  • I appreciate a bit of clarity on his role and a few others at the club.

I did spot the typo though (focused) but won't blame him
  • we aint signed a player for cash since Kav left top top execing

'They are supported by a number of people who have been around the business for a period of time, who have got tremendous experience which we value...'
Mmmm.....but maybe not quite as many as a few months ago?
  • Moan when we hear nothing from the board.

Moan when we do hear from an executive director.

    Can't win, can he really?
  • Load of old drivel, much of it repetitive. Attends 75% of games. LOL.
  • cafctom - quite right. He's just given a full description of his role in one of the largest communication tools the club have. But that is not good enough for people. Some people are just not happy. We were told he was part time and now we are told by the man himself he is actively working everyday. Snipes because he hasn't signed many/any players for a fee, like that is his fault.
  • I am glad he posted as I like getting an insight as to how the club is run. I think my disappointment is in that a person who works in communication produces such a dull report.

What do he and SCP discuss twice a day? Give an example - how did it help? Is it mainly the board members asking gen questions about day to day stuff like players fitness on behalf of board members and he is getting answers for them? Twice a day seems excessive or does it show a healthy interest?

I can see why he is busy, especially on the contracts side, and a little background on the decision making process would have been of interest. A funny story? Who we nearly signed?

    Just lacked any punch.

Anyway, it was nice to know that he is responsible for selecting players to bring in and doing the deals. We all know that SCP is infallible - so if we are not doing well on the pitch the board will know who should be sacked!

P.S. Can Bedsaddict reproduce the programme every week please.

I tell loads of people I'm actually doing some work.

    Do leave off.

    To break that down

"He's just given" Yes and how long has he been in post? Why wait so long to give such a bland message. Some would say he is just responding to criticism in VOTV and elsewhere rather than actively engaging with fans.

"one of largest communication tools the Club have" but not the biggest. Like the financial news from David Joyes in the Millwall programme I doubt very much we will see this on the largest and most read tool ie the OS. But the OS is read by journalists and can be easily reproduced by them and blogs etc PS has anyone commented on the Joyes financial news here or elsewhere?

"Some people are just not happy" Agree with you there. On the other hand some people refuse to see any problems whatsoever.

"He hasn't signed many/any players" True. We haven't BOUGHT a player since he has come. Loans and out of contract players but not signed a single player for a fee from another club. No money? No ability to broker a more complicated deal? Who knows but he's doesn't tell us, that's for sure.

"Told by the man he is actively working every day" So he maybe but that does mean he is working full time as you implied. If he is full time then why not say that. If someone works 2 hours a day then are they full time or part time.

Yes, well done Martin but too little, too late. I look forward to your next missive in 18 months time.
  • well I dont read the programme or go on official site as everything that is gospel about CAFC is on here, so until Prothero comes on here and tells us his role, I wont believe a word.

  • he is the fans choir director and has a new cafc cafc cafc just for you
  • I love a bit of cafc cafc cafc
  • If the same article, word for word, had been penned by Kav there would have been a lot of awed appreciation from the CL chorus line. It is a bit boring, but people want to know what is going on, and they tried to address that. He works in the office, he's not a 20 goal a year centre forward.

    To break that down;

Actively responding to criticism should be praised. It implies listening, reflection and then action. Good qualities. It being a bland message is open to interpretation, I found aspects of interesting and things I did not know. What would you have had him say?

I don't think the point about journalists really holds water. The programme is hardly a secret message that gets destroyed 15 minutes after the final whistle or when you leave SE7. It is there as a permanent source of information, easily accessible to all who wish to see it. Why every article is not on the OS I do not know, perhaps after a 5 day period the articles could be posted on the website, but then would people buy the programme? Do people who part with their money deserve a degree of exclusivity?

Agree, some people are just not happy and some don't see any issue. My point though is that the main criticism has been no communication and questions about what MP does and then the communication is given and it is still not enough.

We did buy Button after MP took over, some have said that we had not paid fully and hence he was sold, but the records show he was bought for an undisclosed fee post MP. He can't sign players that the board won't release the funds for, deals have been closed for players since he took control and new contracts have been offered and signed. Maybe not enough but I wonder with that MP's fault or the financial situation. Also I would not like him to be in the programme saying that he can't conclude the deals we wanted as we don't have any money. Is this the information that should be in the programme? Is that good information for Charlton to release?

I did not imply that he is working full time, I said he was actively working for the club every day. This is what he said. Why d we need to know how many hours his contract states or his weekly total? The point was he was branded as part-time Prothero on the basis that he worked one day a week for the club. The communication from the club points otherwise. it might not be the style we like or expect, director behind the desk, oil in the lamp burning all night long, but in the modern world of communication methods that is no longer necessary. I'm in Bangkok but communicate with colleagues globally all the time.

Too little, too late very possibly but it is there and is now communicated.

Now I am no fan of the current set up, but I am not against them in the same way as many others. I've just spent a while here trying to play devils advocate because in my opinion there seems to be a great deal of criticism of aspects of our club and when that is addressed by the club it is not enough for people. Honestly reading parts of this forum it feels like there is a continuous vendetta against aspects of the club. Praise should be given when and where it is due, regardless of agendas.
  • Maybe he could come to one of the supporters Q & As?

That is the single most important and constructive comment on this thread.

I actually did meet him last night, as well as several long standing and new CL legends. This isn't an earth shattering revelation but until you meet someone face to face you really can't judge them. I only read his article when I got home. I think a lot of the criticisms are valid, but I have a feeling that in person he'd come over better.
  • I sat close to him last night and to be fair to him he was as committed and animated as any fan in the ground.
  • did he sing cafc cafc cafc with the same vigour and heart as NSS I doubt it , for such a small lad his lungs don't half bellow out the anthem

Does NSS go to the games?

Snce when is responding to criticism a bad thing? Would you prefer he said nothing at all?

I would point out that all journalists get given a copy of the programme at the match, I doubt many go to the OS for 'news'. As for being 'easily reproduced by them and blogs' that would be called plagerism and most actual journalists are not big fans of it.
And I see those that want have managed quite easily to reproduce it here.
I would suspect most real journalists would read what's in the programme and then ask for a direct comment. If they don't get that they don't run anything. It is rare for information on offical outlets (be in programmes, OS, press releases etc) to get reproduced in full without further comment and reporting by the journalist.

And next we look at 'actively working' why do you need that to be further defined? Do you actively work all day every day? I suspect no-one who posts on here every day could say they do. Can we al still do our jobs? I'm guessing yes.

But I will agree with you on one thing - too little too late. Those that dislike Prothero, will continue to do so just because he's not Airman and hasn't gone out of his way to stroke fans egos. Personally I don't know or care what he does at work, any more than I want the call centre to justify themselves to me. Those that pay the piper call the tune.

He may as well have not bothered if his intention was to change minds on here. Except that I imagine it wasn't. It was to speak to all the other thousands of fans who just want to hear news from their club and have no preconceived opinions, or previous knowledge of how the club works to compare it with.

For someone who doesn't care what he does you spend a lot of time defending and justifying him and everything else at the Club while at the same time having some sly and not so sly digs at those fans who don't see it the way you do.
