Really frustrating we didn't get anything last night.

Hudders seem to be a bogey side the past few seasons. We've played 4 away games now and not won any, think our home form is going to be vital in keeping us away from trouble

    o

We beat them 1-0 away last season
That isn't what he meant. He was saying that you have played 4 away games this season and not won any.
I know that. I was responding to the point that huddersfield are a bogey side when we took 4 points off them last season and beat them at home the year before ending there unbeaten league record.

I was tempted to start singing

    Paint dry,
It's just like watching paint dry.

But I didn't think it would catch on.

A few around me were moaning and groaning about Sordell, saying Marvin Sordell, more like Marvin sod all.

He needs to sharpen up his act pretty quickly, because at the Valey people won't be so forgiving.
  • My ears are still ringing from the rants of the super gran at the back of the stand last night, she should of done the half time team talk
  • Sordell, this weeks scape-goat. LOL
  • Bit Damo, what did you expect from this season before it started?

We knew from the start this was going to be a difficult season. We've just got to hope we've got enough and a bit of.luck on our side to see us right.

Not surprised at all, was just stating a fact. I think it is well known that I have never been optimistic, so I probably hide away from some of the pre season predictions. But I expected a tough season, and would snap someone's arm off for 21st right now.

    You and me both.

21st will be a good season. Anything better than that will be excellent.

He was awful. Not a care in the world! I think Stewart did more in his first 3 minutes when he came on.

    Sordell, this weeks scape-goat. LOL

Its posts like this that are just as bad as the blame powell for everything mob.

If someone has had a shit game, then fans are likely to come on here and mention it. It does not make them a 'scapegoat'.

Unless that 'LOL' at the end of your post meant you was being sarcastic.

Charlton: Hamer; Wilson, Morrison, Dervite, Wood (Stewart 68), Wiggins; Stephens, Pritchard, Jackson (Pigott 86); Church, Kermorgant, Sordell (Harriott 68).

So we lost, even with 12 men on the pitch...

Seeing that we have no height up front in the team without Yann, Pigott is too young to play 90 minutes, and our tactic of lumping it up won't work then, should we
    a) get someone else in as a reserve target man (e.g. Hulse who is still a free agent I believe)
    b) get Smith back - is there a recall option?
    c) stick a CB up front. I can remember us playing Phil Chapple up front :-)

Statistically the worst start to a season since relegation from the Prem in 06/07 and worse than any start to a season during the Pardewkinson nightmare.

Should we be worried - I honestly don't know how to feel?

Is that right? I haven't checked but according to this post from their regular stato on the CAFC Mailing List (cafc@lists.addicks.org) it's the worse start (in the Championsip/2nd Division) since.....last year?

  • We started exactly the same last season. 5 points from 6 games, where people got this idea that this is the worst start in years I have no idea, but we did pretty well at the end did we not. This is going to be a season of highs and lows, like last year when we were 21st in November, 9th by may. Do not get too high when we win, and not too low when we lose.
  • I try, twiggy, I really do, but I feel high as a very high kite when we win and really, really, really p*ssed off when we lose. I mean, REALLY p*ssed off. And that's usually when my missus says, 'It's only a game.' And that's when usually I kick the washing machine...
  • Well i like Stewart already. What a strike.
  • Two corkers there. That's a cracker of a goal from Stewart.
  • People really shouldn't get so down! Its a really unpredictable division. We beat Leicester (now top), draw at Watford - but lose at home to 'boro! Millwall (were bottom) beat Blackpool (were top)....who knows whats gonna happen next! I know we all want to see us score goals and win...but its so tough to call at the moment - give it until half way through the season for a better assessment.
  • 'Just frustrating that we are 2/3 decent champ players away from being a pretty good side.'

Or is it 2/3 players away from picking a pretty good side ? Choosing Sordell ahead of Pigott can only be trying to justify bringing Sordell in. My concentration on Saturday will be more on the team that is picked, and the spirit with which they play, rather than just the result.

  • Hope we go back to 4-4-2 saturday with Harriot and Stewart out wide, Yann & Church upfront and Pritch + 1 other in the middle. Really go at them.

Just wondered whether Stewart did enough in a short space of time to warrant starting on saturday apart from the goal, look forward to seeing it when I get home.

  • V millwall would go with:

    Hamer

    Solly
    Morro
    Dervite
    Wiggins

    Stewart
    Pritchard
    Stephens
    Jackson
    Harriott

    Kermo

  • Most pertinent points have been raised on here so far. To summarise so far as I am concerned:

    1) We were a little unfortunate not to get a point .. Hudds were not a lot better than us. They scored 2 very good goals, 1 of which was exceptional.
    2) Kermorgant was sorely missed .. Church and Sordell together are too lightweight
    3) Kermorgant injured .. I would have started with Pigott
    4) Sordell is totally lacking n confidence. A few Addicks fans were getting on his back. The talent is there, alas I fear it will not be released with us
    5) 3 5 2 is Ok when seeking a point or to defend. When behind a more dynamic formation is needed. The introduction of Stewart and Harriott gave us that dynamism. One criticism of Powells' use of subs in this game .. Pigott should have come on 10-15 minutes earlier. He added height and weight not to mention no little skill, as said above, he really should have started perhaps.
    6) Stewart is a real find, quick, tricky, confident and of course scored a terrific goal
    7) We finished strongly .. now there needs some kind of magic tinkering to get the balance between a solid 3 5 2 and a more attack minded 4 4 2 .. I am still convinced that all in all, 4 4 2 suits us better.
    8) Vaughan the Hudds striker is in terrific form. Their first goal ostensibly looked due to our defensive frailty .. In fact Vaughan found space cleverly and was found with the perfect cross for his header. Their second was one of those once a season long range perfect pots.
    9) Huddersfield is a nice friendly place to go and see a game. The only pity was the result
    10) IF WE CONTINUE TO CARRY ON PLAYING AS WELL AS WE FINISHED THIS GAME, WE HAVE FEW WORRIES

if you're happy .. me happy too ((:->) .. that looks to be a good solid side .. perhaps the 'compromise' I was looking for between 3 5 2 and 4 4 2 .. lots of pace which we need as we are better as a 'breaking' rather than passing through the midfield side a t m
  • There's nothing wrong with 3-5-2, we looked dangerous against Leicester going forward playing this way, and against Watford created chances. Watford play 3-5-2 and look very dangerous going forward.
The only problem with 3-5-2 is that it neither Harriott nor Stewart can fit into that system, unless you make it more of a 3-5-1-1, with one of them floating behind a loan striker, and again that would only work with a proper target man up front, i.e. Yann.
  • 352 does not play to our strength. Even though we appear incapable of keeping a clean sheet at the Valley in the league (last one in Nov 13 v Posh), the defence is our strength. 352 wastes two of our five best players ie Solly and Wiggins (other three imo Kerm, JJ and Pritch).

It also accommodates Stephens when stats previously put on CL show we win more when Mr Lux is not playing. Also I do not rate Hamer, being beaten by far too many long shots these days.

I suppose it is all about opinions but sometimes you have to go back to the evidence as to why we were so successful at the end of last season. This was because we had a strong player to support JJ in centre midfield. I believe that player is either now Pritch or Cousins.

    442 is the way forward.

My ideal team if all fit:-

    Alnwick

    Solly
    Morrison
    Cort
    Wiggins

    Pritch
    JJ
    Cousins
    Harriot

    Yann
    Pigott/Church
  • Posting very belatedly again following the early morning arrival home.

Most have already stated the obvious - we were extremely poor for the first 45mins and were unlucky to concede before SCP could have a "quiet" word in their shell likes. Not that Town were much better except for Vaughan.

Slightly improved after the break but we only came to life when Callum & Cameron entered the fray. What a difference they made ! A little bit of hope surfaced but it was not to be. Very disappointing evening for all concerned and well done to those of us that made the long trek..

Without Yann we are a ship without a paddle- that's plain for all to see. Presumably, what we have to do is to amend our game plan accordingly as I don't feel we can simply replace him with A N Other...especially when that is MS. No need to elaborate unfortunately.

The energy and enthusiasm that the 2 youngsters injected into our performance when given the opportunity must not be underestimated. And more of the same may well be the difference between a GREAT evening come Saturday and a thoroughly depressing one ( after the washing machine has been well & truly kicked ! ) We DO have other strengths in our squad and SCP needs to be brave enough to use them when injury to a vital player occurs. If we can't start with the team that won/drew the last match, then maybe a complete rethink may be necessary ? But what do I know.

Had a chat with Matt Taylor at the game - such a lovely guy - who said he's currently recovering from a knock. Gave him a lucky humbug which resulted in Cameron's goal (?) but probably means he'll now be visiting his dentist as well as the physio's room !
  • Thanks for posting the highlights.

From the reports the 2nd goal was described as unsavable. Certainly not the case. Its right in the.middle of the goal and not strong enough hand to tip it over. U cannot be being beaten from those kinda efforts. Come on BH, get urself back to last seasons form
  • Need to see the replay from behind the goal but it did look like it was pretty central
  • WDL from the last 3 games, just about what we could expect given the opposition. Some - stung by how stupid they were made to look last season - are once again frothing at the mouth to get rid of Powell, thankfully the majority seem to understand the incredible constraints under which he is working & take a more intelligent & considered approach. I would be happy with a last day escape from the drop given what CP has to work with this season, anything else is a bonus.

One last word. Attwell, the referee, generally had a good game, he let it flow and wasn't too card happy .... EXCEPT !!!!! .. towards the end Simon Church was bursting through the defence, ball at feet, almost for the first time .. one defender gently tugged his shirt and his mate tripped Church .. Attwell booked Church for diving .. Attwell .. didwell .. but made a right f**k up with that decision
