SINCE I WAS YOUNG

  • The amount of people standing helped the atmosphere. And no one died of

The songs a 10. The people that sung it were 10. It just that not many people did. More sang at Bournemouth.
Our vocal support at home really is piss poor most of the time & always has been :-(

    NB I always sing.

Saturday was terrible though it didn't help that the drum had a hole put in it after 10 minutes. If the drum is going loud (which it is most of the time) then the crowd tend to get going much better. Looking for a massive improvement atmosphere wise against Doncaster.
The players have to do their part as well against doncaster if the atmosphere is to improve. After the first 10 mins the atmosphere is dictated by their performance in my opinion.
That's very true but at the same time if we're not singing for them then they might feel demotivated. I've seen worse performances from us with a much better atmosphere.

If you watched Leicester Leeds the other day, it finished 0-0 and the Leeds fans sung non stop the whole game and they were very loud too! Don't see why we can't be like that.
The reason we can't be like leeds is due to the fact they attract a lot of young fans who are willings to join in with chants, whereas we have a generation of fans which are of an older age who just want to turn up, watch the football and go home.
  • Think of Cardiff though, We sang through there first two goals and we won 5-4, Maybe that proves something
  • You could sit here and talk about numbers , young fans, old fans, leeds, etc.... blah blah blah.
At the end of the day it will always sound better from the lower north.

    Last week was the perfect example;
Having sat bang on the half way line in the west for both games, against oxford 30 kids in the lower made the song louder than an almost packed north upper the following saturday.
  • I don't want to come on here and say "get rid of the older fans", cause obviously that's not right and we're all Charlton, etc. But I think a great way of attracting younger fans who will be willing to join in more with songs is to get the atmosphere pumping as much as possible to start. Then if the odd youngster comes along to games and hears how good our atmosphere is then he (or she) will hopefully think oh yeah brilliant I love this atmosphere, I want to buy a season ticket next year and join in!

POSLCAFC I agree completely, both the Cardiff and Bolton games at home last season were prime examples of how if we are loud that it makes a massive difference to the teams performance. The 12th man is out there is us and we are more than capable of making a difference.

Jarman - though I agree with you about the lower North having better acoustics. Unfortunately, a large of majority of fans would be completely against moving to the Lower simply because most have been up top for years. And I can understand why lots wouldn't though I myself personally would be willing to take a drum to the Lower and give it a go to see how much difference it would make atmosphere wise. - Maybe we could give it a go for a one off league game and see what affect it has?

What we need is a big cup draw at home where all the season ticket holders willing to sing their hearts out for 90 minutes all buy tickets for that game in the Lower North and just go for it. I have a feeling we might get a fantastic FA Cup 3rd round (or Capital One cup 3rd round draw if we beat Huddersfield) at home and we can prove ourselves there!
  • I reckon that the singing from the Covered End over the past couple of years is the best I've heard since the mid to late 1980s. No jeers, no voicing of (real) frustrations.... just passionate, honest, on-going support. Charlton fans have engaged in this on numerous occasions in recent times - including last Saturday - and the results have been tangible, immediate and very important. The players are energised and feel valued. Chris Powell has often spoken of the positive effect that the home support has on the players.
Well done, all. Grumble quietly. Sing up, long and loud!
  • Well that was shite. Possibly the worst song ever to be sung at a football ground. Excluding Shithurst.

    There's always one
  • Is it supposed to be sung that fast or have we charltonised it?

  • I think it's been Charltonised a little bit but not as much as usual
  • I like it at the faster tempo. Very catchy!
  • First let me say that I think the 'song' is a bit naff, but everyone sings it and it creates a good atmosphere. Anyway, it seems Motherwell, Alloa, and Dunfermline have sung the song. All of them use the line 'I followed on'. Sunderland have the most complicated lyrics 'When I Was Young, I bought a flute for 50 pence, The only tune that I could play, Was **** and The Toon Army'. I'm off for a Sanatagen winegum and a lay down in a darkened room!
  • The sun'land song is a play on the flute song, sung at England games (in years gone by) and Rangers games, anti IRA song.

Anyway, am I alone in not wanting us to do these ultra type songs, or did you hear what such and such club sing, lets do one ourselves. It used to be about originality, some of the best things I've heard at games were just spontaneous. Sadly that's gone. Oh and it was also being sung by Valencia fans
  • Must say I love the song, I'm 59 and my grandson is 6, both standing together on Saturday belting out 'when I was young', brilliant!
  • MLF. I stand corrected. Seeing as I'm standing, I might as well sing: "Since I Was Wrong, I Sing This Song . . .". :)
  • This is going to be one of those songs that in a few months time every bloody club in the land is going to be singing and the originality will be long gone. Reminds me way too much of the bloody Palace song that has been doing the rounds for the last couple of years now!

Leicester were singing it and the palace song, it's another ultra song.
  • It gives some atmosphere, so what if a few other teams sing it? I'm not a huge fan of the ultra style stuff but would rather that than a quiet ground. It's not our main chant in the same way that 'chrissy powell's red army' isn't, and every club in the country sings a version of that. If you want an original song, stop complaining and write one.
  • Don't care if it is an 'ultra' song (whatever that means these days)
It's catchy, not rude, easy to remember & short.
This 43 yr old will keep belting it out all on her tod like I pretty much have had to do in the M block for the last few seasons.
    Try stop me :-D

  • What's the problem ...it creates an atmosphere, I think it sounds good
  • Not sure if this has been mentioned, Leicester fans were singing this at the Valley on Saturday.

(See video clip linked above): Great atmosphere - I'm in the Lower North and had no idea just how good it is upstairs. Especially like the young woman at the end, waving her cardigan at Chrissy Powell.

I like it , although do think we need to keep coming up with more new songs/ original songs , easier said than done , could do with some musicians who are Charlton fans coming up with a few , they've got to be easy to sing along too as well.

There's about 3 or 4 new songs ready to go to be thrown out there, though too soon yet because of the introduction with this one. Don't want to over do it at once. Though when you say 'Original' song, do you mean a song that nobody has yet used in Football such as a pop song back in the 80's which is yet to be rewritten and converted to be sung in the terraces. Or a brand new tune written by a Charlton fan which could be used?

Personally I think the latter would be great.
  • Stuck in my head all week, would love to know what the new songs that are to weened in are!
  • Lyrics to pre-existing songs (that aren't in Football) are much more likely to catch on and are still somewhat original if no other clubs are using them.

But how many good, catchy pre existing songs are out there that haven't already been used? Has to be ones that people already know.

Am hoping to get another one going by the end of the season. Maybe even by January depending how everyone feels about having another song in so soon after this one.
