Wolves got what they deserved. For a team desperate for points their lack of urgency and ambition amazed me. Hope they go down.

    100% THIS!!!

Thought they were rubbish. Total lack of ambition from the off. Don't like Wolves. Their fans always seem like they're stuck in the 70's to me.

Yeh, theres an arrogant toerag near me who gave it large about "Charlton who?" in our first season in league one when Wolves were fresh in t'Premiership. Saw him this afternoon about 7pm. He doesn't look so smug now, the git.
  • Dull first half, enjoyed the second. Two scrappy goals, Wolves tactics too negative playing 1 up front and coming for the draw in the situation they are in, don't rate Saunders as a manager. Injuries helped us as we needed Green to stretch the play.
  • I took my four year old son to his first ever game and we sat in the North East quadrant. He was getting a little bored in the first half, and not surprisingly as it wasn't the best advert for a football match as it lacked few chances. The only one of note I can remember was Henry's long range shot which Hamer seemed to watch past him onto the woodwork. Thankfully the game improved a little in the second half but still not a great game. The cross from Green for our first goal was right in front of us and he seemed to miss hit it but luckily it delivered onto the six yard box to be toe poked in after a bit of a scramble. I couldn't comment on Hunt's tackle as our view was obscured by some of the players. We were sat in the fifth row so had a view at pitch level. It was a gritty performance and in my opinion maybe a share of the points would have been a fairer result. However, trying to keep a four year old entertained does not give you a fair reflection of the whole game. We missed Obika's goal after I had to take him to the toilet so I look forward to seeing his third 90th minute goal for Charlton on the highlights later.
  • All a bit grim but 3 games in a week would explain that and brilliant effort to come away with the points. I wanted Green on as thought his crossing could make a difference and we could threaten them that way - though didn't expect it the way the 1st came. He was warming up near me and he was definitely buzzing and wanted to get on.

As others have said, Wolves' approach was just bewildering given their situation - they seem to be relying on other teams losing and the closeness of the division to somehow stay up. Waited to go a goal down to start putting a shift in, and the most passion I saw from any of them was Johnson sprinting the length of the pitch to get involved with the Hunt-Hamer situation - but apart from that, not bothered. And he's supposed to be one of their leaders.

Can't see Fuller starting at Boro - poor today and Obika deserves a go.
  • Not the most exciting game and not the best performance, from either side, but I'll take a last minute winner any day. Have a read of my thoughts on the game here: http://chrispowellsflatcap.wordpress.com/2013/04/20/obika-pounces-to-wound-wolves-survival-hopes/

No way Hamer to blame for their goal it was perfectly placed not sure our CHs can say the same

Just seen it on tv and I still think it looks as though he could have got it if he dived. Easier sitting in the stands though!
  • Scrappy game, but difficult to get the ball down and play on that surface, and you were taking a chance striking the ball first time. Both teams were forced to help the ball on in midfield.

Fantastic end to the season. Four wins and 2 draws from the last 6 games. Once the manager stabilised the Central Midfield, we've looked a different team.

Thought Gower did well coming off the bench, passed it well, switched the direction of play well and tidied up in front of the Back Four. Hughes has been magnificent over the previous 5 games, a solid experienced pro, who as the continuity player has knitted it all together, made the system function and made everyone around him look better players.

Big praise for the Opposition Scouts who covered the Wolves in the past couple of weeks. They used 4 different Corner routines in the opening period and we had a defender waiting in the area the ball was played into on each occasion. Good Planning by the manager and coaches. Not sure what happened on the Wolves goal though. Compare our defending to the mess they made of defending the corner on our first goal.
  • Loads of consistent views on this thread, and I can only agree with the majority of them. I did not think that Morro had a bad game; in the first half in particular he did well. Solly and Wiggins were sound as always and Dervite had one of his best games for us. Callum did ok, as did Pritch, although both tend to get muscled out of the play a bit easily. Gower looked well off the pace, which is understandable, but got better as the game went on. Up front we were very poor; Fuller so slow, immobile and predictable whilst Yann battled as always but gave the ball away time and time again. Green showed again that he has more skill than most. If he could battle as well, and do it on a more consistent basis, he could yet play a successful role for us.

With two games to go, in 9th position, mathematically safe from the drop, still with a very slim chance of making the play offs, destined for a top half position with over 60 points - all pretty good going, a big step up from last year and a strong foundation on which to build further. Very happy with all that.
  • Thought game was like a game of Poker. We are a counter attacking side, and I'm sure Chrissy thought that Wolves would be a bit more offensive as 3 points is massive in their situation at this stage. Saunders probably thought that as we were the home team on form we would be more open and was hoping to catch us out. As neither team were positive, chances and entertainment were at a premium. It got a bit better after the goal, is the best you can say about that match. 3 points is 3 points though.

  • Hughes going off made a big impact I think. He has been like a rock the past few games and our balance and confidence seemed to drop a bit when he went off. Don't know why. Then Jacko going didn't help. I thought Gower was poor. Obika and Green definitely made an impact.

At the end our defense was panicking a bit and almost threw the lead away. Was it Morrison who made a real hurried hash of a clearance? Sliced it up in the air or something like that. Why panic like that?

Overall a good win but we never looked really comfortable. I thought they were a big team and, to me, seemed to be winning most of the physical battles.

    Posting without reading as usual.

Well it all ended happily ever after as they say but it was a strange route arriving at that point

We started ok putting Wolves under a bit of pressure but without really creating very much. Then, 10 minutes in, Hughes got injured and had to go off. Anyone who wonders what he (Hughes) brings to the table only had to watch our rudderless performance for the rest of the first half. Our only saving grace was that Wolves, with the honourable exception of Stephen Hunt, looked strangely disinterested and uncommitted for a team in the bottom 3 at kick off. The one real danger moment in the entire half for either team was Henry's shot from distance which dipped wickedly at the last minute, crashing the woodwork at the join of post and bar.

The second half started with marginally more urgency from both teams and then catastrophe struck when the skipper stretched to shoot and appeared to injure his hamstring and indeed left the field shortly afterwards. Green took what looked to be a mishit low corner which De Vries somehow failed to claim cleanly and Big Dorian crashed the ball in from close range. We then reverted to our bad old ways of sitting back and seasoned Charlton watchers knew that the equaliser was only a matter of time as the entire midfield and defence had an attack of "after you Claude" enabling Doyle to score almost unopposed.

Powell then took off a largely ineffective Fuller to introduce Obika and sure enough supersub did the business on the stroke of 90 minutes.

The ref must have thought 5 minutes wasn't enough additional time at the end of the first half as he went for 6 minutes this time! Either that or he had a score draw on his coupon.

Anyway we held out and look set fair for a top half finish, even top ten, which is a tremendous achievement for Chris and the boys in a difficult season.

As for Wolves the demeanour of most of their players, Hunt excepted, reminded me of the dross that got us relegated in 2008/9. I think they are going down.
  • hows me14 doing?
  • We'll play a lot better than that and still lose. Thankfully, Wolves were no better. Here's the goals:

  • First half was pretty bleak, second half was fun. I actually wanted Green on for Hughes as I felt this game suited Green's direct running and crossing ability. Delighted with his impact when he came on, even if his corner for the goal was atrocious. He was the best player on the pitch in terms of his direct approach against a weak team. MOTM overall was Dervite though. In the first half he was outstanding with his defending and he definitely deserved a goal to show for his performance. He even looked good going forward towards the end. Gower looked rusty but he also provided the two best passes of the game so it's clear he has it in his locker. Obika showed in a few minutes what Fuller should have been showing all game. He seemed to love his moment after the final whistle where he was clapped off as well.

Highlight of the day for me though took place after the game. By the player's entrance a bloke decided to go off at the Wolves players milling about for their lack of passion on the pitch. Cue hilarity when it turned out he was a Charlton fan. Genuinely the funniest thing I've seen in ages
  • The first half was a great endorsement for why I've not been much lately. Heard a lot about Hughes and how he was a Scholes type-agewise and was disappointed he had to go off. Game livened up after we scored. I must say Wolves were terrible, how bad are Barnsley on that basis?
Not read all the comments but skimmed through here and the player-marks, I personally thought the lad Herriot had a very good game but no one else seems to have mentioned him.
  • We got lucky today ............. Wibble.
  • Wolves got what they deserved. For a team desperate for points their lack of urgency and ambition amazed me. Hope they go down.

Great User pic Clem - my hero

"Junior - you want somthin?.... Slush Puppy daddy"

Another 3 points today, lovely jubbly, keep up the momentum

If we beat Bristol City (or Boro) we should be guaranteed a top half finish, looking at the goal differences, and we could only drop to 12th if Millwall take 10 points out of 12.

Great end of season run, which shows what might have been if there had been even modest additional investment ... or even if Andy Hughes had been fit earlier.
  • Looking at Stig's first video/Dervite's goal there are eight or nine Wolves defenders in the box and only three Charlton players. They had enough men to mark Dervite and/or simply deal with the corner. Fortunately for us they decided to play statues.

They don't tuck their jumpers in do they Cabron?
  • Didn't think it was as bad a game as some make out.

We were effectively playing for nothing, so the impetus on Wolves was to shape the game. They were awful, for a side that should be scrapping for their lives they had such little commitment. You look at the decent collection of names in their squad and basically it was us from when we got relegated.

Don't think anyone particularly stood out. The left side with Wiggins / Harriott is looking very strong, Green had a bit of an impact when he come. Fuller was a bit of a disappointment for me, maybe one game too many for him.

And finally Obika. Me and my pals have been making right tits of ourselves with that silly song and over the top acclaiming of him. for him to get another late.winner was one of the most beautiful football moments I can remember !

really dont get the high marks for Green. The first goal came from a corner he effed up, and the second came from a shot of his where he should have done better. Aside from that i dont recall him doing much of note - after all, we hardly did much of note in 2nd half attacking wise.nd he was only on for what,25 mins !!

We may not have done much of note, but what little we did was mostly thanks to Green's impact, and I saw that as someone who's not a massive fan of his. The corner we scored from was awful, but he did take some good ones, and looked committed today, which isn't/wasn't always the case.
  • The ball seemed to be in the air a lot which suited the big Wolves side. Nice to see a bit of grass on our pitch but it was very bumpy and may have led to all the mislaid passes. None of Kermy's flicks seemed to pay off. Harriot did well but Pritch was anonymous today. Jacko was not making an impact so it suited us to replace him with Green who did give us impetus when he came on. A bit of a lucky win. Wolves were a horror show. Very poor.
  • I think Green has on the whole been a massive disappointment but credit where it's due. He came on and offered us width on the right which stretched Wolves.
  • Remembering the last home game we had v Wolves (we lost 4-1, Nicky Bailey scored first) -i remember Henry being terrific that day , up and down and harrying all day - yesterday, aside from his 45 yarder, he was woeful - as were most of the Wolves team.As most people say, relegation beckons methinks, and they've still got to play Brighton away on last day.though i can see them getting 3 points v Burnley next weekend.
  • Decided to leave posting until the day after.......so I could get over another win!

First half started off well soon to be followed by plenty of dirge and numerous breaks in play grinding the momentum to a halt. Wolves highlight of the half easily being Karl Henrys Giggs-esque strike bouncing down off the bar in front of the goal line, with no Solskjaer to finish off ( if there had they could easily claim the football brain of the year ).

Fuller had our best chance when shooting first time only to see Devries palm away the effort.

I will put the poor half down to Andy Hughes going off injured leaving the rest of the field wondering where the entertainment would come from.

Second half livened up a bit, a few tea cups at half time being kicked to show how it should be done.
JJ’s enforced substitution saw Green on and within 2 minutes a goal. Green putting in a grass cutter that caused panic only for Dervite to score another contender for goal of the season.
3 minutes later Robinson chucks one in that paralyses our defence and Doyle slips in unmarked to head in off the post. Hamer probably not having much time to dive down to his left due to the angle of the header. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Obika coming on for Fuller looked obvious enough as the latter was tiring and also increasing our chances of another last minute goal that we are famous for. Wiggins cross was missed by everyone rushing in on goal leaving Green to lash in with his left. Or control with his right, shoot, bounce off a defenders head into the path of Obika to rifle home with his left. All Obika needs now is a last minute right footed tap in against Bristol City and he will have created another Charlton record being the first striker to score the perfect last minute hat trick. Over three consecutive games. At home. In the sunshine.

The first half was terrible with little composure, only a few decent runs from Harriot and a shot from Fuller. The injuries didn't help to Andy Hughes and the Wolves defender with the referee not helping the flow of the game with lots of little free kicks, given mostly to Wolves.

Saunders before the game, said that he was going to play Charlton at their own game. I was pleased in some way, as an opponent was trying to adapt themselves to the way that we play rather than the other way around. Wolves had no teeth up front. Apart from Hunt no energy. A poor team, given the quality that they have. They reminded me a bit like Blackburn at home, when we played them.

As other posters point out, we looked a different less assured team without Andy Hughes, who plays the holding role well and allows other players to concentrate on their own positions. Johnnie Jackson is much better up the pitch. Hughes gives great cover to the Back 4.

In the 2nd half some of the Charlton defending was totally hapless with lots of sliced and bungled clearances. Some of it totally comical. I think that had a lot to do with the reduced protection in front of the central defenders.

Lots of nasty and niggly tackles from Wolves, particularly the Hunt studs up on Hamer. + The dive to get a booking and the blocking of the goalkeeper. The Wolves players did not want to seem to work hard and harry and when beaten resorted to fouls and pull backs. It is no wonder they are in the bottom 3 as their team seem to lack, fight, spirit and togetherness. That's Charlton's got lots of; and maybe Wolves need to rediscover that in League One.

Their play did them no favours, as that seemed to spur the Charlton players and the crowd on to get the victory. Not a nice team Wolves and of the Wolves crowd that I met on the way to the ground, and some of the post contributions on the web seemed totally ignorant.

They lived up to their reputation. Whereas the Leeds fans last home game were very decent. I am really glad that we beat them.

The last time we beat Wolves was in the 2003/04 premiership season, when we won 2-0, with Scott Parkers last game for Charlton when we were 4th in the Premiership.

Good subs, and the right players brought on. Danny Green got x2 assists and Jonathan Obika excellent finish again.

3 points. 3 consecutive home victories. Championship safety confirmed. Well done to Charlton, Chris Powell and the Charlton crowd for sticking with the team.

  • Wolves fans also looking forward to some 'different' local derbies next year !...
'At least there will be plenty of "derbies" next year... Walsall, Coventry, Shrewsbury, Port Vale and maybe even Burton Albion! Also plenty of teams I haven't seen play. I'm always trying to find a silver lining!'
