It's crunch time for the owners.

edited March 2013 in General Charlton
After having managed to get us into the Championship, the next two games are massively important. With apparently little money to spend, they cannot afford to face relegation. If this week goes badly, they will be forced to consider whether they stick with CP or gamble on finding someone who can do better. That's if they can find anyone to take us on. If CP were not a much loved Charlton legend, a lot of Clubs would already be collecting a list of available names. How many supporters are we going to lose if the team continue to play rubbish at home ? It's now frequently discussed that we don't need to have a season ticket any more, we can choose a Stand and unfortunately choose a game that we fancy. There is not much communication from the owners, SOS.

  • If there is a real risk of relegation and Powell can't turn it around, they will bring in somebody else.
  • I think that come the end of the season, before if their hand is forced, that they will replace CP anyway.

We don't have the money for someone else. Anybody currently out of work would put a premium on their services if it's a relegation battle.

A few people at the weekend said Paul Hart might get the nod but I would think that would be to the detriment of our youth setup.

I still have faith in Chris Powell but something really does need to happen to stop the rot

  • We need at most 7 points from 11 games. No team with anything close to our current points total after this many games has gone down in recent years.

Once again the CL hyperbole and panic system goes into overdrive.

Simple truth is we are poor at home and reasonable away. We will have enough point to ensure safety by the time the kids go back to school after the easter break, if not sooner.

At the start of the season everybody (ok, nearly everybody) would have taken a mid-table finish this year. We're online for that, so all this hand wringing and gnashing of teeth really is unnecessary and rather irritating.
  • You'd think we were in the relegation places looking at this thread. There are worst sides around us and below us, EVERYONE is inconsistant in this league, not just us. Those that aren't are gonna be in the prem next season.
  • If they got rid of Powell it would be there biggest mistake. If Powell goes we'll be in a bi relegation fight, no doubt about it.

I agree with this, however I would say that I think CP found a way for a while to win, which wasn't playing a very exciting brand of football. We needed wins and it worked, so who can blame him. I think unfortunately that isn't working quite as well now, with a few odd exceptions like Leicester. Players with a bit of flair haven't really been given a fair crack when you compare to say Wilson who started poorly but then found his feet. Green may well have done the same but with the added bonus of adding some service into the box which we are desperately missing.
  • I cant believe the panic on CL since Saturday. Talk of replacing SCP is pathetic. Look at the table , we aren't in any imminent danger and even if we were , bringing in someone new would be a massive mistake.
  • assuming we survive relegation what will the summer bring, perhaps that is a more weighty question

A team with 50 points will be relegated this season, I'm sure.

A point a game for safety.

  • Come to think of it, have we been in the relegation places at any point this season?

Not bad for a newly promoted team with hardly any investment I'd say....

Still not good enough for many here it seems though.
  • Two away wins this week and there will be talk about the playoffs.
  • Really? One of the bottom 3 will have more than 50 points? Currently Peterboro have 36 with 12 games left, so they would need to win 4 draw 2 of their last 12. Seems unlikely. Plus there are 6 teams between us and them. So not only would Peterboro have to go on a pretty unprecedented run of form (and they are the very epitome of inconsistant), 6 others would all have to have better form than us between now and the end of the season.

Both of those sound unlikely to me. I can see the team finishing in 22nd getting 48 points at most, and I predict we'll get around 54.

I should know better than to come on here after a lose, it all goes very tabloid. When we win we're world beaters, and when we lose we're hopelessly doomed. It seems we get the press we deserve in the country, sensationalist and reactionary.
  • Is Paul May hacking people's user names?
  • Is Powell the solution or the problem?
If the owners consider Powell the problem then he will go, if they consider the players to be the problem, then provided we escape the drop then I hope Powell stays is furnished with a transfer pot (from somewhere) and replaces 80% of the current squad.

FWIW I really dont know if Powell is totally responsible, what I do know is that the crowds will not be flocking to The Valley because of the third rate hoofball we are playing under Powell.
The season ticket early renewals will be a big indicator to the owners and may persuade them either way!
  • I dont want Powell sacked, but if the owners did sack him i'm hoping they have something lined up.

    Dont want a Dowie-Reed-Pardew-Parky situation.
  • Couldn't agree more Greenie for the first time in years I am pondering my season ticket renewal. Strange thing is when we went down to League 1 I didn't think twice about renewing but this time at this moment I cannot face watching that dross week in week out.

After last season this one (at home at least) has been very disappointing from a football quality perspective

They'll sack SCP on April 9th.

    Dennis Wise in.

    You read it here first.

Hope to God I'm being paranoid!

    Nothing has changed!

The fact is that there is no way we will get anyone better than CP in the near future and we could do a hell of a lot worse. He has the squad achieving at or close to its maximum potential and no money to spend. I think the board have enough sense not to do anything stupid.

they might be if we knew what the prices would be afterwards.

80% of the current squad would have been considered worthy of a statue outside Bartram's not 6 months ago.

    I despair, I really do.

The only thing I'm depressed about at the moment is the massive over-reaction of the fans. We've had a bad run, fair enough. But we are comfortably mid-table with a primarily League 1 squad - I don't think we will go down this year, and so many of the people now panicking would have taken a mid-table finish at the start of the season.

Can't help but think that if our home and away forms were reversed, there would be a totally different feel about the place. Other teams know this and take advantage. They come to disrupt our play, knowing full well that if we're not at least 2 goals up inside 25 mins the fans will get restless. And that DOES make a difference. I've heard it straight from the horse's mouth (so to speak) at the Player of the Year Dinner. Also saw it working in our favour at Leicester when their fans did exactly the same.

We (the fans) need to get a grip. I'm not saying that our bad run is the fan's fault, but it IS a contributing factor, whether people care to see it or not. Finally, to the first person that says 'I've paid my money so I've got the right to grumble', I'll give you £20 if I can come to your workplace and shout abuse at you for 2 hours.

    OK, rant over...

April 8th is the deadline for early discounted renewal of season tickets.

Please post more often mate. You are 100% spot on with that.
  • Its chuff like this that sometimes turns me off this site

At no stage whatsoever have the board given any inclination that Powell will be fired, despite people with agendas stirring it up.

I expected better of you Len
  • I think we're in a better position than people give us credit for. 1 or 2 wins and we're straight back into midtable.

Crunch time will come in the summer. Will they spend money? Will they find a buyer? Or will we have to finance ourselves with sales to our key players (Solly)?

Surely you saying we have primarily a league one squad also means you think we should replace most of them?
  • The only decision the board need to make is how much money to give powelly next season

If none let him go he deserves better opportunity to push on

If some give it him early

If lots give it him earlier any talk of letting him go is ridiculous

The squad is desperately thin the peobl had not just been SCP and any errors made it is a combination of mistakes, poor decisions by players of limitation

Poor mgmt from board on where this years budget should be spent and where budgets were cut

Sack Powell they may as well sack themselves as its fruitless if you don't support your mgr financially

I don't want him sacked, as anyone who reads my posts regularly should realise, but those "in the know" have suggested more than once that he is not TJ's favourite person.

If they sack him before April 8th people like me wouldn't renew fullstop.

After April 8th they could use the excuse of poor season ticket take up because of poor results.

Not at all what I want I stress once more but, as you say yourself, there are a lot of "agendas."

Rubbish. I was merely pointing out where they have come from. Every single one of them has earned the right to prove themselves in the Championship. Some will make it, others won't - that's football. But suggesting that we should basically clear out the squad that won the league last year because we're 'only' mid-table in the league above is ridiculous.
  • Much speculation on here and elsewhere as to whether CP is regarded with the same esteem by TJ as he is by the fans. If we are to believe what has been said then CP is far from secure. I can't see him being fired this season unless we lose the next four and even then what would be the point with only seven games remaining for any new man to impose himself. Having said that losing the next four could be the excuse needed for TJ to pull the trigger if he genuinely doesn't rate CP. Assuming we retain our Championship status then as razil says it might well be the summer that changes are made. I now firmly believe that the board don't see Powell as the man to take us forward and spend their money. I hope to god that I am wrong but my gut feeling is that we will have a new manager to start next season. 100% support from me but I doubt the same from TJ.
