  • @mid_life_crisis the Harp on Chandos Place is a few mins away...

    Looks good, cheers CC.

Be interested to hear what you think of The Harp, as it changed hands a while ago - just hope it's as good as I remember it.
  • The Harp is still a cracker. Not much had changed last time I was in. It's one of those pubs I struggle to walk past. Always have to pop in for one, even if I'm running late. Rude not to.

Doing Dry January so all this Beer talk is not helpful.

Careful, @Riviera has zero tolerance of that sort of talk

A shout to my son, who's just finished his 26 pub Monopoly themed pub crawl.

  • I don't feel very well.
  • Symbolic Oude Gueuze, you just can't beat it!
  • Dont care if Dry January finishes on Monday I am having a beer or five tonight!

Of all the months of the year not to drink January is the worst possible choice!
  • Retox don't detox.
  • A thumbs-up from me regarding Lidl's own-brand 'Hatherwood' bottled beers.
The Green Gecko IPA and the Purple Panther Porter are rather good.

Not heard of those but will look into them. Lidl are the most exciting thing to hit the high street in years. I love them and they are really annoying the big boys.

    Pikie.
  • 145? That's a quiet weekend for some of us
  • Hatherwood beers are brewed by Wychwood, so part of the Marstons family.
  • Three weeks and nobody has mentioned beer. I've seen more comments about trains and obscure stations.

So, I have to share, tonight I'm drinking Allagash St Kliippenstein. Strong ale aged in bourbon barrels Beyond good, and very chocolate.

Had to share that, because I know too many Bud drinkers.

Yes there's a lot of good Belgian beers, also just over the border in the Nord pas de Calais region.

Very true some really good beer can be found in Northern France.

There is a lot of crap spoken about beer, especially from the trendy Craft Ale brigade.

True and also from certain CAMRA members (I am one myself).
  • Just recovered from an enthusiastic session last night! Various IPA's and American IPA's. Beer is much more reliable than football!

  • Drinking 'Proper Job' tonight.

    Cornish ale at it's best.

  • This may go down like a lead balloon, but this Belgian monk's beer is available in some UK outlets, particularly Waitrose. It is marketed by SAB but the monks are still in charge of production. It is a 7% number, so definitely for sipping slowly while contemplating how to get rid of a less welcome Belgian import.

Yeah, I'll get onto that once I've finished by bottle of buckfast at 10:53 am!

Got a bottle of this today from Tesco (Sidcup)......not sure whether to try it now or let it age a few months as per the gauge on the label!

I didn't know it is able to mature in the bottle. So I asked the marketing manager, here is her reply :-)

:-) yes, it’s true, the beer is refermented (special strain of yeast and a little bit of sugar are added directly into the bottle, into the fresh beer, so liquid keeps evolving in the bottle, as yeast works ). For the first three months we keep bottles in the brewery, in most favourable temperature conditions. So what you get as at least 3 months aged and taste is already different from the fresh beer. But yeast keeps working (unless you freeze it down, temperature should not go below 16 degrees) and taste’s changing – up to cca 18 months. After that all sugar is eaten and process stops, but beer doesn’t get rotten, you can keep for 2-3 years. The older beer is the less “beerish” taste it has, personally I’d say it’s getting better.

Yeah, it’s strong, but all the abv is from malt, it is natural. Plus it also has natural co2, not added, and vitamins from the yeast, so there is much smaller risk of headache if hangover :-)
  • Franklins, Mama Knows Best, is a nice drop had a few pints of this yesterday....as you would on Mothers Day.
  • I can't stand Beer or Lager... the taste is just not right.

Mead however, that's some tasty booze.

Wine is ok (don't like Red, it gives migraines within an hour of a glass)

Spirits is where I am at home.

I'm not even afraid to announce this...

    My top 5 drinks are:

    1. Vodka Orange
    2. Mojito
    3. Vodka Lime Soda
    4. Desperado's/Amigo's
    5. Vodka Redbull - None of that monster crap.

Big fan of Lidl, their Vodka and White rum range are almost as good as your Smirnoff or Bacardi
  • Spent last Saturday night at Craft Beer Rising - micro/craft beer festival on Brick Lane...had some amazing brews (I like hoppy, keg based APAs/lighter IPAs etc)...too many to name but a long time favourite is what the guys at Bad Seed Brewery are doing...their 'Cascade' is a great beer... (In other news I hope to be able to announce a new micro brewery in our part of south east London in the coming months....). Cheers
