Looking at his match ratings, most think he's doing okay. Maybe it's humble pie time for the critics and those who like to abuse players without giving them a chance to settle?
Came into the team under difficult circumstances and is playing at a level he has never experienced before. Has had mixed performances but appears to have at least settled. My jury is still out as a right back but I can see he might offer something at right midfield. Is he any better there than Green or Waggy though ?
Will reserve my judgement til I see him up close and personal at Elland Road. Certainly not expecting to witness the liability some people have made him out to be.
Our manager (in whom we have some faith) and his staff observe a potential signing, see something that makes them want to sign the player, persuade the Board to part with money and wages and yet some slag off the player before he's even sniffed the Ralgex down at Sparrows Lane, let alone pulled on the shirt.
Then when a player makes his debut, often thrown in, and he doesn't immediately make Messi look average, he is then made out complete sperm of the devil. Is it small wonder that some players struggle when they first get into the side.
Two of my favourite players over my time as a supporter were Peter Hunt, and John Robinson, both of whom had very inauspicious starts.
He didn't have a great start for us, but was never as bad as some were making out.
Thought he looked great against both Blackburn and Watford.
Sadly, pathetically, some people would rather he was toss just so they can be right about something.
Not really. I was one of those that wasn't impressed by Wilson at all when I've seen him. I always gave my criticism with reason. Im glad he's startin to play well, and I hope it continues. Happy to be proven wrong if it's for the better of charlton.
In all honesty his first two games for us, i thought he was shocking. I will be the first to say that I thought he was a pretty awful and said so. That's not to say I wanted him to be toss or wanted a scapegoat. This is after all a forum to discuss players performances. To be fair his last couple of games he has been a real threat going forward and thought he was one of our best players against Blackburn. Good luck to him I hope he is a real success. For me however the jury is still out on his defensive capabilities. Let the shooting commence lol!

Should probably clarify that the "rather he was toss" comment wasn't aimed at anyone and everyone who has ever criticised him. Just a select few who absolutely love a scapegoat... most of whom seem to sit near me at the valley.
He was very good yesterday, especially at the defending part. I liked him when he played against us last season.
I did think we should have gone with Solly/Evina but on yesterday's performance I was wrong. Solly is unbelievable at left back for a right footed player. He just reads the game so well. A special talent.
If a player is not playing well, why should people have to pretend he's amazing?
Presumably he played well yesterday and it's not like people have a grudge against him or anything. I thought he has defended pretty poorly earlier in the season but if he plays like yesterday for the rest of the season then my opinion on him will change. I don't think he has even been made much of a scapegoat on here other than his stupid mistake against Palace. Jacko has had far more people doubting his ability at this level and clearly no one dislikes him.

You're bang on, Bing.
Another that comes to mind is Mark Aizlewood.
Slow to settle, the non-thinking supporter's scapegoat - but become the rock on which the team was built around, as he skippered Charlton into the top division.

Good post VG this is more or less my take on Wilson he was poor the first few games & I posted that he was, then u get accused of using him as a whipping boy. If a player has a blinder then say so if he has a stinker again we should feel free to mention it & not be accused of disloyal support. I also said I hope he improves, he has, his attacking play is excellent he still needs to work on his defensive positioning and decision making but he's getting there! Long may it continue!
Didn't have a great 1st game against Orient in the cup but he has certainly cemented his place in the team with ever improving performances. Thought he was man of the match against Watford taking on and beating defenders with quick feet. Going to be tricky for Powell, if Wilson and the team keeps playing well, when Wiggins gets back to fitness.
Let's get this into perspective. I wasn't one of those who have given him stick but I will admit to being underwhelmed and a bit concerned when we signed him. Why? I think there were three main reasons, two of them not really down to him:
1. Most of us were hopeful, back in May, June and early July that funds would be available to strengthen the starting 11 (not just the squad) to as far as possible assure our consolidation in this league and hopefully to push on towards a play off spot. By the time Lawrie was signed, that hope had been pretty much destroyed by the apparent financial difficulties at the club. I think there was understandable disappointment that he was likely to be the peak of our summer transfer activity.
2. At the time, rumours that Chris Solly was likely to be sold to West Ham were rife. Lawrie was seen as the replacement in waiting and got some of the backlash from the understandable alarm at selling one of our best players and the supporters player of the year. He was seen, probably rightly, as a step down from what we already had in Chris Solly.
3. Despite a good performance against Charlton last season, the feedback from Stevenage fans and CL posters who had seen more of him was that Lawrie had a major weakness - which was the quality of his "final ball".
So, to the reality from my perspective. Lawrie certainly has some strengths. Chief amongst these is his boundless energy, willingness to play the length of the field, playing with real passion and willingness to get stuck in. Against that, I think he is relatively weak defensively (compared to the rest of our back 4 plus Rhoys Wiggins) and DOES lack quality and composure in his final ball.
On balance, a good signing and it's great to see him doing well. BUT - give me a pairing of Solly on the right and Wiggins on the left any day.Meanwhile, all power to him.
Lawrie Wilson played very well yesterday. He does sometimes get caught the wrong side of his man, and often seems a little on the back foot.
That said, he defended well yesterday (along with the rest of our back five) despite England's bright hope Tom Ince being brought on directly against him. He stuck to the task and came out on top on numerous occasions. When he didnt win the ball he managed to drive Ince inside into a crowded midfield for the likes of Hollands, Stephens and Pritchard to crowd him out.
Can get the basics wrong but couldnt fault him yesterday.
I thought he looked ok in his first couple of games. I didn't think that he looked out of place, just like he was adapting to new team mates.
I, completely, understook why he came in when Wiggins was injured. Solly had played at left back in the past, and Wilson reportedly cost close to £500k, Evina was signed on a free after a season at Oldham and some appearences in the Arsenal reserves.
I think Wilson was signed in anticipation of Solling moving for a large fee this summer. Wiggins injury had, ironically, allowed us to play them both. I.e. Wilson has managed to show what he can do at right back without Solly having to be 'rested'.
I think it poses a dilema now though. Wiggins will be expected to come back into the side as soon as he is fit enough, but I can see Powell wanting to keep Wilson in the team. Maybe he will move to play on the right had side of midfield is Green fails to play like he has in the last couple of games.
One of the problems he faced was that we wanted to push on and people viewed what we thought might be our major signing coming from L1 as a disappointment. You really can't judge players just on what league they're in though. I remember at the start of last season people were putting Adam Le Fondre's name around and being shot down because ALF was League Two and hadn't proven himself at L1 level. Now he's a Premier League player. Wonder if there's anyone who wouldn't take him in our situation now, let alone in L1

Wilson will always have good games and bad games all players will.
I didn't want to get on his back when he first came as its easy to be too quick to judge (Wiggins was a prime example).
The overriding reason i'm laid back about this is we have a manager who was an England fullback, Chris Powell is no mug and knows a good full back when he sees one , and we are a good club to join if you are an up and coming young full back , so you can learn from the best , so too speak.
Even Chris Solly is playing out of position , and playing very well , he will improve as a player and his value will soar as well.
Wilson is getting better and better , just give him lots of support and encouragement and he will thrive.
That's why this site has gone down hill people just starting threads and posting things to start a barnie . I used to post quite a lot just read now apart a few posts that have the desired effect that I respond to.
I think people on here gave him about two games, before they were moaning.....hes getting better and better, still you always like someone to slaughter.Going by what i was hearing yesterday,i believe it is Pritchards turn now!......

What people don't seem to understand is that sometimes it takes players time to settle into the team and also get match fit as oppossed to physically fit. We have seen this time and time again. The system that does not allow players regular competitive games unless they are first teamers, inevitably means that when players do get into the first XI opportunity they do not fit in straight away.

Well played Wilson you absolute CAFC legend! (Till next weekend!)
