  • ^^^ My thought is that he has not re-signed? .. is that right?
  • ......but 1 striker before Saturday would be nice.

Come on. You know you enjoy the tension. Three top notch strikers just before the season starts, perhaps.
  • ^^^ My thought is that he has not re-signed? .. is that right?

strike that .. according to wiki he signed a one year deal in late May 2013, my mistake
  • why are we looking at defenders when we need strikers?
  • ^^^ that m'lud is an oft asked question .. see above for possible answers
  • For a 27 year old to have had only 2 clubs in his career (and played well over 100 games for each), I think that has to be looked at as a positive. Cort and Morrison are currently our favored two center backs, and I'm sure Wood is more than capable of filling the gap that Taylor leaves behind.
  • Back up centre back, free transfer, can no doubt do a job for us. Don't see the problem. Some people will moan about anything.

Dorien had a storming end to the season so I'd put him up there as a potential first choice
  • Sign him up!!

Just want an excuse to sing " Knock on Wood " !!

  • I don't wanna lose this good thing .. that Ive got .. do dah doo do do doo

errrr .. methinks he's only kicking a ball around with the chaps and has not signed on the ..... line as yet

he's sure enough a big unit
  • Wages will be the issue. I suspect he is learning that FFP is hitting the pockets of players, but he may still want more than we are looking to pay, but I like the idea that he is in trial, and I hope we get to see a bit of him at Welling on Saturday.

why are we looking at defenders when we need strikers?

Maybe, and this is a big stretch I know, but just maybe we're looking a more than one player at a time. It's just possible our scouting and coaching staff have the amazing ability to looks at a number of players, in a number of positions.

Unless of course there's some weird league rule that all your scouts are only allowed to look at players in a single position at any one time, and that if you sign a defender this week then you're not allowed to sign any strikers.

This time of year makes me dispair at humanity. All I hear is the same people whinging incessantly about lack of signings, how they're worried, or really worried, or panicking. Get a grip! You'd think some of these people would get embarrassed by saying the same crap year in year out and being proved wrong most years, but no, come May/June/July it's "I'm worried, wah, wah, look at me".

There's a new hobby horse this year, the need some people feel, around a dozen times a day, to state how skint we are. We all f@cking know we're skint, I don't need every 10th post in the rumours thread to be some variation of "Not going to happen, we're skint".

Everytime I see a "we're skint" post, I just want to reply "We know!", but I'm sure by the end of today another half dozen people will feel the pressing need to inflate the number of worthless posts in a thread by telling all us thickos that's we're skint.

The signal to noise ratio is getting worse, for any thread on a subject now a quarter of the posts will be crap puns, half the posts will be personal attacks and point scoring, and a 5th of the posts will be "we're skint". That only leaves 5% of posts for actual useful info.

Can't wait for the season to start, though I'm sure the moaners will fill the threads with more useless and repetitive waste of space posts.

I think this is a whoosh moment...

Frankly I don't care any more, getting fed up of every day coming on here to be met with a wall of abuse, crap puns, and negativity.

100% spot on. Couldn't have put it any better.
  • Dont really know much other then who he has played for an seems solid, im gonna predict him and Morro will be our first choice centre backs. Although i like Cort he is getting a bit old so wouldn't be suprised if come half way through the season Wood has displaced him

I agree. Such posters should be punished.
  • ^^^^^ indeed, they should be sent to Northampton, the new Coventry

Truth is that almost all clubs are skint, and those with money tend to waste their advantage with managers like Pardew signing all sorts of players that don't add anything like a proportional value to their cost. What this means is that it doesn't, really, matter if we are skint when it comes to competing on the field.

Our recent approach of offering short term contracts will give us an advantage in that players, on high money, can be jettisoned as soon as they are not contributing enough compared with their cost. This is especially true if wages are on a downward trend at our level.

I'm optimistic that we will have a good squad by the end of August, and if we are looking at players with pedigree now then it bodes well.

My comment about wages was based more on the players expectations, relative to the market conditions, than our finances themselves.

I'm also not, incidentally, convinced that we are as skint as many seem to think. Certainly, relative to other clubs, I don't think we are in real trouble. The owners are cautious and want to only sign players that offer good value for money, and Chris Powell, rather like Curbishley before him, seems to have bought into that ethos.
  • ^^^ a very good post, realistic and optimistic
  • I make KHA right on this one. Outside of the Premiership, there is not a lot of money in many club's pockets. To be signing proven players on top dosh already a club has to be a) minted b) desperate c) both. I mean if there is competition for the likes of Lee Martin then imagine how tricky it would be to get an actual decent winger on the quiet, much less a striker.
People are saying 'you need lots of money for a good striker' are wrong. Yann Kermorgant is one of the best strikers we've had since the premiership days, he was picked up from the reserves of a middling sized club on a freebie, I doubt even now that his wages are extortionate. That's not to say CP & co don't make mistakes, but they get it right far more than they get it wrong IMO, something very few Charlton managers of recent times can say.
If we get to end of July without even a hint of a signing, or start signing up a bunch past-their prime League One cast-offs of no particular repute, THEN I will be worried (but I still think CP could work his magic). But until then, no-one at the club wins if we don't strengthen and stay up, and they know it.
  • Think there will be a lot of players available who've failed to find a contract - better to wait and see if we're hard up.
We should have enough for mid-table security which is probably the most realistic given our resources. There are a lot of better off teams in this division.

    That's a very negative post.

Well I can be as hypocritical as the next man, which one of the things I left off of my rant, that two 'h's the infect far too many posts, hypocrisy and hyperbole :p

  • i like you andy
  • Think he scored against us when we won 3-2 in first season in Championship? Were 2-0 down at half time and then Reid and Iwelumo (2) scored.

That was Tommy Spurr who scored
