this the exact kind of thinking I hope the videos I posted negate, I hate the part of hip hop music I listen to gets generalised like this when the style I listen to has no references to this stuff
Both overrated, overhyped shit. Real rap is JMT, Jeru, Cannibal Ox, Nas, Company Flow, Black Sheep, Public Enemy, Beasties, Black Moon, Pharcyde, Ice Cube, Mobb Deep, Mos Def etc. That Hype Williams/Ja Rule/Notorious BIG/Tupac/P-Diddy/Jay-Z shit is embarrassing - it's like comparing Depeche Mode with Boyzone.

BIG or 2Pak ? Personally don't think this is a viable question as the answer is clear. But I am interested to see people's opinions as its a question that sparks a big debate every time. And for those of you that 'don't listen to that hipidy hop stuff' I understand and respect your decision to have poor taste.
That's the sort of hip-hop I'm into. Del, A Tribe Called Quest, Blackstar, Wu-Tang, Nas, Talib Kweli, Slick Rick, Mos Def etc, the classic stuff. It's not always about guns, bitches and bling. Anyone who's happy to discredit it as a genre without properly listening to it should listen to some Tribe stuff, it's so uplifting and good. Most modern rap stuff is dreadful, doesn't have much in common with classic hip-hop. It's a shame that people hear 50 Cent or Jay-Z or someone like that and discredit what used to be a brilliant genre of music.

Amen to that my brother from another mother @redredrobin But I am two months off 40 so they were the artists of my younger days. I'm not stuck in a timewarp but late 80s early 90s hip-hop will never be bettered.
Cheers for posting those vids Twiggy. I listened, and I tried to listen with an open mind, though I suspect you might not think that when you see my comments. You're right these particular vids do manage to stand up against Vallet Gary's criticism, but I still don't rate them (I guess I'm not supposed to though). For me they completely fail to overcome raps two biggest problems; that terrible affected LA-gangsta accent leading every rapper to sound pretty much the same (credit to Rapsody - that was different). It's just as inane as the fake voice that every party DJ thinks they have to put on. The second is that making every rhyme to an A A A A A format is just so stultifyingly dull. Perhaps one day it will evolve into something interesting. On this evidence it hasn't yet. For what it's worth, here's what I thought of them, figures in brackets are how far I got before it had to end.
The Vent (2.34) - The best of a bad bunch. I got the feeling that I was supposed to be sad because that blokes brother was dead, but in reality I was just bored. Rapsody (0.40) - Well the girl in the video looked happy, so I suppose I should be pleased that even in Soweto there's something to live for, but this just sounded like some bland old chart music like you can hear anywhere. Skyzoo (0.47) - It might have been brilliant, but I couldn't understand a word that bloke was mumbling. Little Brother (0.42) - The worst of a bad bunch. Pity the vocals didn't go with the music.
If these are better than Big or Two Pack, I'm glad I don't know what they sound like. As much as I hate Perry Como, even he's sounding like a good option after that.

Biggie just edges it for me, although by the time these two had appeared i had lost interest in hip hop, fed up with all the gangster rap rubbish that was about. Years later Anticon and Def Jux got me back into it.

Did anyone see London on Film? The first one had some really early UK rappers. Fair play to them for being pioneers. Nothing has changed from my point of view.
I have to admit that I do like a lot of modern hip-hop artists....Drake, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Wale, Frank Ocean (although he could be considered more r'n'b than hip hop). I don't think you can compare them all to the old skool as they have totally different styles, but they aren't always rapping about money and women, like 50 Cent, Eminem etc. People like Jay-Z, Nas and Joe Budden are also favourites of mine and are mainstream, but, again, are not in the same camp as 50 Cent, Eminem etc. Jay-Z has been around for years, and his earlier stuff has a quite old skool vibe about it.
But you will never take me away from listening to Gang Starr, The Roots, The Pharcyde, Mobb Deep etc. And don't forget some of the UK rappers- Roots Manuva, Skinnyman, Klashnekoff.
Hip hop, like all music, has evolved. If you stick listening to one type of music life can get boring. Yes, there are a lot of mainstream artists making the whole hip hop scene look bad, but if you look in the right places you will find some gems. And even some mainstream artists may have some songs that you may like, even if you don't like most of their stuff.
Certainly if your looking for more actually 'hip hop' then nowadays the uk is the way to go. ( roots manuva, Kalashnikof, lowkey, kyza,) just to name a few. Is a shame though that hip hop is compared to a lot of poor 'popular music nowadays as it is one of the greatest genres that is dieing a slow death.
I think the husky voice of Tupac and his obvious sympathies for the people make him the winner here. Biggie changed rap forever with the possible exception of Eminem. Biggie and Tupac made 94-97 the golden era for hip hop. Biggie made today's rappers look weak with their Uncle Tom styles. Biggie could rap pure which makes him one of the all time greats. All that said, it was the flow of Tupac that made him great. He was raised in a political family and was close to the Panthers growing up, so he loved truth and was taught to be true. Tupac was more than a rapper, he was a poet, an activist and a revoloutionary. He wa raps Jiminez Hendrix and his death means that he is even seen as a martyr in some circles. So, who is the best , Eminem without a doubt....
Yeah good point. Too much reliant on Dr Dre on Slim Shady and way too many overdubs on the Eminem Show.Relapse was crap, and don't get e started on Recovery.
