  • Spoke to waggy at player of the year tonight and I am truly gutted he is going. He is one of life's good guys, he loves the club and says he would gladly accept any contract offered at the club to stay even knowing first team oppatunities would be limited. He said he would never sign for palarse or millwank as after spending 15 years at the club he knows what the club is about. Surely we can do something to get him offered a contract even club together, pay for him like fans have done in the past. We will regret letting this true good guy go!

Just an academy player who didnt turn out good enough to me.
  • Not been so upset since Derek Hales left!.....
  • Always sad to see an academy product go but as nice and commited a guy Waggy is i've always found him a frustrating player. Great in a few games with some important goals but rarely beat a man and his final ball was often lacking. He could be someone that returns to bite us on the bum given enough game time but the club has to take tough decisions with player contracts. Anyway I wish him all the very best wherever he ends up
  • Sad to see Waggy go - as people have said a great professional and a Charlton boy.

Pleased to have been at Barnsley to see his debut and glad he got on for 10 minutes on Saturday. He was devastated when he missed his one good chance.

Best of luck in the future Scotty boy - you'll always be welcomed back.
  • We are going to need real strength in depth if we are to push for promotion next year. I cannot think of a more suitable squad player than Waggy. You can always be sure he's going to give 100% and will very often chip in with crucial goals. He would be a rare commodity in that he'd be happy to contribute be that as a first team regular or a squad player. I get the impression that if he could afford to play for Charlton for nothing, he would. I would like Powell to think this through again, it's not as if we have a huge squad.

Totally agree! I feel so gutted that such a decent guy and player is being cast aside. I wish you well, Scott, in your next move and thanks for the passion and fight you brought to CAFC. Please let SCP have a change of heart over the next few weeks!

I think the club are trying to do right for him. Some players have class in the real sense and they get respect back when they come back, playing for opponents. If Darren Bent played against us, we would cheer him. Same with Jonjo and Waggy is firmly on that list. It probably doesn't matter to most people, where the be all and end all is about wealth creation, but I think it means a lot more.

It is an old fashioned view, but how you conduct yourself in life is much more important than how much money you make.

Who knows, he could make himself a better player with the regular first team football he needs and come back. The overwhelming majority, wish him every success.
  • I realised last night why CP won't play Waggy. Chris is fiercely proud of his title of 'Nicest man in Football' and realises that if Scott gets much more play and becomes a bit more famous then he is going to steal that title. So Chris is protecting his title by not picking Scott and is now going one step further by moving him on.
  • He has displayed no little ability and great industry, commitment since he first emerged 6 seasons ago and I have little doubt the club has given much thought to retaining his services. In truth he has had opportunities to seal a first team spot but has one season apart has never quite had the consistency to become an automatic choice, as per a Solly, Morrisson or Wiggins.

Despite his undoubted talent I am not sure his skill set sits comfortably in any one position. Played wide right he has the pace but how often does he get behind opposing defences? How consistent is his crossing? Industrious in defence is he as solid as Pritchard or Wilson? If the playing style of the squad changes (which it has ) you have to be honest with the player. I suspect Danny Green may face a similar challenge in securing a regular first team spot.

I do wish he had shown he had the vision to play in central midfield or the presence to play up front on a regular basis. One concern is that there does not seem to have been a queue of clubs looking to take him on loan.

He is a player I will always remember fondly and would happily welcome back but for now sitting on the bench or more recently in the stand on match days at this stage in his career is no longer really a wise option.

He needs to play - I wish him the very best.

  • Doesn't quite have enough in his locker at this level, but always gave everything he had.
Consumate professional - I hope he is a success wherever he ends up

People are too quick to concentrate on what a player can't do and not to acknowledge what they do bring toba side. Waggy is quick, hardworking, with lots of stamina and scores more than his fair share of goals.

Good luck Waggy, I have always liked you as a player and am sad to see you go.

    87 starts 53 sub appearances 22 goals.

Charlton Life Darling Goldenbollocks Stupidhaircut 38 starts 17 sub appearances 4 goals.

The league table shows Powell's selections to have been largely right this season but please don't denigrate one of the most honest, hardworking and decent pros of recent years because he didn't make the side too often during the season just past.

    NIcely put.

Club wanted him to stay. Fans wanted him to stay. And clearly Scott Wagstaff wanted to stay...

But there's only 11(18) places in the squad for any one game. He's at a vital stage in his football career and needs games to mature and round his overall game. He won't get that here anymore and is actually in danger of going backwards as a result. Powell must feel a duty to do what is in everyone's best long term interests.

Been a great servant and going to be a great player for whoever he goes to. I was surprised that Orient didn't fancy him earlier in the season.
  • I still hope he stays even though it seems inevitable that he's out of the door already.

I can only echo what others have said, thanks for your great services to this club and I wish you the very best of luck wherever you end up.
  • He leaves with his head held high. Never moaned, always put a shift in. And scored some fantastic goals for us. Best of luck in your future career Waggy!
  • Where is he going to end up?
Great player, great attitude, charlton in his heart...but agree if he wants regular football a move is best for him.
  • He said last night he is willing to fight for his place. Players that are desperate to play for a club are a rear thing. He said last night he knows what is expected of a Charlton player, for a club that has struggled to retain its identity with its playing staff in some very tough recent years players like waggy are to valuable to let go.
  • Has this been confirmed?

    Never moaned...well only at referees.

  • Very disappointed about this-I thought the four or five games he started this season were his best in a Charlton shirt but, tellingly, he still got dropped by Powell and gradually eased out of the squad altogether. He obviously doesn't rate him too highly so it's probably best he does move on but I personally don't agree with the decision.

Good post, Grapevine . My sentiments in there too.

Wish him all the luck in the world .

Yes, he told me ... and others ... last night
  • Will solly's performances now drop dramatically now his best mate's leaving the club?
  • Will solly's performances now drop dramatically now his best mate's leaving the club?

Why would it? Waggy was missing from the squad for a while, went out on loan, never seemed to affect Solly before.
  • Just because he hasn't fitted into SCP's plans does mean for one minute that he will not thrive and develop under a different manager with a different ethos. Moving away from Charlton could perversely be the making of him, I do hope so he has been an excellent servant to CAFC. Particularly enjoyed the winner away against Stockport!

This is totally based on my view but I wonder if they are as close these days. They always used to walk the lap of honour together, be the first to congratulate or console each other and buy each other drinks. I didn't seem them together much at all on Saturday. I only saw both of them with a queue of people on Sunday though so did anyone else still get the impression they were still co-joined twins?

I'd like to see him stay and love his attitude, but where does he fit into CP's style of play and team? As a winger he's good, he tracks back well etc, but he doesn't cross the ball well, as a forward he doesn't quite cut it. On the left we now have Callum Harriott...

At best he's going to be a squad player and soak up wages - I'd let him go and allow him to get regular football, otherwise his career could end up going nowhere and we'll release him in two years time when he might find it trickier to get a contract. By saving on his wages we can get in someone specific for the role who strengthens the team and squad.

Good luck to him - there's a good footballer in there and he'll be some team's fan favourite.
  • It will be a very sad day when he leaves. I still believe he would be a very good player to keep next year and is not on the wages that mean we need to shift him. Never gave anything other than his all and made a huge differance when he played on the left wing and was one of the main reasons we turned things around this season. Great scoring record and I suspect we maybe looking at him in a couple of years time thinking why we let him go.

I hear there are several clubs interested, including the Gills, and he is seeing his agent this week.

    Sad.
