  • If the game is off - what a nightmare!
  • Maybe this has been covered, but if the ref today said it was unplayable, would the game be called off? Does he have the authority to call a game off before the actual ref sees it? I know games are called off in advance in certain situations but maybe another 24 hours would give the ground staff time to make it playable. We really are in a mess with this pitch for the next couple of months at least.
  • Absolutely belting down in South West London. Hope it doesnt make it over to Charlton!
  • Assuming we can keep this dome then we should be ok getting games on from now on. As someone mentioned earlier, after tomorrow night if one of us or Bournemouth win, we won't have another home game for almost a month.
  • Is a month enough time to sort the drains out and relay some turf?
  • One of the heaviest showers I've ever seen now coming down in Baker St. Not looking good!
  • nope why waste all that money on relaying the pith when if it gets the normal british weather it will still be the same as now, we need decent covers and a loyal and committed set of ground staff to keep going

    2 things from that video:
    - Nice to see Fulham helping out & lending us some equipment
    - They need to put some weights on the end to stop the dome flapping about!

Flappy thing allows air across the pitch so it dries more and less likely to suffer from fungal growth from stale air.

  • I hope its gonna be on but we shall see after the pitch inspection due when the ref turns up tomorrow

    Hope it's not Andy D'Urso !

According to Bradshaw in Newshopper the major work will be done in the summer:

“We are currently looking at the scale of renovation we can do and are totally committed to a full restoration. We will invest significantly in the summer.”

Spot on NLA 100 this I cannot envisage a scenario where I would go to a game elsewhere when we are playing it's football not car insurance buying
  • Interesting interview with Nathan Chapman. It certainly sows a seed of doubt in my mind about the ref's decision to call it off. On the other hand both managers agreed the pitch was unplayable, in public at any rate. It doesn't alter the fact that the drainage should have been sorted a while ago, but the decision can't have been a straightforward one!

    So

In hindsight people moaned that there wasn't a pitch inspection on Friday

Now they do a pitch inspection a day before the game....and people moan

Indeed. Only Charlton fans could do this...

  • Andy, Wilson was the happiest of the 2 mgrs. to not play, powell agreed with it as the pitch was not great and had areas where it was worse than others, but he also agreed with the games being played over xmas period where the pitch was the same his agreement means little tbh

  • Been hammering down all the train journey home. This weather is unbelieveable.

Really feel for the guy and for the club. They have been made to look foolish by one terrible decision by the referee - or, at least, one that was inconsistent compared to previous decisions, despite all the efforts that everyone has put in of late.

its great to be at a club that has the balls to answer those who condemned the poor feckas on Saturday

    laughing stock
    joke of a club
    a disgrace
    ashamed
    0-3 victory to Barnsley
    pull out of the cup
    sack them all
    Bradshaws fault
    the comms teams fault

have a word with yourselves watch the Video from Nathan Chapman, at least he has the balls to come out and say it how it was ,

I have to say that you called this right. The interview with Chapman is very instructive and it seems clear that he and the Club were very surprised by the decision of the referee. Also, credit to Bradshaw for apologising and not blaming the ref.

  • Good interview by Nathan Chapman who didn't look that comfortable in the beginning but got better as it progressed. It looks like he has not done too many interviews which is not surprising for ground staff but I think he did a good interview and explained things from the ground staff's perspective well. Nice to see Fulham helping out and lending some equipment.

Better communications from Charlton today. Steve Bradshaw's statement in the Newshopper was miles better than the club statement on Saturday.

The club advising of a major overhaul in the Summer “We are currently looking at the scale of renovation we can do and are totally committed to a full restoration. We will invest significantly in the summer.” That's good news. Not sure if that involves any work on the drains before then. Time will tell how the pitch survives over the next couple of months.

It tipped down very heavily in SE London around 6.00pm and it was heading Charlton way. The concern must be for any torrential rain that occurs around / during match time

You have to remember that the managers have nothing to gain and potentially a lot to lose from criticising the ref in this instance. The ref makes the decision whether the managers agree with him or not so its better to 'go along' with the decision as you will almost certainly see that ref again in a few weeks. Privately, CP was probably angry and the Barnsley people were happy they didn't have to play on a dodgy surface in the middle of a bad run with lots of injuries. Only my guess, of course.
  • Rain has just stopped in the last hour in Charlton but we had a proper downpour 5-6pm. I hope the balloon kept it off as it was pretty heavy.
  • Well done to Nathan Chapman.

That pitch looks fine. Only cloudbursts late afternoon tomorrow afternoon will kill the match.

Seemingly the ref called the Barnsley game off for mud.
  • Why did both managers agree with the ref? - if they disagreed with him, does it still get called off? If so, why even ask them?

Common sense says he values their opinions. If he's unsure, then perhaps he could be swayed if they both think it's fine or both thought it was not fine.
  • looking at the forecasts and that pitch the game is on tomorrow and i'll be prepared to have a charidee bet with anyone (except colin powell) that the match completes the 90 mins tomorrow night...

gutted i cant make it , we're on a roll

I did hear that the ref arrived at 12, looked at it in a pair of shoes and dropped the ball from knee height in the worst part of the pitch and wasn't happy. He decided to ask the the managers and would of played it if they both agreed. CP was happy to play. They then had to wait for DW to arrive at 1 and he didn't wanna play so Ref called it off.

I wonder if other posters will offer congratulations instead of criticism (yet) again?
