Paddy does not like the limelight or being interviewed and has delegated to his number two whom he might be grooming for when he eventually retires.

    They will be lucky if it only cost £600,000 to dig the whole pitch up, sort the drainage and relay. For Surrey county cricket club to do the out field cost £1000,000 and that was 5 years ago.

    Yes, I think it will be more than that figure as I've heard undersoil heating is going in as well.

    Wouldn't that have been a bigger area though? How many football pitches can you get into the Oval? 3 maybe?

    Twickenham would be a better example. £1.3m for new drainage, desso surface, and undersoil heating

    He certainly didn't like the limelight in that famous Big Match interview (on the Centenary DVD!)

    I still find that 28k vs 20k figure hard to believe, if the drainage ducts under the pitch or North Stand are blocked, then an 8k spent last summer may have bought better grass seed but wouldn't have fixed the fundamental problems, if we're planning to spend 600k this summer now!

    @killerandflash blimey that's going back a bit can't remember his reaction specifically but presumably he was more than happy to face the camera after he had set Hales up? Circumstances are a bit different now though.

    It's on the second disc of the DVD, both him and Killer looked very awkward, Paddy especially, spent most of the interview staring at his feet!

    Saracens artificial pitch cost £600k and that is guaranteed for 8 years - with dramatic cuts to the cost of maintenance. Not that I want to get into this debate again.

    You are right, it will cost a lot more to sort the drainage. That £6000 difference would of paid to dig a bit deeper into the surface. Instead for the last two summers all that was paid for was just for the top surface to be taken off leaving all the old root and thatch in the ground. The rain now has to work its way through all that crap even before it hits the drainage system !

    Ok in some parts very sticky in others so a very uneven roll of the ball which given the choice of playing it around or hoofing the latter becomes the safest option. Fine rain for last half hour or so and doubt whether dome went back up after the game however no home game scheduled at the moment until 8th Feb when home to Brum as Bnmth have 4th round cup match v Liverpool on 25 Jan.

    I really don't know what to say about the pitch but it is going to be a massive problem for the second half of the season. If we can get through against Oxford we will have the best part of 4 weeks until the next home game- Birmingham. Obviously a drainage and relay is not a viable solution mid season but Chris Wilder is right when he says it was a real leveller last night and I am not using it as an excuse for the performance- the players really don't seem to trust it at all which is going to be a huge problem for us.

    Last season they seemed to get used to it after a few games once conditions dried up in April but it is midwinter and will be wet for some time to come. I'm no pitch expert but can they not put some grass seed into it or lay down some turf and bed it in like they did with the penalty area last season? I know the ball does roll okay but it looks absolutely horrendous and I just don't know what the answer is with half a season to go. Thankfully there is going to be a drainage and pitch overhaul in the summer so we shouldn't have this problem again. I can't help but feel that this pitch issue- rather than the lack of signings- will be the legacy of two seasons of lack of investment by Slater & Jimenez.
