It's worth pointing out that Bournemouth are only charging that much because they have a tiny ground and have to try and cover the fee they have to pay to Real.
Leicester have a 30k seater stadium and charged their fans less than £25 for a friendly a couple of years ago. And they sold out.
If it was at the Valley, i doubt we'd be charged 60 quid.
Yes and I'm pretty certain most would too no matter how much they would moan about it.
I am guessing you are quite young Tom, and assume you can speak for the world. Well old son, you can't. I am pretty certain that anyone who has been into football since players earned good money rather than stupid money would probably not. I can see Real Madrid on the tele if I want to. If Charlton were playing them in a competetive match then yes I would, for a friendly never, even if they were playing Di Stefano and Puskas...
26 actually, and have been watching Charlton for 20 years. I'm still confident that most would end up going after the hype and pre-match excitement building up to the day.
Us playing Real Madrid is still a very abstract idea, because it has never happened. If it were to one day be announced that we were playing them in a friendly with £60 tickets, the tune would be a lot different.
Half the board were talking about not renewing season tickets last year, but I'd be very surprised if the majority have followed through with that threat.
As I said, you are young. The twenty years you have been watching football co-incides with Sky taking the game over. You may have been elected spokesman for your generation, but not for mine. The re-newing season tickets thing is totally different, it's about loyalty ( and suffering ), not about being impressed by celebrity and fame, and judging everything by its cost, rather than its value. You are completely entitled to your opinion Tom, and you are erudite and intelligent, but please stop assuming everyone has the same opinion as you, or would react as you do given a certain set of circumstances.
I may be young but my first experiences of the game actually coincided with a time when Charlton didn't have a pot to piss in or a ground to call their own. The 'Sky' argument really doesn't hold up in the case of a club like ours in the early-mid 90s in my opinion. At the end of the day, we still support a small club with players who still only earn 'good' money rather than ridiculous money.
So by your logic, we shouldn't offer any kind of assumption as to what Chris Powell is up to (because we aren't Football managers)? Or we shouldn't talk about what Wise and Jiminez are up to (because we aren't involved in the court case)?
A number on this thread alone have already hinted at how they would find ways to talk themselves into going. You might not do personally, but I still think that many, many would. That's not me being a 'spokesperson' or any other patronizing term you want to use, that's just what I think would happen.
Not a chance I would pay £60. I'm not a Real Madrid fan, nor am I in awe of them like so many football fans are. I could care less about saying I watched Real play at the Valley, I'm happier to say I was at Barnsley away.
I go to games for my love of Charlton, not my love of football. My love for football is nicely covered by a good game on sky.
Is a game against Real Madrid ever really a 'friendly' in the eyes of a club like Bournemouth?
Not really IMO - it's likely to be the most anticipated match the club has ever had. So it's not 'just a friendly'
That's absurd. It's not a competitive match, so it's just a grotesque circus for financial gain. I guarantee that the Bournemouth staff and players consider their match against us to be far more important.
I'm sure that's what they'll say in the press and to supporters. However there is no doubt in my mind that the players will be looking at that Real Madrid match and feeling 10x the excitement than being at home to Charlton in a regular Championship game. Not even debatable really.
Not much room for manoeuvre there Tom. You are pretty confident that you know exactly what is going on in the Bournemouth players minds...
Yes and I'm pretty certain most would too no matter how much they would moan about it.

What's his age got to do with anything ? Nothing wrong with Tom's viewpoint whatsoever, its just different to mine and yours. You're coming across as patronising Algarve.

Yes, I am. I think its only natural for a player to be excited about coming up against one of the greatest sides of all time. Do you think the likes of Simon Francis, or any of those players, will ever get the chance to play such opposition again in his career? No. But he can play regular lower league games week in and week out for the rest of his career if he wants.
Even though it is only a friendly, it would be hard to hold it against them for feeling that way. Again, just how I see it.
I agree with Tom, i would've thought it pretty much guaranteed that any Bournemouth player will be looking forward to the Madrid match far more than our game.
Sorry Dan, several times Tom has told us what we would all do if certain circumstances arose.
"Us playing Real Madrid is still a very abstract idea, because it has never happened. If it were to one day be announced that we were playing them in a friendly with £60 tickets, the tune WOULD be a lot different."
I find it patronising for him to assume what I and others would do, and to suggest we don't know our own minds. His age is relevant because he used Charlton not having their own ground as some kind of reason why he is entitled to second guess people, at six years old I would have had no idea of the relevance of that, but not wishing to do what I am accusing him of I will accept that was unfair of me.

Like I said, others on here have already indicated that they would feel themselves changing their minds as time went on.

Absolutely agree with this, very well said, Algarve. I also rather object to various posters on this thread telling me I "probably would go to the game" if it were actually staged. I say what I mean and mean what I say: I would not go.

Ok we get Barcelona instead of Real Madrid , Messi is fit again and will definately play , are you telling me when push came to shove , you would turn down a once in a lifetime chance to see his only EVER appearance at the Valley?
Blimey i'd be wanting to tell my grandkids (not that i've got any yet!) that i'd seen the greatest player thats ever be seen at the Valley , and would consider it a honour to be there , rather than them saying Grandad why are you so tight?

I respect your opinion, but mine is quite different. I'd want to tell my grandkids - and I haven't got any yet, either! - that I refused to spectate on a bizarre circus that was designed only to inflate fragile egos and line someone's pocket, and went to watch a truly competitive game somewhere else instead.
No. And immense stick do Bournemouth's stupid owners deserve. It's the people running the game taking it along this road, and only a mug would go along with it.
I agree with Tom, i would've thought it pretty much guaranteed that any Bournemouth player will be looking forward to the Madrid match far more than our game.
I suspect that the Bournemouth manager and coaches look upon this "celebratory exhibition match", as the club website airily bills it, as an unnecessary distraction. They will be striving to get their players geared up to competitive Championship level, not relishing the possibility of having to lift their confidence after a meaningless tonking.
Incidentally, along with the much more sustaining excitement of being back in the second tier after so long, Bournemouth will be very nervous about having to face us first off. Our impressive away form last season will worry them - and I expect us to play there with an assured authority.
Yes and I'm pretty certain most would too no matter how much they would moan about it.

Yes, I would turn it down, for various reasons, none of them financial.
EDIT. No scrub that. I would turn out for a tenner, or maybe even twenty quid, as I would if it were any decent pre- season opposition. As I did when I lived in the UK. I wouldn't cut off my nose to spite my face, but I would refuse to weigh out sixty quid to boost the pockets of a bunch of multi-millionaires even further. That's just taking the piss.

Your grandkids will probably not know/care who Messi is. Bring at Barnsley 0-6 (SIX) away last season would be more impressive, a club record in a game that mattered, not some circus that sums up everything wrong with modern football.
BIG IF .. it were the first team of course I would, a once in a blue moon chance ... to watch Real Madrid reserves? .. not a chance .. but how does one know the line up before match kick off time unless guarantees are in place?
My Bournemouth supporting colleague was taking the piss today. 'Who are you playing? Welling isn't it' I then asked him if he'd be going and the reply 'was not at £60 - they're having a laugh!'
I was at Barmsley FOD, but I still wouldn't mind Barcelona at the Valley, and yes I'm going to Welling and prob ICT, as long as their star 80 pound striker is playing. :-0

Therein lies a huge potential problem. If Madrid play to their full potential, they could well knock up a score in double figures. Will that happen? I very much doubt it. Supposing they go 2 or 3 goals up early on, will they be encouraged to go for it? I'd be amazed if they were. I'd think it's far more likely that they'll be under orders to knock it around, keep it pretty, show off a few tricks and don't worry if you gift The Cherries a soft goal late on to even it up a bit. That's not sport, that's The Harlem Globetrotters.
In short, if Madrid play their best, Bournemouth will be annihilated and could start the season with a motivation problem. If they don't, anyone who's payed £60 has been mugged-off. I'd rather us play Welling thanks.
60 quid for a pre-season friendly is taking the piss, no matter who the opposition is. Pre season friendlies are a nice way to ease yourself into the season, but they're not the same as proper matches, and being expected to pay even more than normal for one is just ridiculous. People making comparisons to tickets for gigs and comedy shows are forgetting that acts doing warm-up shows in preparation for the Edinburgh festival or a big tour sell tickets cheap because they know they won't be up to full strength yet. The same should apply here.
For a competitive match I might be able to justify the expense, in the same way as I would for the exorbitant prices Wembley charge for a cup final ticket. I'm a Charlton fan, not a Real fan, and the attraction of seeing us play them would be in how our players would match up against theirs in a competitive game, enjoying the atmosphere a competitive match generates, and revelling in the possibility of an "I was there" moment. If all I was interested in was admiring the silky skills of their players, I could just as easily do that for free when they're on the telly.

"Mitchell - You are a piece of s**t. Is this how you want to treat loyal supporters?"
What does he expect, football for a fiver? It's Real Madrid not Dover Athletic. No one is forcing anyone to go.
I think it's a good thing, the owners are obviously paying out of their own pockets and raising the profile of the club. And still they get stick.
Even though it is only a friendly, it would be hard to hold it against them for feeling that way. Again, just how I see it.

I wouldn't cut off my nose to spite my face, but I would refuse to weigh out sixty quid to boost the pockets of a bunch of multi-millionaires even further. That's just taking the piss.
In short, if Madrid play their best, Bournemouth will be annihilated and could start the season with a motivation problem. If they don't, anyone who's payed £60 has been mugged-off. I'd rather us play Welling thanks.
Just not bothered by this RM team. Full of players i have seen before. What Barcelona have achieved since 2009 had been incredible .
Who ever played i could see it all being à big let down.
