I predicted he'd be the new Simon francis and was right. I predicted he'd be a good acquisition and was right. I also said he's a decent box to box midfielder and holding midfielder.........

It is impossible for him to be both of the first two things. The two are mutually exclusive
I thought he looked ok in his first couple of games. I didn't think that he looked out of place, just like he was adapting to new team mates.
I, completely, understook why he came in when Wiggins was injured. Solly had played at left back in the past, and Wilson reportedly cost close to £500k, Evina was signed on a free after a season at Oldham and some appearences in the Arsenal reserves.
I think Wilson was signed in anticipation of Solling moving for a large fee this summer. Wiggins injury had, ironically, allowed us to play them both. I.e. Wilson has managed to show what he can do at right back without Solly having to be 'rested'.
I think it poses a dilema now though. Wiggins will be expected to come back into the side as soon as he is fit enough, but I can see Powell wanting to keep Wilson in the team. Maybe he will move to play on the right had side of midfield is Green fails to play like he has in the last couple of games.
It is a nice dilema to have though.
really?? Was you at the Orient game?
Yes I was at the Orient game. I thought he was ok that night. Clearly he has looked better since then, but he was by no means terrible.
I don't, honestly, know what you expect from players we sign.
If he'd cost £20m, won three Premier League titles and a Champions League or two then fair enough, but he was signed from a third division side. What did you really expect from his debut?
He's had a few below average games and a few above average games. I hope he continues to grow into his role but it's too early to declare him as a transfer master stroke, just like it was too early to write him off.
All this 'told you so, told you so' stuff does is alienate anyone who did feel it was appropriate to slag him off and makes them more likely to shout up when he has a poor one and look for reasons to criticise so they can save a bit of face.
Frankly, calling them all out is a) a bit premature and b) self defeating.

This.
I'll hold my hands up - I thought he was bloody awful. I was prepared to give him a chance after the Orient game, but against Palace when he came on he wasn't much better; but I was prepared (once again) to give him the benefit of the doubt because it wasn't a planned change. It was only the last couple of games that he has really put a shift in and I've thought he has come on leaps and bounds. When I saw he had twitter I even went as far as giving him a congratulations after one game and saying I thought he played really well; as I would do with Hamer, Solly, Jackson etc after a good game.
Would I say it was appropriate to say I felt he was awful? Yes. Given the performances I saw, I think I was well within my rights to say 'I'm not too confident on this one, I think he could be quite dangerous having him where we would usually have Solly.'. Just as others were well within their rights to say 'Actually, this one isn't too bad - just give him a chance. I see something good here.' - they're called opinions, everyone's is different, and if they weren't then we would live in a very dull and boring place. He's put the shirt on and he's a Charlton player, just like any other. I'm prepared to say BWP has a poor first touch at times, I've said Hamer has made mistakes, I've said JJ has been a bit slow... Why should it be different for Wilson? As with any other player - that's one match, it's done; lets crack on with the next and see what they're like then.
Just like you claim people were wrong to criticise him after 4 bad games (estimate), you're doing the same after an equal amount of good games. If that's not premature (and bordering on hypocritical) then I don't know what is! To make it sound like people are hoping he is utter shit, just to have something to moan about or be proved right about, is just idiotic. Why on earth would anyone support a football team then hope for shit players? No one is doing that, and I dare say anyone who criticised Wilson (like myself) will only be too happy to put their hands up and say 'My bad, that guy played a really good one today!'.
The question is, if Wilson didn't improve - would the booers have started a thread saying "All you that said he would get better, hah - look at him now - he's still shit!"? I doubt it. This thread is just petty one-upmanship, simples.

I don't think anyone's really saying 'i told you so' because they said all along he was absolutely fantastic, more that it was unfair to decide he was shit after two games, witch it was... if that genuinely leads to people wanting to "criticise so they can save a bit of face", then I'd suggest that's their problem.
Their own silly, ridiculous, sad little problem.
I remember once coming out of the valley and over hearing someone boldly declare "I've seen that Euell three times now, and he's the worst striker I've ever seen". I appreciate that's not massively relevant, but I'm always reminded of it every time one of our players get's unfairly treated, which Wilson has.
No wonder your Mr Happy, what with being right all the time. I can understand the petty shit on politics threads etc but it now seems we can't have a decent football debate on here anymore.
Ignore Gary, keep saying it how you see it fella. I copped some flack after Tuesday for saying it was just one of those nights, yet we go away and win at a top club a few days later.
I also thought Wiggins was very average after his first couple of games.
Like me, I know you're one of the first to put your hands up when you call it wrong.
Our manager (in whom we have some faith) and his staff observe a potential signing, see something that makes them want to sign the player, persuade the Board to part with money and wages and yet some slag off the player before he's even sniffed the Ralgex down at Sparrows Lane, let alone pulled on the shirt.
Then when a player makes his debut, often thrown in, and he doesn't immediately make Messi look average, he is then made out complete sperm of the devil. Is it small wonder that some players struggle when they first get into the side.
Two of my favourite players over my time as a supporter were Peter Hunt, and John Robinson, both of whom had very inauspicious starts.
Some players just need time to settle.
Spot on Bing. I genuinely thought we'd never see Robinson again after the Chelsea 0-3 in the cup at Stamford Bridge. He was so poor that day - but following year he was like a different player. Think he found his niche switching to the left.
Anyway, Wilson looks promising to me. I think like a number of our players he's had some adjustment to make to playing at the higher level, in particular with wasteful punts forward surrendering possession - but like most footballers, he's got better with game time.

I agree with this, would you give Leon Clarke another chance then?
Threads like this are very tedious and one of the reasons I've been put off CL recently. Everyone has different opinions, some more valid than others. But imo it is good to have so many different points of view and equally it is good to see some challenging other's opinions. What I don't like is that people hint at things other posters may have written. Rather than just have a sly dig go back to the original thread and copy some of the comments if you want to pull people up on what they said, rather than the old "some on here ...".
Wilson may not have the finesse but he looks like he's got the engine and the b*ll*x. A 'solid citizen' as big Ron would have said and you need a good few of those sort of players over the course of a long season and i think that he, like Hollands, will become ever more important as the season goes on. They, like Morrison are the sort of players who very rarely get injuries unlike your Haynes, Green's and Wagstaff's who are always in and out with pulls, strains, colds and all the rest of it.
firstly i was not amongst those who felt he was a below budget signing .I saw him at the stevenage game last season and thought he was by far their outstanding player ,he is still young and can get better ...think he will become a real crowd favourite .....remember (with some mixed memories) our last Lawrie !
As someone who has been critical of Wilson i am probably in the catergory of someone who should be seen to be eating "humble pie". I'll admit he is good at going forward and in that respect he is getting better, i am just of the era who like defenders to tackle opponents. He still seems to hold back from tackles and prefers to try to force players wide. This is why i like Solly. He bombs forward, gets stuck in with the tackle and can force players out. Now i can't speak for the Blackpool game because i didn't go, but other than this i will stand by my previous comments.
Its possible that he would be better suited as a wide midfielder on the right as others have said with Solly at RB, although where does that leave Green and Wagstaff.
I guess the question is once Wiggins is fit are people going to ask for Wilson to stay in at RB or reinstate Wiggins and put Solly back at RB? Now Wiggins isn't known for his tackling prowess either at times, but he does block exceptionally well and his tackling ability improved a lot last season. Hopefully Wilson's will too which will make it hard for Wiggins to get back in.
I don't ever want any player who wears a Charlton shirt to fail just to prove a point. Regardless who goes out there i want Charlton to win.
I am cerainly not making Wilson a scapegoat for anything, win/lose/draw because to date i don't think he has done anything to warrant being branded as such. People are just fans of particular types of players. We can't all agree.
not interested in humble pie etc but what an excellent signing he is turning out to be - sounded like he played very well tonight & hopefully he can make that right midfield slot his own now

We have a lot of fans who with the geratest respect can't spot a good player and get on backs too quickly. Of course a new player needs a few games - but I knew enough about Wilson from what I saw of him last season - including the away game at Stevenage to see he was an excellent signing.
His versatility is a strength. Of course he isn't as good a defender as Solly - by my reckoning, you could say that about every other right back in the division. But he is very effective and for me is better offensively than Solly although I wouldn't say that is a weakness in Solly's game either.
Never doubted Wilson. Anyone who saw him against us last season knew he was a good player. Maybe some people on here shouldn't write players off after 20 minutes in future.
I don't think people have got at him, I just think some people know f### all about football. Someone gave him a 3 against Barnsley. I thought you had to be at the match to score it?
Does not bode well for Waggy though does it? Wilson and Green look to be the top choices for right midfield, Pritchard is able to deputise there also. Wouldn't be shocked if Wagstaff ends up moving on in January, but nor would I be overly disappointed if I'm honest.
I liked him from the start Just looked confiedent to take on his man not hoof it! And now seems to be getting better as well. Sorry im not a doomonger but i think hes going to be a great signing

Sounds to me that Powell has been fully aware that Wilson needed playing time to adapt.
