  • do me a favour, who gives a flying fcuk about broadband speed, can't have them if they provide slow broadband speed, absolute cads.

Do you really think a company that have said "People don't want fast internet" and are the reason American internet speeds lag far behind even our speeds? And they're meant to be a cable company first and foremost, they can't even do that right.

Of course they have interests such as Universal Studios to look after. So americans will probably stream movies from netflix rather than shelling out $15 to the cinema, most of which goes to the studio.

Honestly if you think the current lot are bad, look forward to your season ticket skyrocketing in price and even further squad "trimming" in the summer with comcast.

You're not German , are you, kentaddick ?

Nein! - Er! I mean.. n.. no! Of course not
  • I am not loosing any sleep here are the reasons why

Big construction companys love f-cking local authorities about they change their minds & plans at ramdom , they would from the start realise how many luxury & expensive properties they could build on the land reserved for a sports stadium .

Who would want to pay 3 to 400,000 pounds for a property next to a football ground ?

There could be opposition from the ratepayers of Greenwich

It could take years think how long Liverpool & Everton have been trying to move ( With I believe the full backing of Liverpool council )

If we did get a rich savour & we do all the things that people seem possible & we manage to gain an extra 25,000 plastic prawn sandwich munching fans at our new Greenwich stadium they would if things went belly up desert us in droves for the olympic stadium just across the thames !

What, to watch Championship football? :-)

Football is not about luxury apartments, fancy restaurants and day trippers. It shouldn't be anyway...

Perhaps this is how Corporates envisage the future being shaped.
Being just a well struck 'driver' distance from Canary Wharf and the heart of the 'new city' you must be able to imagine how a new facility around the old Tate & Lyle site could be used for business/entertainment etc 7 days a week in the world of packaged 'franchise' sport? It's no longer football as we, our dad's and granddads knew it - it's all about big bucks business and location, location, location. As that great paragon of virtue, 42nd President William Jefferson Blythe Clinton III commented "it's the economy, stupid!".

yes, but the first bidders could walk away if delayed too long!

I'm not stating an opinion one way or the other on the Charlton situation.

However due diligence can be a two way thing. The potential purchaser wants to assure himself that he would actually receive in reality what purports to be on offer but equally the vendor needs to know that the proposed purchaser is good for the potential offer.

Don't the Bank and the previous directors also have a right of veto?
Not sure they do Kap - my understanding (or possibly misunderstanding) is that the previous owners have no rights other than their right to a return of capital upon certain events including the club being promoted to the Prem or on sale.

More to the point I can imagine that Dicky and Co are only really interested in their payment and from who is a secondary concern a long way removed from their primary concern. As I say, it's business and big business with big numbers too.
  • Football will go on forever, league winning teams won't. Did you know that Preston NE won the first ever football league without losing a game?
    It's a merry go round.
  • I for one cannot wait for the takeover.

No, not like most for the glitz and glamour of a new ground and premiership football, but for the ability to buy really expensive Charlton type non-creative workmanlike players.
  • Sheff Utd will come good!
  • Have we not been taken over yet tonight?

    I blame hamer.
  • Did Comcast take a steak in the new MLS Franchise? The Philadelphia Union? That would be a good indication of their commitment to the game?

From what I can tell, no. The club was formed in 2008, but Philadelphia was 3rd choice for location, two locations in NJ were first considered (Trenton, which was vetoed by the NY Red Bulls on the league's 75 mile no competition rule, and Rowan where it was tied in with a new $100 million stadium development with the university American football team that fell through). So there's possibly 2 reasons Comcast aren't involved, 1)not originally in Phily, and 2)possibly before any football strategy was formed.

Actually, it looks like Comcast either own or managed the Philadelphia union's stadium, via a subsidiary called global spectrum. This may mean nothing as they seem to own or manage all the Phillies baseball ground and own the ice hockey team too
  • Calm down, calm down!
  • Does this mean we have to move to Philadelphia? Valley express will have to up their game.
  • or, if we become part of the MLS franchise, Ooh Aah will go into meltdown over our away numbers. Could be worse though, could have been the ASL.
  • oh my oh my - You girls!

Global Spectrum a subsidiary of Comcast, manages the NEC Arena amongst others in Birmingham. The NEC is in effect owned by by Birmingham City Council. Surely wild speculation to envisage a similar set up with the RBG and a GS managed stadium for sporting and outdoor concerts etc

  • The summer price was £43m, but TJ's hand has now been forced...

That said, the numbers still do not appear to add up without Premier League football, as the purchasers would start out down the £18m purchase price and the debt to the bank, plus the ongoing losses this season and in the future.

    This!
The numbers do not add up unless CAFC can regain Premier League status even if only for 1 season. The gains from promotion far outweigh any business case on moving from the Valley so to me this is a distraction.
No idea how the current deal price (if correct) is calculated but one thing is certain: The irony is that the last few months have destroyed value!

Well, as I have said, I'm open too. I'm just a bit more sceptical than many here about the actual benefits. Of course its a long way down the line too, but I will try and take a leaf out of Henry's book. He has made an excellent checklist against which to evaluate the business plan of any new owners. Something similar can be done with the stay/move issue.

So here's my list of test questions, all suggestions for improvement welcome:

    Staying

What extra seating, executive boxes and entertainment can be built into the Valley?
What is the development cost of such work?
What is the expected extra revenue? - in this League/In the FAPL?
What is the annual running cost?

    Moving

What seating, executive boxes and entertainment is planned?
What is the forecast revenue - in this League/In the FAPL
What is the expected rental and maintenance cost?
What new benefits - such as a Safe Standing area- are offered
What car parking will be available, at what expected cost?

Anyone got anything to add to the questions?

So much I want to say on this but I can't yet reach sufficient coherence. What I can and will say now though is that the most important thing in any decision is that all stakeholders in Charlton Athletic - the board, the investors, the staff, the supporters - are properly consulted and bought into it.

Such questions can help with that process, but for me there would need to be a definite, definitive alternative and compelling reason to move before the debate should be even entertained.

The Peninsula might offer us a unique opportunity to be part of something that if missed we might regret for generations to come. The fight for the Valley back in the 80s was in big part symbolic of the marriage of the identity of the club with its ground (and supporters, of course). That heart and identity wouldn't necessarily be lost at a new ground. If everyone shared the vision for what the Peninsula could bring and bought into it it might actually grow both - but I think it would need to be something uniquely offered by the Peninsula that couldn't be matched at The Valley.

To be clear I don't want to leave the Valley. I can however see that our walk up support could be dramatically increased at the Peninsula - those taking in an O2 concert might opt for some footy and a meal beforehand, for example - and it's a location that will undoubtedly be 'sexier' than Floyd Road and linked directly by tube and the cable car, and therefore very likely to be more attractive commercially. Would it help us back to the Prem? I think that's very doubtful.

What absolutely mustn't happen is that we are moved for the benefit of a handful of owners who won't be here tomorrow. The club has a place in its community and an identity in all of us, and unless we're bought in it mustn't happen. The Valley is our home - a new Valley could be too, but we'd need to see it and like it first.

I recently moved out of London for the first time in my 45 years. In fact, out of South East London for the first time. I never saw myself leaving, I stayed in my last home for 16 years - but then I found reason to go and, whilst I do miss some things about life in South East London (mostly kebab shops open to 2am), I'm really very happy with a change I could never previously have imagined.

For this reason I remain open to a move, provided that should the opportunity ever present itself the identity of Charlton Athletic -its history, its supporters - is not lost in individuals looking for a quick buck. The Message to Our Supporters next time should be this: "We want you to be happy that our club's identity will grow at a new place, we want you to come with us or we're lost, here's why we think this is right for Charlton Athletic - please join with our vision and make it happen for supporters now and for future generations. Because if we don't, well - who will he support?"
Great post mate - can't improve on it.
