Leaving early

  • There seen to be an awful lot of perfect fans on this thread that never leave early from games.
  • Strange comment.
I'm another perfect fan then. I have never left before the final whistle in 38 years of going. I've missed the kick off a couple of times though due to public transport. Once went to Forest v Arsenal on spur of the moment with a couple of gooners and only got there for last 20. Saw three goals though.
  • Just after half time when we lost to John Beck's Cambridge playing that awful brand of football.

We were losing 2-0 but it was more about the style of football they were playing.

  • Not sure I've left early before the end of a game, but I often have to leave before half time in order to get a pint !
  • We left early for a game that finished 4-3 in the mid-90s I think, I can't remember who it was against, though I think they were blue. I remember Pardew scored, and that we were something like 3-1 up when we left. It was very tricky to work out what had happened in those last few minutes until the radio went on.
  • I have never left early but would ask those that do to have a bit of consideration for the people who want to see the whole match.. It is very annoying when someone leaves early, then stops in front of you to watch a bit more play and blocks your view.

why bother going if your going to leave early. would you go to the cinema and leave 10 mins before the end to beat the traffic

If I went to a cinema with 20,000 people in and had a 2 and a half hour journey (without the traffic) home on a Saturday then yes.

I usually leave when the board goes up and watch injury time on the TVs regardless of how well we are playing.

If it saves me an extra 45 mins and I still have some of my Saturday night left when I get home then why should I be made to feel like I'm 'not a real fan' just because I leave a few minutes early?
  • I had fat bloke give it 'loyal supporters' to me hillsys up and glass half empty at Blackpool for leaving as they scored their fifth.

"Fuck off fatso' was the best I could come up with

Football can often absolutely ruin otherwise good days out
  • The closest I've ever come to leaving early is moving to an empty seat right by the edit in the last minute or two, mainly at night games when my brother was 10 and he had to get home for school the next day!

  • I didn't but today would have been a good one to leave early :-)

Leaving the Valley 4/5 mins early saves you 45 mins ? Do you drive to games ?
  • half time at sell out park 3-0 down to liverpool ended up losing 4-0.Arrived 20 mins late ,so only saw 25 mins .i hated going there even on good days.[did enjoy beating chelsea in a evening game there 3-1 i think mortimer scored a blinding goal].
  • I only ever stay to the end on the last game of the season. Leaving on the 89th minute probably saves me 20 minutes. Last year, as far as I recall, I missed one late goal for us (winner against I can't remember who) and Birmingham's late equaliser against us. I consider that worthwhile. I'll walk out of anything if I'm not having fun or I've got something more important to do.
  • You pay your money, you make your choice. Want to leave early, fair enough. It really is that simple.
  • The numpty at the back of the North West was in full swing today, and a couple with their 4 little kids left well before half time just to get away from him.

    Sure that was Southend
  • I think in a close game it is VERY detrimental to the team if a lot of people leave early. At 0-0 a close game can be turned by a crowd staying and supporting rather than getting home in time to watch x factor
24 Red "it saves you 20 mins "to do what?
  • At the end of the day people have the right to do what they want, provided its legal, and it really is nobody else's business.
  • Cardiff away around five seasons ago at Ninian Park. Left 15 mins from the end when 0-2 down and down to 9 men. Fancied a peaceful walk back to the station. Steward let me and my son out through a side door, as we passed the directors entrance, Peter Varney came out and was leaving early as well. Obviously had seen enough and fancied beating the traffic.

  • These days I very rarely leave early and if I do it is almost always for non-footballing reasons (i.e. there is something I have to get to). Will never understand people who regularly leave early even if we're drawing - you may hear the excuse "We never looked like scoring", but even games seemingly going nowhere can be won or lost in an instant with a piece of individual brilliance.
  • I couldn't blame anyone for leaving after an hour today, we could all still be playing now and neither keeper would need to stand up
  • Half time v Doncaster this season

Partly calculated risk that the game would be abandoned but in all honesty more cos the wife was phoning or texting constantly through the first half as we had water coming into the conservatory, it rained a bit that day

Brownie points for leaving and missed the traffic...
  • Wolves at home in Prem, bumped into a pal I hadn't seen for ages walking up to West Upper, grabbed a pint. And then another couple. Watched us go 3 up on the tv out the back, so left and went round to the Oak and battled on through.

    Great game.
  • Only ever left early once. That Leeds game when they score 6. We left after their 5th went in, heard the cheer for the 6th at the bus stop, and was in the Earl of. Chatham in Woolwich to hear sky sports say "the final whistle has gone at the valley".
  • I've never left a game early.

Twice I've gone to leave and the whistle beat me though. Pre season losing at Orient 1-4 I think it was in Gritt and Curbs' first year, and then in the away game at Southampton in 98/99 when we threw it away.

Thing is, games like the Blackburn 2-2 stick in the mind. "It only takes a second to score a goal" said Cloughie, I think it was, and there are too many examples of late game-changers to leave early.

I still chuckle to myself at the chap a few seats down to me who left after Cardiff's second goal at the Valley last season. Ho ho ho, serves you bloody well right.
  • Which reminds me of a very good friend of mine who left Wembley in 1998 after extra time and before the penalties because he'd made a promise to be home by a certain time to his missus who was looking after their new born.

I was actually quite impressed with his fortitude and commitment to his missus, but not a decision I could ever have made. Would rather have divorced than leave that game, although obviously I was married to my ex and I'd probably rather have divorced than stop watching Jeremy Kyle...
  • When it comes to games like the Leeds debacle, staying the duration makes sense - That's when the loyal supporter thing kicks in. I'd never leave at that stage, I'd be ashamed to admit it. But sometimes I pop out early to get the car to save dad from walking up the hill. But as mentioned above, we shouldn't really have to explain ourselves.

Yes that sounds about right. I think Pardew had a really odd one-on-one where he stumbled the ball over the line.

  • Only time for me was Millwall when the third went in. Couldn't bear any more humiliation. Then we couldn't leave.
  • v huddersfield 1957 with half an hour left.
