Why did both managers agree with the ref? - if they disagreed with him, does it still get called off? If so, why even ask them?

I did hear that the ref arrived at 12, looked at it in a pair of shoes and dropped the ball from knee height in the worst part of the pitch and wasn't happy. He decided to ask the the managers and would of played it if they both agreed. CP was happy to play. They then had to wait for DW to arrive at 1 and he didn't wanna play so Ref called it off.
Possibly because he (DW) had four key players out.

NWCorner has excellent sources on this so I believe what he says.

If that was true (which I doubt) then Powell should have said he was happy to play.

Don't they get fined if they question or criticise the ref or is that just after games?

He should of done you are right, but as we saw last week with Powellys comments about the previous regime, what he says in private and what he says in public might be two different things.

I usually bow down to your superior wisdom, but on this one Henry I would have to disagree. The ref is the sole arbitrator when it comes to pitch inspection and a match can not be postponed because either one, or even both managers don't want to play.

However, If this is true then we should go public with it & tell Barnsley they can stick any requests for compensation from their fans where the sun don't shine.

This isn't entirely true. Take the Leeds game for example

This isn't entirely true. Take the Leeds game for example, Ref wanted it off at 2.15, Steve Bennett arrives who's assessing him, disagrees with him, tells him to delay ok it's gonna stop rainin etc and the game gets played. To be honest it would of been played 10 years ago without anyone batting an eyelid. Health & Safety gone mad !

  • Wow if that's true, Danny Wilson has stitched us up there.
  • Let's hope we won't have a case of a local official saying yes and the actual offcial saying no.

It's all a bit he said, she said and you are never going to hear the true story. It's sad to see & hear people slaughtering the club etc though, it never used to be like that, it was all in it together. Reading all the posts about Saturday, NLA is pretty much spot on.

    .

I'd say it was how things are in general nowadays, not just Charlton specific. The disappointing nature of how things have evolved over the last year or so I think just seemed to come to a head on Saturday. At the time it just seemed a farce on so many different levels.

I've not caught up yet with the things released today which I'm sure are more enlightening. Let's hope Saturday proves to be a turning point. I know there are just as many supporters on here that will praise when applicable as those who will criticise, let's hope we can have another spell sometime soon when they become the dominant voices again.

Obviously it's the ref's decision. But if the ref (or you or I for that matter) is 50/50 whether it should go ahead, common sense says, you would ask the manager's opinions.

If both wanted to play I'd play & if neither wanted to play I wouldn't.

If one wanted to play and one didn't then I'd make my own mind up.

    Surely, common sense isn't it.
  • No point having an inspection today when there's loads of rain forecast overnight. Why not just do the inspection at lunchtime tomorrow before Oxford fans have to travel

The important thing about getting the pitch inspected today is that it shows that the ground staff have been able to get it into a playable condition and it's not irredeemably messed up. If they take the covers off at 4 tomorrow and it then pelts it down for 3 hours straight an the ref calls the game off at 7, they can point to today's inspection as proof that it's down to the wet weather not a lack of preparation.

As usual, AFKA has summed up the situation succinctly & , IMHO, correctly.

I have to hold up my hands and admit I may have reacted a tad OTT on Saturday. Disappointment of another week without football, of a wasted day ( and I'm retired !) but most of all, on reflection, a great deal of concern about the lack of communication from our Club. The Trust, the FF and senior officials have worked together over the past 12 months to re-open lines of communication between supporters & our Club and it has proved to be a productive & positive relationship - so on a personal level, there was frustration & even anger. I am a staunch believer in openness & what appeared to have occurred that day made me question the minor role I play in proceedings.

In hindsight, maybe I should have "kept the faith" ....and listened to nla. He does have the knack of taking emotion out of a situation & substituting common sense.

Today, we have been made aware of the facts but unfortunately the 48 hours that elapsed between the postponement & the explanation allowed us time to give our imaginations free reign......and this in turn can lead to making those mountains out of molehills. However, in our defence, m'lud, I have to say that this is primarily because we love this football club - and love can make you do strange things( so they say!)

In "the light of day" and with hindsight, maybe most of us wish we had reacted differently, but we are only human. We might also consider that those with their hands on the tiller at the Club may also harbour that same wish....

So, I return to AFKA's words of wisdom. We should continue to criticise if we think that criticism is warranted but that should be constructive criticism. And, we should also consider that everyone thrives on being patted on the back when they've clearly done a good job. For me, that applies both on & off the field of play.

Let's hope that lessons have been learned by all concerned & we can move on now...

    and upwards !

Yes, the final decision is the refs and rightly so but as NWC and CE have pointed out they can and do listen to the managers (or their superiors) before making that decision.

    Good interview by Nathan Chapman

Better communications from Charlton today. Steve Bradshaw's statement in the Newshopper was miles better than the club statement on Saturday.

The club advising of a major overhaul in the Summer “We are currently looking at the scale of renovation we can do and are totally committed to a full restoration. We will invest significantly in the summer.”

I wonder if other posters will offer congratulations instead of criticism (yet) again?
Why? When I moved I found I needed a new roof, something the surveyor had missed. I didn't expect congratulations for getting a new one.

  • The new owners brought the club knowing the pitch was crap! It's been published enough!
  • If the weather is as good in Charlton as it is down here then there is no way the game will be off tonight, glorious sunshine and blue skys.

  • No early inspection by the referee, as pitch is deemed to be fine. He will inspect at normal time (prob a few hours before).

Charlton’s FA Cup game against Oxford United remains on course to go ahead, as planned, on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

A pitch inspection was held on Monday afternoon by Football League official Charles Breakspear, who confirmed there was no grounds to call off the cup tie.

The inspection took place under the MacLeod cover, which allows hot air to circulate above the playing surface and protects it from rain. The cover has been in place since Saturday afternoon.

Breakspear has subsequently had a conversation with fellow official Stephen Martin, who will take charge of the third-round tie on Tuesday evening.

Martin was reassured over the condition of the Valley surface, which was once again protected from the elements overnight on Monday by the cover, and fully expects the match with Oxford to take place.

The official will therefore arrive at the ground and conduct his pre-match checks at the same time as he would before any other fixture.

The MacLeod cover was scheduled to be taken down at 4pm on Tuesday afternoon, but will now be taken down in the morning following improved weather in the SE7 area.

Dismantling the surface earlier in the day, with no risk of adverse conditions, allows the surface to dry naturally and gives the Addicks ground staff opportunity to conduct further maintenance work.

A further update on the status of the tie will be made later on Tuesday, if necessary, on www.cafc.co.uk and the club’s social media channels.

Tickets for the Oxford game remain on general sale, priced just £10 adults and £5 concessions and U21s.

Only the lower tiers of the West Stand and North Stand will be open for home supporters, while away fans will be sat in The Jimmy Seed Stand as usual

  • Rain is forecast, match called off at halftime with Oxford leading 4-1. One man trundles out with his roller, followed by five men with a fork. Most of the 2,500 crowd have been in the Bar for 30 minutes. Toys R Us make an offer for the Ground.
