Can I put in a claim to be refunded please ?

Rochdale A 2 seasons ago I paid 3 times for train travel for 2 people. £200 approx.

    Thanks :-)

Shit happens. The game above plus off the top of my head.

Burnley 94/95: called off one hour before kick off due to a waterlogged pitch. Good lock in at a Blackburn pub after though and a decent breakfast in the local hostal next morning on the Darwin road.

Oldham 96/97: Fogged off just before kick off, club directors given local knowledge at Manchester Victoria, but deciding to do the opposite. Dam you ordinary people!

Newcastle 05/06. Return flight to the north east. Game called off due to surrounding roads. Snowball fight before the game and a game of total wipeout at 11pm being pissed and without suitable footwear.

Chesterfield February 2012. Game called off at 9.30 whilst on train to said area. Pissed off young assistant kit man, swearing for Britain on the seat opposite. Get off at Leicester, end up in a student bar near the Walkers stadium with Sky tv, with a bunch of tax Dodgers in their 3d glasses supping on their half of bitter and a bag of Bombay mix. Watch Leicester v Cardiff in a boring 1 all draw and then head back to the student bar to discuss about Nick Clegg.
Making the best of the bad situations. I think I ended up in that same student bar when there were problem's with the trains going up to the massives away, we jumped off at Leicester and found a bar near the stadium with Sky and watched the results come in, although it didn't compete with those who would have been in ground, we had a good old time made better that the barman was a gobby Wednesday supporter.

  • Sorry but no... the link between Bournemouth and Burton goes back to when Bournemouth won the League Two title @ Burton who were extremely hospitable to both players and fans (ensuring the fans got the chance to celebrate... Carlisle take note)

Where as the Barnsley incident is no different to when we travelled to Rochdale (twice) and Chesterfield and had the games cancelled... We didnt demand compensation from either of those two teams did we?

Nobody from Burton demanded compensation as far as I know. It was a spontaneous gesture from Cherries fans organised completely separately from the club.
  • I believe Barnsley has a supporters' trust.

If we are going to do something then trust to trust might be the best vehicle.
  • Trust to Trust. Who's going to be Max?
  • No way, I'm all for helping out other fans, I do think that considering it was our clubs fault they had a wasted journey they should be compensated some how, but it's certainly not our responsibility as fans to compensate them. Someone stuffed up by not getting the inspection done earlier and being as bad as they say a lot of people at the club would have/ should have known that there was a chance the game would be postponed, they instead of making that common knowledge, done the opposite and sent out positive signals, inconveniencing thousands if fans, home and away and costing thousands of pounds, they should pay not us. Find out who was responsible and fine them, use the money towards compensating everyone.
  • We should definitely help but i have spent a pointless £75 today for travelling etc so why should i pay more??

The club should lay on coaches for Barnsley for whenever the game is played .
  • I agree with Andy's sentiment, I'm sure most of us do so don't knock him for suggesting it. I wouldn't contribute anything because I can't afford to offer even a few quid and I have spent a fair bit on travel etc today as I live a fair distance away from SE7. I hope the club pays for Tykes coaches and other travel. A similar gesture to our own fans would be good too.

4300, for me please. No actually, that's for the family, only 1,100 pounds for me.
  • Walsall away Jan 2010 - Game called off at 1pm while at New Street Station. Their idea of thawing out a pitch was oil drum fires on the pitch.

Rochdale away Jan 2011 - Turned around at Stoke. Frozen pitch, no covering.

    Is there a whip round?

Fortunately still at St Pancras when Chesterfield was frozen off in 2012.

Regular away fans know the risks and always assume they are never taken into account by the host club or the referee with pitch inspections. We had a 1-30pm inspection for the home game against Leeds before Christmas!
    2500 Leeds in the vicinity!

Half expected to get to Ipswich on New Years Day for a late postponement in the monsoon. Got away with that one.

Forked out around 15 quid to get to The Valley today....pissed off. As beds said, we should send up coaches for the lot that had tickets from Barnsley

The club that is , they are loaded - not us

  • No way should we fork out for them! The number of times we've all done it and got nothing back for it. Having the game called off will have made it a better away day for the majority of them, just like Chesterfield for us a couple of years back.

If you're doing it for the Barnsley fans, are you going to pay all the Charlton fans travel expenses too?

    Ridiculous idea.
  • I'm embarrassed on behalf of my club, but it's happened to me before and unfortunately it's a part of football.
  • I'd contribute. The replay will be a night game and they probably won't run to more than two coaches. That's how the hardest up travel and it would be a nice gesture if we could chip in. It's hardly the most prosperous town in England.
  • would it not be a good will gesture
  • Knew this question would be posed on the back of the Bournemouth love in.

Absolutely not. If the club cannot do it then there is no reason why our fans should be doing it.
  • This is why I cant understand Barnsley's stance and their behaviour - Have they NEVER called off a match in their lifes at 1:30pm

Yes we've done that today and yes it is embarassing but they're going round acting like this is the first time a match has ever been postponed at this time when it clearly isnt
  • The club should offer a free coach ride to The Valley, from Barnsley, for anyone who buys a ticket for the rearranged fixture. As a gesture of goodwill. Without prejudice. (As we say in Belgian legal circles).
  • Lots of ignorant wotsits on here just seeing it as 'Barnsley fans tough luck'. Well actually CAFC may well have screwed up and now doing the decent thing and clawing back some PR value would be to subsidise their coaches for the re-arranged fixture. Some people and the failure to see past the end of their noses is almost as shameful as this sorry incident.

I'm sorry but it is just tough luck... We're in January so its bad weather so teams and fans have to expect a slight possibility that games would be called off

As many fans have stated above there have clearly been matches over the years that we've gone to where games have been called off last minute (one fixture... Rochdale was abandoned more than once) and as Charlton fans we've been given squat in return!!

Football fans used to throw bananas at black players. It doesn't make it right!

In years gone by we played on pitches that made today's look like the Sahara desert. We don't now.

Likewise because fans have been treated like shit in the past because of poor communications it doesn't mean that should always be the case.

  • The staff at our club make a gross error. I'd contribute to help Barnsley supporters who lost out. Bournemouth did, why should we not?
  • I feel for them, but as they say about poor referring, it all evens itself out in the end. It's happened to us before, Barnsley would have done it to others before.

Why the need for the snidey tone about what Bournemouth fans did Tom? As it happens the circumstancesnces are different as there is that pre-existing feeling of goodwill towards Burton because they treated AFCB really well on their promotion a couple of years ago, which we don't have. Plus I doubt there's more than a handful of Burton down here so they knew they'd all travelled a long way. It was just a nice gesture between two sets of fans, sorry if that offends you in some way.
  • I'd like to claim for Newcastle, Walsall, Burnley and Chesterfield and that is just games I can think of off the top of my head. Where do I send the forms?

In all seriousness, in answer to the original question....not a fking chance.
  • Can I claim for the weeks of life I'll never get back spent reading some of the threads on this forum?

You've totally misinterpreted what I said.

The Bournemouth gesture was very nice and I knew about the good feeling they already had towards Burton. I just knew that from that point onwards we would get our supporters suggesting we should do the same to the away fans if it happens in our fixtures. My opinion is that shouldn't ever have to be the case, especially when the club was at fault.

    Sorry if that offends you.
  • What Bournmouth fans did was a nice gesture but it doesn't mean it should start to be the norm. I highly doubt they are going to do it again next time they call a game off. I also don't think its appropriate for us to jump on the back of someone else's good deed.

Its also not the fans fault it got called off or our responsibility to cover their travel costs. As has been said before its happened to us before and will happen again. Its just one of them things.

Were any of the previous games when Charlton were called off as ridiculous as today's?

Were they the only professional match called off for a full fixture list in England when there was no freak weather that close to kick off?

Were they called off while the sun had been out all morning and afternoon?

Were they called off with no prior warning given that they 'could' be in danger of postponement .?

Were they called off due to the club making a wrong call on how a known crappy surface was looking ?

The uniqueness of this game being called off is different to the others , it is 100% our fault that we didn't warn punters there was a small limited chance that this may happen, especially when, with the dome on, we were supposedly in control of the situation unless there was a big downpour late on

Too hard to manage a fair gesture to all who got rumped by the lack of communication and foresight by our club and we will have lost a lot of money today ourselves but paying for those who travel by coach for the rearranged match from Barnsley would be a nice gesture
  • First I would like à good will gesture!!
Drove from tonbridge to Southampton to pick up my son then to the valley total 5 hours driving then back again probally as much as any barnsley fan??
Won't have to do it again as son has told me not to bother anymore and binned his season ticket!
Another lost fan but don't suppose the club cares ?

Thats a bit drastic from your son, fair weather (literally) supporter? Or if he's a genuine fan he's probably just kicked himself in the bollocks as with any luck this pitch problem is only temporary and when it's eventually sorted I can see us starting to kick ass, the manager and players have a new boss to prove something to and we have new boys on the rosta too!
