  • whilst doing the match thread it seemed like we had a steady start...was never threatened really...and could've been 2 up by HT if Jacko etall had taken their chances.....but I predicted a 1-1 yesterday.....and I'll take that whilst being slightly disappointed we dropped 2 points against what I believe to be one of the best teams in the league at home....lets see how we respond on Tuesday....I think the other teams will be surprised....and will take notice.
  • I went today and my main take outs were:

    - Leon Cort was immense
    - Wiggins is the most 'ready' of our team for Prem football
    - Pritchard was very handy on the right, and can put a much better cross in than I realised
    - Stephens showed some really class touches.

But overall, we have a real chance to do something this year. IF WE CAN JUST GET IN A STRIKER AND CENTRE MID. Still not convinced BWP will score the 20 goals we need, and I am worried that we dont have the cover in CM if we get an injury to Stephens or Hollands if Pritch stays on the right.

The board have to think long and hard what the financial gain is of staying in this league and thriving. Our first 11 is ok, but as soon as we get a couple of injuries we will be short of where we need to be.

Overall, very promising and would have taken a point beforehand. But PLEASE lets build on this now and have a safe first season back in the champ.
  • happy with the performance, gutted with the result. Deserved better. Whole team played well but Morro was immense. We did drop too deep after scoring but you can understand CP bringing on Taylor once Zigic was on. Another minute and no one, Golfie included, would be moaning. Very encouraging though. Great turnout too. Looking forward to next two home games, I predict 4 points.
  • Really hope the financial problems can be sorted ASAP, a great chance to build on last season and with a bit of luck who knows we could be £60m richer at the end of it.

Also people who moan about the atmosphere at the Valley compared to some of the grounds I've been to it really isn't that bad. Birmingham today was awful.
  • God i hate Lee Clark
  • For a start we don't "need" BWP to score 20 goals to be safe in this division. We only need to improve the side if we're gonna gamble on trying to win promotion at the first attempt.

I would rather we just stay comfortable financially, which means having this team help us to a top half finish. Don't see why people feel the need to pressure the club to stretch beyond their means simply because you lack patience?

agreed, looking at the team currently - BWP does have to be top scorer because I don't think Jackson will score as many from Midfield this year and so to survive, we need 1 goalscorer but I think BWP will do enough. We don't need to go out and sign 8 players+, we showed today we can compete. Financially, I don't believe we are in a massive mess, I just think we cannot afford to strengthen as much as we would like - which could affect our position by a couple of places. As long as we are 21st or higher come May I will be reasonably happy.
  • Was initially gutted when their goal went in, but if you look at it in a wider context, you can only take positives out of it.

A number of chances that we missed were down to fine margins. A couple of headers which on another day will go into the back of the net. Easy to say, sure, and perhaps I will be proven wrong throughout the season, but I'm not prepared to criticise any part of the side after today's performance.

We created plenty against a side widely tipped to be there or thereabouts. Really not sure about Golf's crosses comments. Our delivery from wide areas today was top quality. Compare that to Birmingham's which Hamer swept up every time.

We took the game to them and we more than competed. We created more, better chances against a side with an England goalkeeper and what must be one of the best centre backs in the league, Curtis Davies. To me it wasn't the performance of a side necessarily raising their game to this level, it was the performance of a side comfortable at this level.

Another point for me to raise - this is exactly the kind of thing that this team has proven time and time again that it learns from.

There'll be ups and downs this season, but I'm not prepared to worry about any potential downs tonight.

Got back a couple of hours ago, and watched the rest of Match of the Day and the Football League Show.

Agree with most of what's already been said. Wiggins was great today, always a threat and him and Jackson really do seem to have a good understanding down that flank.

We were definitely the better side, choked to lose it at the death.

    Other points:
    1) The bloke sitting a few rows behind me, lambasting BWP at every opportunity. I know he does seem to divide opinions on here (personally not sure why; top scorer, top assist maker - enough said), but to shout abuse at him every time he took a bad touch was a bit much.
    2) Birmingham seem to have a bigger proportion of tw@ts among their fans than most clubs. Cut throat gestures from the first minute to the last. It's a game of football lads.
    3) Think we'll be more than comfortable in this division.
    4) Great support all afternoon.

    Bring on Leicester!
  • Sounded like BWP was good today, following the thread. Updates made it sound like he was sharp and putting in a shift

  • Bwp did 1 thing wrong today and that was a pass inside the box when he could've shot that's all

It was a good idea to pass however if he had looked first instead of just expecting yann to be there.

Bwp was the player that they were worried about and IMO he made them drop very deep at times allowing lots of space for the midfielders

Anyone who couldn't and can't see that has a problem with Bwp that is not based on football but is based on either a dislike of Bwp body language or something else
  • Loads of us said we would be overrun in midfield - well no evidence of that following our tough start. Then some are speculating on what we would achieve had we brought a few more in - I think it is apt to quote - you don't know what you've got till it's gone - some seemingly don't understand what we have got. Surely yesterday's performance confirms that the right thing to do is to let this group of players show us what they are capable of before we talk about stengthening and replacements!!!! I have consitently believed they have what it takes and that belief is all the firmer now. COYRS

Agreed but it's a bit more complex than that isn't it ? Allegedly its the chairman who is impatient for speedier success and it's that that's caused our current financial plight. Without new money the prospect of promotion to the EPL is possible but IMHO unlikely and I don't think our current board are in this for years of teir two mediocrity. If that's what's on the table they might want out. So for possibly different reasons I want our finances sorted out sooner rather than later

  • Great performance, great result and great atmosphere from thwe travelling Addicks. Although I would have taken a point, it did feel like a defeat at the end, especially after the chances that were missed. Still, very encouraging.

    You are both right.

Let's not encourage a restless push for promotion. If we've got a team good enough to stand up to Birmingham on their own patch, that's damn well good enough for me.

In current circumstances the only way with the current board that we will afford a decent striker (and is Baldock really that much better than BWP?) is by selling Chris Solly.

You don't mend a hole in the roof by taking tiles from another part and creating a different hole.
  • @Prague

Are you now saying that we are now so impecunious that The Valley roof is leaking ? First potholes and now this.

Totally agree with the comment about the Birmingham 'dozen' behind the goal. Was well worth a giggle though and all the sirens you could here were the local Police scooting about trying to find 12 fella's who had managed to get out from the local OAP shelter.

  • We have to face facts that like all other clubs we have a few supporters that are a) ar***les and b) have little football knowledge. Until they bring a law preventing them from attending matches I suppose we'll just have to put up with them.
  • Birmingham have always had more than their fair share of tw*ts.

  • Golfie, sometimes I wonder what game u actually watch. Pritchard was superb yesterday.

Loved it when wiggins done the step over turn in the first half. Completely mugged their winger off.
  • There was a lovely Pritchard moment, that showed he is still a bit non league. The ball went out for a Brum throw and Pritchard was nearest to the ball, so he picks it up and gives it to the Brum player - lovely!
  • I lost count of the number of times the commentators mentioned Pritchard putting in great crosses. Many on here are seriously under estimating not only how good some of our players are, but also their collective spirit which can take us a long way. I only saw about 8 games last season, but that was enough to see that players like, Pritchard, Yann, JJ,Solly, Wiggins, Morrison, Cort and Hamer were already Championship quality, many others like BWP, Stephens, Hollands, Green, Waggy and now Cook all have the potential to thrive in this division with more space and time on the ball. We all need to start believing, keep the momentum moving in an upward trajectory and the feel good factor alive. Let's see where it takes us at the end of the season, we have nothing to fear, we are very good team.

    Good post qa

  • Pritch has always put in decent crosses. He provided the ball for Yann's goal of the season and he chucked in a lot of good balls last year. If he can work on maintaining the width and focusing his runs down the wing he could be our best option on the right. It didn't really work against Rochdale but then he had Wiggins behind him and that match was a bit of a mess frankly. Pritch seems very adaptable so it's an exciting prospect
  • Gutted that Birmingham equalised with the last kick of the game but would have definitely taken a draw before the game. Pleased with that!! Looking forward to Tuesday!
  • I would of taken 1-1 before the match all day long but after conceding in the 94th min I'm gutted! Really proud of the boys today. B'ham away first game is a tough test but we passed (especially defensively) with flying colours for 93mins. The back five were immense, really impressed with Hamer who some people have questioned in the past. I think Pritch was at right mid for his defensive capabilities but he also put in a few decent balls too which was encouraging. IMHO we are in desperate need for another striker. BWP struggled today against two decent centre backs and to have the option of another striker on the bench would do us the world of good, although Cook did make an impact when he came on. Overall very happy and if I was SCP I would be looking for a minimum of 4 points over the next 2 games.

They tried that and it didn't work:

  • The performance was the main positive every Charlton supporter can take away from this. They were fantastic and as Powell said, "To a man" they really were brilliant. Just a mention, the atmosphere we created without the drummer, it really was special and definitely one of the very best I've experienced.

Absolutely gutted we conceded at the very end but everyone would have taken a point before the match, it's just a shame we didn't get all three with the performance and going in front, not to mention the equaliser right at the very end. However, we're off the mark and if we play like we did yesterday, we'll be more than fine, infact, we could be a real surprise and have a push at play offs.

Very proud of my team right now. Well done too all.
  • Before the game though we would get beaten and was happy to take a point at 3pm. By 5pm was so annoyed we didn't get all 3 which is a good thing, showed how well we played. Hamer really impressed me didn't drop any crosses the whole day. Wiggins and Solly played well and Cort. Shame we didn't score a couple more chances today. Good day out and can't wait for Tuesday for our first win of the season
