ANTHONY Wordsworth looks increasingly likely to have played his last game for Colchester United, although the Essex club have still not received a formal bid for their talented midfielder.
Neighbours Ipswich Town are leading the chase to snap up the creatively-minded Wordsworth, whose current contract with the U’s expires this summer.
A number of other Championship clubs have also been linked with Wordsworth in recent weeks, including Charlton Athletic, Peterborough, Leicester and Middlesbrough.
However, U’s chairman and owner Robbie Cowling revealed today: “There’s nothing to report yet.
“Other clubs do seem to be interested in Anthony (Wordsworth), but as yet I have received no concrete offers.”
Wordsworth is currently serving a two-match suspension, for accruing 10 bookings, which caused him to miss yesterday’s 2-1 home defeat to Scunthorpe United, which condemned the U’s to the relegation zone.
The 24-year-old will also have to sit out next weekend’s trip to bottom club Hartlepool United, although by then he could already have moved on to a Championship club.
The fact that the U’s risk losing Wordsworth on a free transfer this summer will probably see him leave during this month’s transfer window, possibly for a fee of around £200,000.
And at the moment, Ipswich look to be in the box seat, especially as Charlton boss Chris Powell, who was previously linked with Wordsworth, recently confirmed that he had no immediate plans to signs the Colchester maestro.
Perhaps what we want and what we can afford is affected by needing to be sure that some players are sold first. If TJ is playing Hold 'Em again, then we will have to hope that his game has improved since his last botched attempts.

What botched attempts are they?
I am assuming a reference to the protracted Stephens saga where (apparently) Slater tried to play hardball over upfront vs clauses and a supposedly done deal never got done, and CP missed out on funds. How true this is I don't know.

But if the offer from Villa was a joke surely he did the right thing to try and get the right price?
none of us think Stephens is worth 2.5m but that is what TJ was holding out for and thought, seeing as it was deadline day, that Villa would pay it. CP was happy to take the offer made and had two replacements lined-up and ready to go. TJ holding out scuppered CP's plans.
I have a feeling that the Poet (Wordy) will be another D Green .. highly rated at his present club, but not quite as good as a lot of CLifers think he is
Sky Sports understands Ipswich are leading the race to sign Colchester midfielder Anthony Wordsworth.
Wordsworth's future at Colchester has been the subject of speculation with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Charlton have been credited with an interest in Wordsworth, but Ipswich are thought to be favourites to land the highly-rated 24-year-old.
Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy is keen to bring in a new winger as he looks to add to his attacking options and Wordsworth is thought to be his top target.
Wordsworth, who is currently serving a two-game ban, is thought to be interested in a move to Portman Road and he is weighing up his future at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Where do you get this invaluable information. I think Stephens is worth £2.5. Good luck to TJ for holding our for more money!
Feel a bit for TJ here. I'm sure there would have been plenty of moaning if Stephens had gone for a small up-front fee and add ons based on Villa making Europe, Stephens establishing himself in their first team and notching up appearances or Martians landing in Birmingham.
Given where we are right now, I'm with TJ; we want decent money up front for our better players so that we can find decent replacements; if we can't pretty much immediately improve the squad with what we're offered then no deal. I don't know how much truth there is in all of this or all of the other stuff that's been talked about on here but on this one, if it's true, then I think TJ made a decent call.
And we ripped off arsenal for that cocky jenkinson.
Signed a new long term deal and capped by england. If they sold him tomorrow they'd no doubt make a huge profit on him.
Incidentally how good is this Wordsworth guy? Currently playing for a relegation threatened league one side on the worst run in their history.
Guy next to me at work is a Colchester fan and when I said that there was interest for Wordsworth he was surprised. Said he was okay but never saw anything special from him. Described him as Carrick-like (not Carrick quality).
Time and again though, Yann wasn't anything special at Leicester, Morrison was crud at Wendies and Djimi Traore won a Champions League medal with Liverpool!

And remember, Jenks was out of contract at Charlton. Therefore no transfer fee was payable..
What we received was a development fee as he was under 24. And £1.2 million was pretty generous as far as those kind of payments go.
Jonjo was under contract at Charlton when Liverpool signed him, so a transfer fee was paid. Stephens is also under contract.
When Jonjo was sold, we were up the creek financially, Liverpool pretty much had us by the dangly bits when it came to negotiating prices. Stephens on the other hand, we may not be rolling in cash but neither are we in particular financial peril as far as can be seen.
I was trying to make the distinction that Jenks was out of contract and we couldn't ask a transfer fee - and that we did well to get as much as we did just for a development fee.
Either way when you look at the ridiculous fees other young prospects playing in the lower leagues such as Fabian Delph(8m), Victor Moses(£4m) and Nick Powell (£6m) have gone for I reckon we got a pretty poor deal on both Shelvey and Jenks.

Widely regarded as a bloody good player and superb prospect
Done them up like a kipper

Also, he might have then stayed another year or so, established himself in the 1st team, and could have been sold for
£2m or £3m.
Like the young Sheff Utd fullback sold for £3m last summer.
