I have this awful feeling that this is going to grow and grow. God knows how many more players will be implicated by the end. If someone like DJ Campbell, earning the sort of money he was on, has (and I know they are, all, only alleged to have at this stage) then there could be players in every Championship Club within reach of the gangs that are running this sort of thing.
I fear that we might all think a lot less of football and footballers by this time next year!
I always though Deon Burtons red against Swindon looked dodgy but thought at worst he wanted a few extra days off. The fact that Goodson's implicated, who would have been his captain in the Jamaican team makes me wonder and of course that's the problem, you go back and think did he mean to do that.
I think we can now start thinking the unthinkable ,especially as Sodje had already gone in that game. What odds would there have been on 2 Charlton players being sent off in the first half ?
At least Miguel Llera can't be accused of throwing that game with his excellent last minute equaliser.

It's frightening to think about it. I'm sure that had we won that game we would have been promoted, automatically, that season!
It's a thought that will be in the back of the mind that when you hear of a crazy tackle sending off that we anticipate to see out of interest to be on motd or fls, it might not even be genuine behaviour of a mistake and could serve another purpose.
Are we really watching an honest game of football? Whether or not those kind of things will happen in English football again, we might now subconsciously view the game differently.
Could be wrong but our lot down at Charlton I see as an honest bunch of pros that would never do a thing like that. That's just my impression of them, and Powell would be wise to it anyway. Out ya go.

Yep. I think its now odds on that Sodje was up to this while he was here. I just hope he didn't rope any of our other players into it. Hes going to have to spill his guts now if he wants a short sentence so I'm expecting a warts & all account of what he was up to.

Just checked and no we wouldn't.
Also, I have to confess that, even to this day, that game is one of my all time favorites, and I think I cheered louder for that lats equaliser than I remember any other goal.
Sodjie is clearly not a passionate footballer and has proven himself to be a dickhead. He said in an interview that he wants kids to look up to him and understands his responsibility in that role, he was playing for Charlton at the time. Temptation was there and he took it. Some might some might not, but 70k offered to you it would at least give you something to think about.
Though it's sad, we all partially understand why he did it, but it separates the men from the boys in my opinion.

But we would have done had we won at Yeovil away also, you could argue Sam's two sending offs potentially cost us four points.
Maybe it's time to think about what part bookies play in all this mess> It would seem you can now place a bet on every conceivable outcome, has this made the problem worse than it might otherwise be?

I think you're missing the point Dave. The decision to get involved in this sort of thing is not swayed by a one off payment of £70k. It is based on the total income that can be generated. Once a player decides to do this sort of thing he can probably expect (I'm guessing, obviously) to have one of these paydays every month. £70k ten times a year would net the same income as a £25,000 a week wage.
Even ignoring the wages that they earn from their football club, £25k a week is a lot more than the average third division player gets.
It's probably more than the average Premier League player gets, truth be told.
So, basically, a player doesn't need to be 'poor' to consider doing this. Two years of this sort of thing would, probably, provide more cash than most Championship players earn in their whole career.
It does indeed separate the men from the boys, as does the ability to provide for your family; players families need looking after long after they retire from football.
Danny Mills was on 5Live yesterday afternoon discussing this story. Said he'd never been approached to get a booking or a sending off deliberately, but also said he knew a few players who got themselves deliberately booked or sent off to effect the timing of suspensions. Failed to mention anything about getting deliberately red-carded to get himself a few days off at Christmas.
Exactly what I was thinking. He sat on BT Sport casting judgement and yet he has previous of deliberately getting himself sent off!

I didn't say that playing an honest game of football is more important then providing for your family.
I don't know the guys background or even if he has a family but he's found himself in trouble for a reason.

I really don't want to believe this of Deon Burton, but nothing should shock us after this.
In Deon's defense, wasn't it two yellows in this game? And as I recall, one was for just bouncing the ball in frustration when the ref gave against him. I was furious with the ref over that. What was his second yellow for.
I don't remember Deon doing anything else dodgy, unless you count missing open goals. In a crap team, I thought he was a player of integrity. I don't want to pretend I thought Sodge was up to anything, but I definitely thought he was reckless, and couldn't be relied upon as a result.

Sorry Dave, I wasn't suggesting that you said playing a game of football was more important than providing for your family.
I was merely pointing out to those that relate £70k to a decision to 'turn bad' that it's, potentially, a lot more than £70k. That fact, along with the need to raise money after you retire, is why I believe that players do this. I also believe that is why it will turn out to include a lot more than six footballers by the time it's all finished.
I'm sorry if I misquoted you Dave, that wasn't my intention.
I don't believe I would do something like this and I am horrified that others do, but I can't, financially, think of a good reason as to why they wouldn't!

I can't remember the offense, but I do remember thinking at the time that he must have known that doing it would have earned him a second yellow card. I also remember knowing the second he did it that he was going off and that at his age he should have known better.
Edit: Just looked it up, the second was for deliberate hand ball. Sodje went on 18 minutes and Burton went on 41 minutes.
The more I think about it the worse the conclusion I come to!
I wonder what the outcome would be if the player who is on the fiddle gets injured in the warm up or during the game before the "sending off". Some mighty pissed off Nigerians & Asians.
Back to Smodge: the 10k fine, how many weeks' wages was this?
Well i cant believe Portsmouth were paying Sodje more than 2k a week especially considering their financial plight , so a 10k fine seems astronomical for a sending off. That cant be right , can it ?
Back to Smodge: the 10k fine, how many weeks' wages was this?
thought the maximum fine is two weeks wages.
I also thought that, certainly used to be the case. Just did a bit of googling - Joey Barton was fined 6 weeks' wages by QPR for getting sent off at Man City on the last day of the season a couple of years back, so not the case anymore.

i think that is the highest a club can fine a player, i'd imagine the fa set the fines regardless of who you play for/how much you earn
Not too sure about this: Paul Ince got a £4k fine (2 weeks wages) to go with his 5 game ground ban. Think the money situation is across the board (I'm probably wrong) with 2 weeks being the norm, but think they can ban people for varying amounts (Suarez, Ince, etc...).
