Charlton Ath v Cardiff City | 6 November 2012 | Preview, Views, News and Line Ups

edited November 2012 in General Charlton
Introduction

When you are on a bad run and without a home win since August the last team you want to see arrive at the Valley are the league leaders. With the feel good factor from last season long gone the players and manager have something to prove, to themselves if no one else. We are not relegated as there is a long way to go yet but we are in a relegation battle. How the players and management react to that fact and the defeat v Middlesboro' will be key

The Opposition

Cardiff will be wearing their away colours of blue shirts and white shorts which will please traditionalists at least. Still top despite losing away at Bolton on Saturday the Bluebirds Red Dragons sit top with 28 points. One straw for Charlton to cling to is that 21 of those points have come from the Welsh side's seven home games. On the road they have fared less well with "only" 2 wins and 1 draw from seven games. Even our away form is better!

Goals have not been a problem for City with Helguson and Whittingham both on form. As seems obligatory there is an former Addick playing for the opposition, in this case AFKA Bartram's hero Mark Hudson.

The Line Up

Who knows? Powell certainly surprised most of us v Boro by playing Kerker at the LB. The young French-Algerian certainly didn't embarrass himself considering it appears to have been his first game in such a position.

Not that it lasted too long. At 1 - 2 CP switched to 3 - 5 - 2 which saw Kerker and Solly getting forward to some affect but another defensive error made it 1 - 3 and the Addicks switched again to 4 - 3 - 3. Great tactical fluency and good to see a plan B and C when it works or pointless tinkering when it doesn't. Either way you can play any formation you like but if your normally reliable defenders gift goals then you are going to lose.

The only formation we didn't see was one that has worked well away from home ie the 4-1-4-1. Some will complain that we have to be more adventurous in SE7 but we know what Curbs would have done. Shut up shop and stopped the slide. And CP is "Son of Curbs".

Whichever formation Powell wants to play will be limited by who he has available. Wilson walked off at half time and Cort seemed heavy legged 2nd half. The big centre half was subbed off but was it tactics or injury? Wiggins, Fuller and Kermo are still out and Wagstaff is out on loan, for now at least.

At Preview Towers we expect to see BWP miss out to allow Charlton to pack the midfield. Dervitte will continue in the middle if Cort is fit otherwise Hollands may return.

Hamer

Solly Morrison Dervite/Cort Kerker
Hollands/Dervite
Haynes Pritchard Stephens Jackson
Hulse

The Prediction

2 - 2

  • Fancy us to not lose this ...we're due some rub of the green

let's go crazy 2-1 to us

Can't see us scoring let alone winning. 3-0 Cardiff
  • we'll fight hard but will rue missed chances....again.

    1-3.
  • Pull your bloody finger out Charlton.

1-0 og by that useless idiot Hudson.

  • 3 nil the ex blue birds
  • Won't get tonked, will loose. Routine 0-2 and a caretaker manager in for Bristol City (not saying its right, but think a defeat will see TJ pull the trigger.
  • This Tuesday can go either way. Powell needs to decide on a policy. Play like we do away with five packed midfielders, rely on the breakaway and give ourselves a chance, or try and match Cardiff blow for blow and skill for skill and get stuffed. A lot will depend on who's fit. I'm going for a low scoring draw
  • 3-0 Red birds
  • Heaviest defeat in living memory 0-7

  • 0-3. Hope I'm proved wrong
  • I can't decide what to think about Cardiff coming to town three days after Boro wandered away with three comfortable points. Maybe, a solid performance would suffice and if that brings points so much the better. Overreaction looks the most likely outcome to me, I guess.
  • until fuller comes back, i can't see who is going to score a goal so i'll go 0-0
  • We're not that bad. 0 - 1
  • Our guys won't get stuffed again, so soon. One thing they have got it guts, and I think/hope they will grind out at least a draw. 1-1 for me.
  • with a 4 2 4 , our midfields were outnumbered with boro playing with 3 MF, better come back to a 4 1 4 1 which proved to be more solid defensively .
  • I think that we are lacking in the skills department for this league, particularly with the players that are out, but we proved last year and in recent away matches that we had grit and determination. If CP can get them organised and we do not concede an early goal I think we will keep it tight and it will end up 0-0 or a slim defeat. This is not a game to go out for a win but to hold fast and nick a point. CP needs to hold his nerve and make things happen with his players.
  • as we wont have a natural left back why not give jordan cousins a run out we gave konchesky his debut at 16.palace produce good young players and give them a chance we have got them but they dont get a chance.i would rather see someone like poyet given a chance rather than pritchard or hollands.

    Charlton 1-2 Cardiff City

    Fuller, Helugson, Hudson
  • Bright early start for the addicks but not getting the goal they deserve, Frustration and long ball sets in which ends up in a comfortable 2-0 win to Cardiff.

  • Just to upset EVERYONE, CP puts Solly in goal and Hamer up front as a lone striker.

Be happy to see us draw this one, especially after Saturday, so 2-2.
  • Cardiff 4-0 55/1
    Cardiff 5-0 175/1

    Either of those tbh
  • from watching the Bolton game it looks like Cardiff's best attacks came down their right through Noone. So we need a good defence on our left, that means Solly on the left but then who goes on the right?
Maybe it is time for Cousins to get his chance on the left and leave Solly on the right.

    1-1
  • Taylor, Stephens, Hollands and Green in
    Cort, Wilson, Dervite, BWP out
1-1 draw, BWP to come off the bench and score the equaliser

    Really hope Stephens doesn't start.
And now I've said that, I predict he'll score the winner. 1-0 Charlton
  • We ain't got two central midfielders capable of competing 2v2, so we'll have to play 3 in there. We can't leave the full back areas exposed, especially if we have a makeshift left back, so we'll have to play two wide players. So it's 4-1-4-1 or 4-5-1 then.

As at Wolves in the second half, we will need to attack along the flanks to create chances, with both full backs getting in behind.

It worked at Molyneux, so why not at home against the league leaders?

The manager has a huge decision to make. Do we play 4-4-2 and go for the three points, risking another home defeat, or do we play a defensive formation, make ourselves difficult to beat and try to nick a result?

Rather than play Jordan Cousins out of position, why not try Morgan Fox, decent left-footed left back...

  • Crowd could play a big part in this game. If Cardiff score in the 1st 15 minutes I can see a real hammering & the crowd will start to get on the players backs which will only make things worse. If we don't concede in the 1st half we might just sneak a win. 1st 15 minutes is crucial!
  • Have a feeling we may grab 3 points and even if we do lose I can't see powell being sacked . My prediction , 2-1 us , Hulse and Haynes
