left back for Derby

edited September 2012 in General Charlton
By the sound of it Wiggins is crocked for Derby, so who do we play there?

Evina is the natural choice, but he has had little game time and is only 20, wish he had had some loan experience last season. Would rather he had some bench time before doing a full 90 minutes.

I thought Solly did well @ left back and the jury is out for some on Wilson, but he would have a further 90 minutes and it would be away from the Valley boo boys.

Finally, its difficult to drop your captain after 5 games, Jackson was our captain fantastic last season, he also started his charlton career @ left back, could he do a job or is he too slow.

Of course there is the loan option but I think that would motivate the squad when you already have options.

My view would be Wilson Solly with Evina on the bench

  • If i were evina and i didn't start, i'd be straight up to powell and tell him im off, what's the point in being back up lb if you don't even get a game when wiggins is out.

This. Im still stunned he got hardly any game time last season. If he wasnt trusted at League 1, the chances of him playing this year must be pretty minimal

  • Didn't think of Jackson there. Might not be a bad shout. Play Kerkar in front of him.
  • When are we playing Derby ?

    I though Ipswich A was next ?
  • JJ left back kerkar left midfield solly right back hopefully a loan centre midfielder and n ' guessan in this week

Tuesday night derby and sat next week Ipswich i thought
  • If Jackson meets pacey winger he's in trouble, if not I like the idea of that.but I think we should give Evina a chance seeing as he is our LB backup that's his job !

He didn't play very often last season because Wiggins was always available.

He is only 20 but unlike others such as Mambo he has experience in League 1. Some on here weren't impressed with his cup performances but he clearly needs a run of games.

Give him a chance and see what he can do, if he really struggles Solly will have to play there.

I fully agree, just wish we had given him a few minutes last season against much weaker teams.
  • It should be Evina but its a good excuse to shake up the midfield and still keep JJ on so can see him playing there.
  • I would start with Evina. We already have too many square pegs in round holes. Let's see what he can do.

    Agreed.
I will be amazed if CP seriously considers anything else.

    Blimey

  • Play me, ill put a shift in !
  • The best choice is Solly with Wilson on the right. Evina is not up to it, there is noone else. SO: Hamer .. Wilson Morrison Cort Solly .. Green (Haynes if fit) Stephens Hollands Kerkar .. Fuller Wright-Phillips .. (sorry JJ and Kermorgant .. not this time) .. we need pace and something 'different'
  • With JJ not really playing as an orthodox left mid, I don't think Solly is a long terms solution there, because if you're expecting him to get crosses in, he'll be constantly checking back and defenders will get wise to that. I'm also not keen on Jacko at left back - during his first spell he seemed to be caught out too often. So, Evina. Nice to have three options though.
  • Solly on the left, Wilson on the right.

    Green on the wing. ;-)
  • JJ will get murdered at left back if he comes up against a winger with half decent pace. Got to throw Evina in and see if he sinks or swims. He is the back up for that position.
Solly is our best defender and has to play in his strongest position in this league. As others have said already we can't afford square pegs in round holes at this level.

  • Evina should start as he is cover for Wiggy. Whats the point in having him in the squad if you don't use him. Don't think JJ is an option in that position unless we lose Evina too.
  • Solly and Evina. Give Hollands a break and start JJ and Stephens in CM and Kerkar on the left. And Green on the right.
Pritch as an impact sub and Hollands if things need tightening up.
  • Evina should be given his chance now.Second choice would be Solly with Wilson at right back and last option is Jackson at left back.

Your midfield is more creative and skilled on paper - but in practice surely too lightweight?

Probably. But I'd still like to see it given a go.
As I said if we need strengthening we can put Hollands back in there to win tackles.
I just feel we are missing a trick by not having wingers in there.

Then we've gone from a lightweight but not overly skilled midfield to a lightweight but skilled one. Improvement... ;)
  • lol at Newbie!
  • Evina. When he played that game in L1 he actually didn't look too bad; and he looked like one of the better players against Leyton Orient in the Capital One Cup. I'd like to see him get a chance to prove himself too. Also, it's better than playing Solly at LB which IMO weakens both sides of the defence. (Solly played well - don't get me wrong; but I think it would be better to have him playing at his usual position.)

I agree with EastStand 100% though; I think CM could suit Jackson a little more in this league - and along with Stephens could give us a little more creative play. I'd love to see Kerkar - especially after his cameo with Fuller at Forest; I really think this guy is promising. As for Green - this season I think he could prove himself; he was good last night.

It's definitely the time for a shake up in midfield though.
  • Has to be Evina.

Evina is the reserve specialist LB, so logically he should start.

If Powell doesn't start him, he'll surely be on the bench as cover.

However, if management don't have sufficient confidence in playing him, the lad needs to go out on loan to get game time once Wiggins is fit.

He may just need the confidence that comes with stringing a few games together.
