Lawrie Wilson

Afternoon

Boro Fan here. How has our old boy Lawrie Wilson settled in? Has he made the step up to the Championship?
Was a good player for us and is missed.
On another note, pleased to see Chris Powell doing well. Such a likeable bloke

  • He looked a little nervous in his first few games for us but is now one of the first names on the teamsheet.
  • He's an engine on the right hand side.
All is good apart from his hair and tattoo.

I thought we were having a 'Lawrie Wilson Day' on Saturday with hair & tatoos to boot?

Forgot to say , top top player by the way , my missus really likes him , although i hope its for his football ability rather than his wayward hair. :-0
  • Welcome Wharfside,

hadn't realised he'd spent time up there. Lawrie's settled down really well now and struck up a fine understanding with our rb Solly after a few eyebrows were raised when Powell brought him back. Fast becoming a favourite with his whole-hearted, energetic displays, as he was at Stevenage.

Nice having a playing legend doing well at the helm isn't it? Do you feel you've got a realistic chance of automatic promotion? You looked well drilled and patient at our place - good away performance.
  • How's our old boy Robin Lawrence getting on?
  • Paddy,

when he says Boro fan, i think he means Stevenage Borough

    Stevenage not Mbro mate.

Haha i dont think he's a Middlesbrough fan.
  • Oops - it was the wharf thing that sent me down that road!
  • Paddy7, don't feel bad - I immediately thought of Middles, when he said Boro.

  • He seems to have settled in, very very shakey though up until Blackpool away
  • Just glad I didn't say anything rude about Stevenage! Incidentally he was a big part of their win against us last season.

Ha ha sorry mate, Stevenage Borough (None of this Stevange FC rubbish).
Pleased to hear he is doing well. I for one thought he would make the grade at that level. As much as the money has enabled us to revamp the squad, our right side isn't what it used to be. Granted that was because we have lost a great right back too on Ronnie Henry.
In answer to our chances on promotion, I can't decide. We are organized but am concerned that we lack the fire power up top that is required to push us over the line. It will be fun seeing if we do or not. Best of luck for the season. I really enjoyed the games with Charlton last year, even the hiding we got at your place. Great day out.

Wilson is becoming one of my favourite players. At first I doubted him, but hes looking really good. Gives everything for the shirt, great energy.

Wharfside is Luke Freeman still with you? Thought he looked really good at our place, how's he fairing?

    I don't think he's a middlesborough fan pal
  • Wilson's quite a unique player. Doesn't really seem to be a specialist in any position, but has the engine to make it work wherever SCP puts him in the side. Doing a very good job at the moment.

Luke is still with is yeah but has really gone off the boil. He was fantastic last year but doesn't seem as interested this season. I don't think he seems as fit as he was under Westley. Doesn't look a goal threat at all which is the most disappointing thing. Clearly still has a lot of talent though but he needs to do more

  • Wilson initially was played at RB, where he struggled, but in his proper position at RM he's been very good, full of energy

We've seen that he can do a job at RB - but he's got 'Midfielder' stamped right through him.
Agree, that's where we get the best from him.

  • Was not really given much of a chance by quite a number whilst playing right back but Powell ignored them and played him in his preferred position. Sometimes we judge too quickly. Fortunately Wilson got on with the job and is now on par with solly as a fans favourite.

Assume this is a joke? I started the original Wilson thread defending him when getting pelters, but no way is he as popular as Solly. Only question was why did Powell for so long insist his natural position was RB when the previous season he was the best RM in league 1?

I don't think Powell was 'insisting' that he was a RB - but that was the job that he was originally brought in to do as we had no back up for Solly and we had two natural right wingers in Green and Wagstaff.

He was an odd purchase, if the intention was to get cover at RB, because is isn't a RB, but rather an midfielder, who impressed going forward last season. Most midfielders can cover at full back, it doesn't mean that they'll be particularly good there though.
  • As has been said he was a big thorn in our side when Boro beat us up there last season. I thought he was a good signing from the off but some people don't like to give new players time to settle. We have had a string of indifferent debuts!

Anyway, wharf, are you on a cut if we ever flog him at a profit?
  • Fast becoming a Charlton favourite ... he's heart is in the club ! You can't ask anymore from a player...
  • Lawrie Wilson - Future captain, Legend, Leader :D

When I first saw him I wasn't impressed. Very happy to be proved wrong. He has made right mid his own position. Massive fan of him now.

I'm just happy that we don't have to have the endless Green v Wagstaff debates anymore.

No odder than getting in on loan a centre half who occasionally plays left back to play left back.

Exactly, Wilson is more than a midfielder who can cover full back, he is comfortable and experienced. I agree he is better RM but he can do a good job RB now he's settled. Wasn't an odd purchase at all
