"You should have stayed at Charlton" :-)0

I think Man U would be closely monitoring the discipline of even fringe players. He was their youth player of the year, the season after signing from us, so doubt he was just left in a corner to get on with it. Some folk just have the talent but not the right mentality.ShootersHillGuru said:I think he will benefit from getting out of of Man Utd where he is a very peripheral figure and probably not subject to the discipline of first team squad involvement. The extra responsibility and commitment might just be what he needs. Lets hope so for his sake. Would be such a shame for an obvious talent being wasted.

Wasn't "released" as was offered a one year deal but chose to get first team football.
Would have come back to Charlton if offered the chance but no contact was made.0 -
Absolutely right. My post was meant to highlight professional discipline ie, training, attitude, ambition rather than being a naughty boy.Mortimerician said:

I know for a fact he was offered a one year deal but both parties mutually agreed that maybe he was best off somewhere to get first team football.0

Sky Sports understands Rochdale defender Sean McGinty is set to join Halifax Town on loan. Rochdale have converted former Manchester United youngster from a left-back to a centre-back and would only let him go out on loan to a club prepared to play McGinty at centre half. They turned down requests from several league clubs to take McGinty on loan as a left-back with Halifax promising to play McGinty as a central defender.

If a youth player wants to leave Charlton in the future for a big club just shove a print out of Sean McGinty's Wikipedia page in front of him instead of an improved Contract!!3

All this moving about must really get his goat.7

Sean McGinty has been released by Rochdale, Where did the hopeful footballer go wrong?0

Sean McGinty,Casey Palmer you lucky boys.
Wasn't Jermain Defoe the last youngster under 17 to walk away and have a good career ?
Still you can always tell your Grand children how great it was to be on the bench for United and Chelsea's U18's.
And that you had a great career in the conference south.1 -
Maybe he was just over hyped and never would have made it, even had he stayed with us and moving to Utd and a larger pay packet was the best thing he could have done for his long term future. We will never know. At least we got £500K which, in hindsight, looks pretty good.2

Which is why I have nothing but admiration for the likes of Lawrie Wilson and George Boyd. They didn't walk away but, having been released at a young age, worked their way up from the Conference to enjoy a decent career.soapboxsam said:Sean McGinty,Casey Palmer you lucky boys.

They are out of order for walking out but the club are ok to release no questions asked. Works both ways.1

Very basic/simple way of looking at it.MrOneLung said:They are out of order for walking out but the club are ok to release no questions asked. Works both ways.

I don't blame youngsters leaving tbh. They all have a confidence in their own ability and the prospect of failure doesn't and shouldn't come into it. When Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea come knocking telling you and your mum and dad how fantastic it's going to be and dangling more money than you've ever seen in front of you the choice might be there but it's always going to come down to leaving. It's not always for the best but inevitable.
Is it any different from us signing youngsters from Ireland or Hungary or from Bury like Nick Pope ? Not really just at a different level.5 - Sponsored links:

Sean Mc Ginty had loads of ability but it was his application that let him down. Liked going out clubbing and getting wasted more than he did playing football. At U18 level he was top class.1

Rob Lee and Mark Stuart were both young products of the Charlton youth ...stuart arguably had more natural talent, but Charlton was the highlight of his career, whereas Lee went in to play for Englsnd. Stuart later admitted that his career floundered because of his attitude and application ... Clubbing, smoking and girls .... Talent isn't every thing.0

Yet he still scored a winning goal at the Stretford End.1

Kap, Are you sure that was Mark Stuart and not Jamie Stuart ?Kap10 said:Rob Lee and Mark Stuart were both young products of the Charlton youth ...stuart arguably had more natural talent, but Charlton was the highlight of his career, whereas Lee went in to play for Englsnd.
