Getting behind the curve - Pre season FACTS so far

  • The average amount of arrivals per Championship club so far is 4.

That may be true but 15 of the 24 teams in the league have to improve their squads more than we do, and there is no guarantee that they will be of the required quality.

Did you watch us last season ?? It was only because we had a great run at the end of the season that we finished 9th and in reality that was a false position.........in April we were staring at relegation and we could have very easily ended up in the bottom 6 and anyone who just looks at the final table and thinks we had a good season is very much deluded

Since then we haven't strengthened the squad, but weakened it. I don't care what the other 23 teams did last season or what they are going to do this season - I'm only concerned about us.

    Zzzzzzz......bore off.

If the club said that the plan was to focus on youth, in line with FFP (and obviously that message would need to be carefully crafted so it wasn't "we're broke - lets play the kids"!) then it would be quite positive. I think most of us fans would think it's fair enough that they didn't want to drag us into administration and would get behind a more sustainable model,

I think this scenario may have been the plan from day one. We've not become broke overnight. The money was never really there in the first place. That's not to say that the characters in charge of the club are not very wealthy ,its just they don't intend spending much of their dough on players wages and agents fees. And that is how the idea was sold to them in the first place. They didn't mind parting with a bit of cash at the start of their tenure.Desperately needed new players to replace a largely untalented squad would be a need of the business and also bought them some time to get their second large cash outlay up and running, the academy.Throw in a new big screen and the return of some cheap ticket promotions to keep the natives happy and that's it.Eventually Push the conveyor belt of kids through to the first team, dressed up as a 'cash flow problem'Sell them at a profit and sail off into the sunset.

  • Anyone know what the status is with some other clubs in terms of their playing staff's contracts etc? Is there a database anywhere?

It's way more chaotic than that.

Pah! Have we been sold yet airman?

  • anyone care to estimate what percentage of our wage bill is now in use compared to last year?

    75%, £8m to £6m I'd guess.
  • at least 1.5 from BWP and Fuller?
  • Maybe, strikers generally earn the most and I'd imagine Fuller, BWP and Hayes would have collectively been on a decent whack of our budget.
  • I think that sometimes we get caught up in the negatives

the positives are for me that under RM towards the end we were damn close to admin he pumped his own dough in to keep the wolves from the door

at the min slater has said the same except we question where his dough has come from and the wolves still aint at the door

far too many people feeding lies and half truths to good honest fans who then do their dirty work by posting until facts are known maybe concentrating on building the blocks of defence in case the worst happens should be done quietly rather than openly questioning

I don't trust TJ based on his demeanour and business activities that are in the open domain if you search them it all is very bullish and some may say close to the line

but right now all I am thinking about is football

  • I applaud your chin-up, chest-out stance, NLA, though I must say the business discussed on CL yesterday about the vast majority of our players (and Powell) having only 11 months left on their contracts is a cause for concern. One of the plusses from last night was that all the players looked fit and up for the fight. Two weeks to Bournemouth. Let's go...
  • it is a concern but one we can do little to nothing about, the club is for sale that's obvious, seems very strange to let so many contracts run low, but if we got new owners with more money we wouldn't keep most of them

I don't like it but I spent 2 seasons waking up thinking is today the day the club files for admin no more will I do that
  • the window for new owners is surely closing as the preseason comes to an end, the season starts, and the TW closes. Would you buy a club with so little time to invest in players?
  • nope but then it re opens in jan
  • Well, that's that then, we're doomed.
  • true but personally I'd want a whole season, christmas window is plan C or D?
  • For those seasons where 63 points wouldn't get us near 9th place, I presume the higher teams took more points off the lower teams, so although we would have finished as high as 9th with 63 points, we would probably been a lot more points clear of relegation.

This lot took us over in December.
  • true
  • We are aiming for another year of consolidating, with a possible late promotion charge. The squad is strong although we are obviously having difficulty finding a striker or two.
