  • I'd be surprised if it wasn't widespread, but equally surprised if it was anything major. Surely the trick is not to be noticed!

Clearly not spending their ill gotten gains on property then.
No - but has a £50K car. Probably easier to buy that for cash than a house.

Back to Smodge: the 10k fine, how many weeks' wages was this?

thought the maximum fine is two weeks wages.
i think that is the highest a club can fine a player, i'd imagine the fa set the fines regardless of who you play for/how much you earn
    Not too sure about this:
Paul Ince got a £4k fine (2 weeks wages) to go with his 5 game ground ban. Think the money situation is across the board (I'm probably wrong) with 2 weeks being the norm, but think they can ban people for varying amounts (Suarez, Ince, etc...).
Clubs set their own fines but they have to be approved by the PFA.
You could argue that an offence is not covered by the pre-agreed fines (I imagine no-one had a biting fine) and that a new level must be given, but it is not arbitrary. The player has PFA representation and the amount would be agreed after meetings.

That must be why Sam tries to get booked in every match he plays in!

all they have to do is copy the Grobbelaar tactic.

after being filmed discussing match fixing he said that he was only collecting evidence to take to the police. (yeah right) but he is clear of any charges.

but don't copy him to much cos he they tried to sue the sun who did the secret filming. which was a disaster after the compensation would only be a quid and he would have to pay for the sun's legal costs. half a million. which bankrupted him.

  • As if footballers need any more money to do a job most men would dream of.

Disgusted, as like others I liked both Sam and Akpo.

The Swindon 9 men game feels like a game where it is hard to believe something dodgy had not been agreed. All I know is the game doesn't feel tainted as the 2 clowns who got sent off that day still couldn't make us get beat and the amazing high when Llera got that lob spot on
  • Make me even more angry every time I watch that video.

To think he would put points at risk for our club by getting himself sent off for a few extra bucks pisses me right off.

The minute he got down that tunnel I bet he had a massive smile on his face.

To be honest £70,000 is not really a "few extra bucks" - bit more than that.
Yea. Still pisses me right off though

I have difficulty believing that Sodje was paid £70,000 for one indiscretion. More likely he was lying and exaggerating his 'price for treachery' in order to inflate the price he was charging the undercover reporter, or, he was paid the 70 grand over a period of time for a series of fixes. This is only a guess mind you

I also thought that, certainly used to be the case. Just did a bit of googling - Joey Barton was fined 6 weeks' wages by QPR for getting sent off at Man City on the last day of the season a couple of years back, so not the case anymore.
In fairness he did throw head buts and punches and was dragged off the pitch. The FA banned him for 12 games. I suspect that the PFA would have recommended that he accept the fine, rather than back him in a dispute with the club.

Burton's second yellow was a bizarre unnecessary handball if I remember correctly...

I vaguely recall he was in the six yard box and could have taken the ball on his chest but used both hands, it was stupid in itself and even stupider because Sodje had juts gone off and he had just been booked.

  • They have now arrested a blow from the music world, a DJ of all things.
  • DJ Campbell missed a penalty against us last season!
  • Can only presume that Kettle, Shatwell and Stroud are somehow part of this.
  • 3 reds for us all in first half. Sincerely hope none of these are related to his extra curriculars. 2 of them in league one when we were 2 points from autos. We drew both them and might of won if we didn't have 10.. will be even more fuming if he cost our club promotion to the champ..
  • I think that anyone who doesn't think the red card against Swindon wasn't deliberate probably lives in a bubble

As said before find it very sad
  • Like many on here I am devastated by this news, particularly as they have represented our club. Even if there was none of this stuff going on when he was with us, every card he received will rightly be questioned.

In particular, the time Sam was with us was a poor time on the pitch but I remember always feeling that with him in the team we had a chance. I remember his time at Charlton coincided with me starting to take my son to games. I always used Sam Sodje as an example of where commitment, determination and hard work can get you. Unfortunately those adjectives are now cheat, scum and traitor.
  • Loved sodje. Sam not akpoo.

Massive fcking chunt now. Hope they throw the book at him.

He'll take £50k to plead guilty.
  • Derby go 1 up on Saturday and the away end starts singing "Your going down with the Sodje", can picture it now!
  • I fear that we might all think a lot less of football and footballers by this time next year!

I'm not sure it's physically possible for me to think any less of footballers than I already do...

  • Aren't the Sodje brothers quite religious? I think I remember an interview with one of them whilst with us and there were a couple of references to their faith.
  • Religion, thats where it starts!
  • I wonder if low-paid referees might have their own fingers in the betting pie?

For what good it will do them , they better start praying now.

That is the most chilling possibility of all.

The 'exotic' betting markets make it so easy for corruption to flourish, its very hard for a referee to fix the result of the game without attracting attention but giving penalties and red/yellow cards is far, far easier.
  • is the standard of refereeing and lino in the last couple of years linked to...... I wonder
  • theres a prem league ref whom I have wondered about for ages, sometimes he leaves you questioning his decisions so blatently that you can only come to the worst conclusion possible
  • This is really sad, I liked both Sodje's alot. I'll never forget this, I enjoyed this goal so much:

  • I'm trying not to look at this with charlton glasses on , but some of the decisions we have had at the Valley in recent seasons leads me to believe , i wouldn't be surprised if the refs were at it as well.

You've said this before nla, and I know who you're talking about - I'd be careful before being specific about individuals - the press and others are going to be crawling all over this and other messageboards of teams Sodje has played for. The last thing CL needs is a libel lawyer sniffing around.
