Club looking for matchday volunteers

  • It's an excellent idea, though they haven't indicated what the volunteers will be doing.

I work for a charity and without volunteers we just couldn't function, they do so much that couldn't be afforded with paid employees.
  • or for a real fan an opportunity to go behind the scenes on match day and to build relationships that if the club picks up you have a chance to utilise that experience when other roles become available

    win win situation
  • Some people will take ANY opportunity to knock the club.

Sounds like a decent idea to me, but what do I know!
  • I wouldn't do voluntary work if you paid me.

(PS Great initiative, especially for local supporters.)
  • Any idea what it involves?
  • They are only looking for 6 people. So not going to break the bank even if they were paid. Maybe as a community club they thought it was a good way for genuine fans to be involved and see game foc. Great idea.
  • Maybe it's something to do with setting up the practice goals and netting before the game and then putting them back in storage afterwards?

It's not going to be much in that time is it, but will involve a bit of physical work - so no flaky birds/or limp fellas.

Physically fit bit makes me think i might get a game if I bring my boots, may well apply, and ask for a refund on my S/T if I get it (paying installments though)
  • I do quite a bit of voluntary work for old people who can't afford a handyman. Voluntary work for Messrs Slater, Jimenez etc.? Don't think so!
  • It's obviously a good idea. Why spend cash you haven't got (losing £5M-£7M pa), when you can offer a free seat, of which you have a spare 10,000 in the home end.

NB I've just received a text saying Solly has been offered 100 tickets per home match, in lieu of a pay rise.

    Good for you.

But if you were skint and were strugling to afford a ticket then you can't really lose.

  • Clearly there are not many trade union members among the CL massive.

What the hell is a professional business doing recruiting free labour? If there is work to be done, employ paid stewards and pay them the union-negotiated rate.

    Whre does it end?

Perhaps there are a few decent Sunday morning footballers who could volunteer to play on Saturday afternoons for nothing? Didn't we recruit the likes of Paul Williams and Paul Gorman from amateur football - good signings and perhaps the only mistake we made was paying them a pro salary...

And there are plenty on here who reckon they can do a better job than Powell. Perhaps we could have a volunteer manager, too? I've always admired Scoham's tactical analysis and I reckon he'd do a good job.

Henry Irving would make a fine honorary chief executive and I will volunteer to take on Prothero's job free of charge as it apparently only takes up one day a week.

Perhaps Airman Brown could be persuaded to abandon VOTV and edit the match-day programme instead for free?

This is not jjust a bad idea but a dangerous one that undermines basic employment rights. That clearly doesn't worry Cameron/Osborne acolytes, like Slater and Jiminez. But it worries the hell out of me.
  • Oh please!

It's six people getting free tickets for putting in some graft for an hour or so every two weeks - it's not Orgreave and they're not going to be the next Tolpuddle Matyrs!
  • Incorruptible, do you know that the work is that of a steward? I don't remember reading that the job is stewarding.

A good summary of the common sense of the left. When you was a kid, did you get a union approved contract drawn up for your pocket money ?
  • You could be the ref Incorruptible, though with your socialist striking background you'd probably blow the whistle and tell everyone to leave the pitch :-)

First time you've been right in a long time, comrade.

All of these free labour schemes, internships etc. are utterly wrong and are opposed by the TUC. You want to work for free, go and volunteer in the local Oxfam shop.

  • Agree on internships

  • It's not free. It's 2 hours work for possibly a £25 ticket !

    Really?

In a post not so long ago I said that Totnes was a nice place and that the Steam Packet Inn was a cracking place for me to take the family for lunch. What's wrong about that?
  • Packet Inn you two....
  • Respect to you, Comrade Off-it. I confess the Steam Packet in Totnes sounds a fine and egalitarian sort of place where hopefully they pay their workforce something above the minimum wage, too. Sorry I missed that post!!!
  • It's not free. It's 2 hours work for possibly a £25 ticket !

    A good point, well made.

Interesting. I'm sure Slater and Jiminez couldn't give a fig about what the TUC says. But a week after CAFC (along with all other Premiership and Championship clubs) received a letter from HMRC "warning that its inspectors will begin a series of "targeted checks" after receiving evidence about workplace exploitation", the club launches an appeal for voluntary labour?
  • Good article, but does the NMW have to be paid in cash ?

    A £25 ticket for 2 hours work is £12.50ph.

Some people get free accomodation, as part of their remuneration. Benefits in kind etc.
  • What a lot of fuss over 6 people helping out the football team they support.
  • Good article, but does the NMW have to be paid in cash ?

    Yes it does.

And a lot of fuss about six people? Wait until they come back and say the scheme has proved so successful they're seeking another six volunteers. And then another dozen... And then, by pure coincidence of course, notice how paid match-day staff find their hours and shifts getting cut-back...
