  • Behind the man 110%.

Some people need a bit of perspective, Chris has done a fantastic job.
  • Brilliant work, Stig. Really interesting, and actually reassuring. I get depressed reading some comments on here, but this shows us how unrepresentative they are.

Thanks Prague. I guess it demonstrates that the (easily) disappointed are more vociferous.

  • If we lose SCP:
    1. Someone else will snap him up before you can say "what the f...?"
    2. There will be a Nigel Adkins Mark 2 moment across that part of the football world that notices
    3. There will be a fall in season ticket sales (this is likely any way)
    4. The momentum of the last two years will be adversely affected
  • Change the banner to 97.6% support

From these respondents we got the following suggestions for alternative managers. I have ignored responses justifying previous answers, answers explaining why no-one is available and obviously joke suggestions.

    Jamie Redknapp 1
    Paul Hart 1
    Nigel Adkins 8
    Paolo DiCanio 8
Ron Atkinson with Paolo DiCanio 1
    Curbs 2
    Jean Franco Zola 1
    Martin Allen 1
    Dean Smith 1
    Ian Holloway 1

But you left a couple in for a laugh yeah?
    Thats what I was thinking??
  • Jean Franco Zola?

    Is that his sister?
  • If we take 'critical support' as 80%, and 'limited support' as 30% leaving the other two at 100% and 0%, an average of the above results gives us support for Chris Powell at 86.32%.

Any chance we could change the banner to reflect a more accurate picture of the community as a whole?
  • Can't think of anyone else I want as manager. Interesting that a number of supporters wanted Curbs out because "he had takne the club as far as he could" because exactly the same thing is happening at Stoke at the moment with banners being unfurled saying "Pullis out" now don't get me wrong I don't like that man very much and he has had a lot of backing from the owners with transfer money far more than Curbs ever had but he has done a great job for a club that in terms of our Football is about the same size as Charlton. Maybe their supporters should look at what happened to us and be more careful what they wish for.
  • That list of potential replacement managers is hilarious

    except for Adkins

This season was always going to be trial and error, consolidation.
With the lack of quality signings, it was never really going to be any different.

to play devil's advocate. Were we not told that the purchases the previous summer were of a quality good enough to play in the Championship? I'd contend that many of them are not. Is that because CP underestimated their ability or underestimated the strength of the Championship?

Or it was rubbish made up to explain away why we could afford to change our entire squad but not force up prices when we had some money to spend, in the eyes of other clubs.

Yes, but told that by whom?

I don't remember Chris saying he didn't want to improve his squad the summer just gone.

  • Amazed at the suggestions for Di Canio. Yeah, lets bring in a manager who quits as soon as it gets a bit tough. Chirs Powell 100% for me.
  • Didn't Slater say earlier in the season that everyone at CAFC was surprised by the quality of the division?

I agree with you that some individuals seem a bit out of depth but don't forget on the whole and not just the home games we are 7 points clear of the drop zone and haven't been near it for several months.

There are lies, opinions and stats and as it stands this squad as a whole won the league last year and are on course for a mid table finish.

The way I see it he's done a great job and despite the football not being great.
  • If there was money available I'm sure they would have spent it in the window to improve our chances of finishing top half and build for next season. The only surprise is that anyone can beat anyone and that virtually every CAFC game has had just one goal in it. The players we have are good enough to finish 14th but the question is what is needed to push the club onto the top 6. And what can be afforded?
By not providing finances to support Powell in continuous improvement at every window the club is ensuring that we will not make it into the top half and slowing our return to the Premier League. Which is a tad ironic given the money on offer there!
  • 34 league managers have already been sacked this season and i'm sure many of them would have been out of relagation positions. If we think as fans we are all critical of our managers, we only have to look at our clubs owners to see that success means more to them than to us. To us failure on the pitch is stressful and frustrating. To owners it can mean the loss of millions of pounds.

As said already our owners are not willing/able to put any more money in at this stage and maybe they want to see whether CP can manage on the current budget. These players are able to compete at this level, if not, then we would/could be bottom!

  • I think the players brought in during the of summer 2011 were acquired because they were viewed as having the potential to play at Championship level. Not many we're gambles at League One level but on the other hand would be a gamble a division higher. How could anyone possibly know. By way of example I thought Hollands would be perfectly comfortable but his lack of mobility has been cruelly exposed. A mid table ish finish this season would be fantastic but without considerable investment in the team this coming summer I fear that we will be going into reverse once more. What's the saying ? If you stand still you are going backwards.

(Not speaking as CAS Trust here, nor with any ITK knowledge)

    Speculatively and hopefully objectively

We could be on plan B = get out with as much profit from our investment so asking price is as much as possible in excess of the investment to date because no more cash to invest for whatever reason, which explains the relatively low levels of investment when in touching distance of the Prem. What worries me is if they can't get that what then? I can't believe that our owners would have this as the strategy in the first place, putting not enough in to the project would make it not worth doing.

Go another season and that margin will be significantly reduced

If we are still on plan A = reach the prem by end of season 3.5 or whatever, this season has told us there will need to be investment in the summer or a Manager who can do it with current resources. To do it on Freebies would be a monster gamble.

But the extra money from the Champs/STs will have kicked in fully by then, maybe find some extra cash somewhere, so praps..?
  • It's a puzzle that's for sure.

  • always has been and always will be 100% Support for SCP

  • Now we've got a win i'm 110%. :-0

Just hope people don't go over the top win , lose or draw against Millwall , we live in hope....
  • I support SCP 100 % I trust SCP 100%

The banner should be bigger and should be mail shotted to every single Cafc board member everyday

The signings made last season and those that were added to this are of championship quality because although it's being a tough tough season right now unless I am mistaken we are in the championship we are bang In the middle of it

So not only were his signings astute and thought out those that don't fit go out straight away as not to rock the boat

His loanees are signed on the proviso that you perform or you go and you go at the earliest point

How anyone can question his signings his mgmt of the players is beyond me

He has earned the right to make mistakes he trusts his players as much as his judgement

And if he gets it wrong so what when we stay up this season all of the people who doubt him look at it objectively if you can and be honest

We invested heavy last season won the league at a canter

We added players not all of whom were first choice and I believe genuinely we will stay up by Atleast 10 points from the 3rd bottom team

And that is progress look where we were this time 2 or 3 seasons ago

We made this progress with SCP at the helm and I fucking love that fact
  • Powell and Dyer have my full support, as they have all last season and this. I cannot understand the moaners. They moaned about Curbishley and look what happened. Powell isn't a deity. He's doing his best with what he has. And what he has is doing okay, thank you. Other clubs would eagerly offer Chris Powell a managerial contract if they could. Long may he stay at Charlton, and do well.
  • Brilliant post, nla !

Making me shed a few tears as I read this on arriving home from Yorkshire.

The rearguard action from the lads today epitomised all that SCP stands for - guts, honest endeavour, bravery and pride in our Club.

    100 % ?

A question that should never be asked .

    100% Charlton !
