Birmingham Away Seating/Area

edited August 2012 in General Charlton
Hi all,

This thread is aimed at the lifers who are making the trip to Birmingham on the 18th.
This match will be the first away game I attend by myself so I was just curious where most fans have their tickets in the stand and whether we can move about once in the ground ourselves?

Mine's Block 2 in the Lower part of the stand, so I thought it would be nice to possible be with a few other lifers to enjoy the game rather than experience it on my own. I know when I went to Stevenage away last season there were a couple of arguments/fights due to people going where they prefer to be.

Look forward to next saturday, I have a strange good feeling about it myself. Thanks all.

  • If you're in The Lower Block you'll likely meet some nice gentlemen from Birmingham, who will come to say hello at the end of the game, if we've won :-)
  • I don't know whether you're being funny or suggesting that you will come and say hello. Sorry Covered End, I know you're a very well respected poster but I am left slightly confused. :-(

My ticket says - GIL MERRICK LOWER BLOCK 2
Is this where our fans have been put and will you be going?
  • Sorry, I was trying to be funny. No, I'm not going as I haven't found them to be a friendly bunch in the past. I'll leave it there. If we're taking 1500+ I should imagine people will have to sit in their allocated seat.
  • Okay thank you Covered End. Much appreciated. :-)

However, I am now slightly apprehensive knowing that they're not too friendly as I am going on my own for the first time, a few of days before my 17th, also after having a major knee operation only 2 months ago. But saying that, as long as I stay out of any trouble and get back to the coach straight away, I should be fine right?

They're gonna come looking for you after the game
  • Don't sit too near the front, unless you want to be the one to beat them back.
Oh & don't sit at the back in case they put a brick through it.
  • Haha, thanks for the heads up! - I'll try and be out of there in a flash and to sit in the middle amongst everybody else.
I can't wait for the season to start! :-)
  • Stop being an idiot Prior. Its the kids first away game. I can remember when you was panicking what bus to get to Bexleyheath when we had a coach going to Derby a few years ago. People sorted you out a few pints in the pub before hand.
Sage have a great day mate and this will no doubt ve the first of many away games in your Charlton life, in which you will experience some fantastic highs as well as hit some all time lows but it is part and parcel of football. I have met some fantastic mates in my away games who have friends for 25 years and wouldnt have swaped any of my experiences.
  • Sage Brum is not that bad. But last time I was there we had the upper tier. Haven't bought my ticket yet though.
  • Went on my own at the same age midweek and saw us win, was no trouble and there won't be any here. Stop worrying.

Take your normal seat then after 10 or so minutes have a scout about to see where's still free. Best thing to do if you're stuck in a quiet bit.

  • Last time we played up there in the Nationwide ( 2-1 up at half time, Lloyd Sam puts one against the post when it was easier to hit the back of the net and we go down 3-2) there was plenty of room to move around. As their supporters sit in the overhanging upper tier, be careful where you sit. I like to think it was coca cola raining down from above, but have my doubts. I did walk from the station and back on my own and had no problems, but then we had lost and being an oldie do not attract much attention. Previously I have been by coach and unless things have changed you should have no trouble as the away end has its own car park and the coaches unload/ load there. I recall the coaches had to wait until the hostiles had dispersed and were then escorted by police motorcyclists for the first couple of miles away from the ground.
  • Thanks again all. Very much appreciated and the stories being told are nice to know as well.

@WhenIwasALittleBoy - This isn't my first away game, I have been to loads before now, but it's my first on my own without a friend with me. Thanks though, we definitely all will have some amazing highs (Carlise away) and some bad lows too.

I will take all of the advice and tips with me, I doubt there will be much, if any, trouble but you can never be so sure. I look forward to it. :-)

    Cheers all!
  • Ur all making it sound as bad as going to millwall! Thinking of sending our tickets back now?

Grounds have allocated seating? See, I learn so much on this site.

I don't know what Birmingham are like when you lot visit but if it's even half what we get when we play there then it probably is worse than The Den for Charlton fans.

I've never known a hostile reception for you lot in SE16. The atmosphere is always similar to when we played Gillingham in big games back in the late 90s/early 00s. Which is pretty welcoming by our standards for a big game.

Whereas the Brummies love picking off groups of Londoners.

You knew that Bunny. After all you lot normally take your seat with you.

Ha - we might take a seat with us...but I never knew they were allocated to a specific person. How odd.

Awe, poor Stu, one of the few Millwall fans that cares about his allocated seat - he'll never live that down will he. He stills gets the piss ripped out of him every now and then, even now.

  • Sage, have a good one mate. Nothing to worry about, people like to talk up away days like its the football factory but you will be fine mate. Pretty sure my ticket says lower block so I'll shout out 'sage' before kick off so be sure to give us a wave ha.
If you are concerned about bein on ur own mate I'd just advise to get into the ground early doors and have a drink under the stand.
  • Sage I wouldn't worry, I go to most away games on my own and never had any problems. People always give it the big one on here but doubt they are the same at the game. If you are going by coach the coaches park just outside the ground right by the turnstiles at Brummy. All away fans sit in the lower end at Brummy and if you are going by train come out the ground turn left and head towards the big roundabout keep going towards the city centre and catch a taxi on the main road instead of hanging about at the ground.
  • Defo in the lower block. Went brum v chelsk a couple of years back. I was in the brum end and chelsk were in the lower tier
  • Pretty sure they're are Brummies in the tier above, bring waterproofs!
  • I was there when they threw a bike and toaster at us from that top tier - as well as some much appreciated drinking money!
  • Pretty sure they're are Brummies in the tier above, bring waterproofs!

Yes Brummies top tier and possibly to your left in the ground on the same stand unless we suddenly sell out are whole allocation
  • Thanks again guys. - I'm sure all will be fine and no trouble will happen, rarely does with Charlton.

The worst I've been in was Wednesday last season. Which wasn't too bad but still a little dangerous, especially for the women caught amongst it.

I have been to plenty of away games before, I think I went to 10 last season. I was just asking about this specific one as it will be my first on my own, but thank you again. It's nice to have fellow Charlton fans looking out for each other, ultimately we're kind of a big family ourselves as we all love the club. As the coaches park right outside the away end, I'm confident nothing will happen anyway. @ValleyGary I will be sure to wave back as long as I hear it, you may see Sage on the back of my shirt around.

Cheers all, if you're going enjoy! If not, enjoy the season, we'll do just fine.
  • Birmingham is the only place I won't go to after some Brummy tosser spat in my face after we beat them 4-3 in 1996. I was 12 at the time. Really classless place that doesn't deserve my money. I will be listening on CAFC Player. I hope we stuff them.
  • Don't worry about it mate, I went to uni in brum and they're an ok bunch up there, unless they're playing villa! They might give a bit of banter but that's it!
