I don't understand the hostility towards him expressed by some on here. He was a reasonably good player for us, and had one or two excellent games. I wish him well.
People should not think he will earn big dough over there, the big name players get 95% of the cash and the journeymen fight over the scraps.
Probably be lucky to get the same money he was on at Leeds.
Was probably on a few quid there though
Not under "Cuddly" Ken Bates!!!
Don't forget Sam was on decent money at Charlton from the Premiership days so he probably would not have got that much more at Leeds given how tight Ken Bates is around a pound note.
My friend has great connections at Leeds - and has lunched with Bates several times - and Bates takes great pride in how cheaply he can get players to come to the club - he hates paying a penny more than he has to.
That last paragraph could explain why a massive club like Leeds have been out of the Premier League for eight seasons. He must be very proud of himself!
That's why the fans had those mass protests against him at the end of last season, they have got him well sussed now.
They were grateful for him coming in and saving them from financial ruin but he seems to be happy treading water rather than getting them out of the CCC.
That's why Bates brought Warnock in, he has a history of producing successful teams with very little cash.

Maybe so, but where would 95% of us choose to live if given the choice between New York or Yorkshire? I'd be whistling yankee doodle dandy all the way to the airport........................
True, but NY is one of the most expensive cities in the world and Sam won't be living in Lower Manhattan on the dough he'd be earning!
Rents in the decent parts of NY are off the charts crazy.

Good job they play in New Jersey then ;-)
Ha! That's brilliant, I can imagine a few players going there for the glamour of a NY lifestyle and getting there and being told, "Oh, by the way......"
Although not the greatest player in the world I never disliked Mr Sam. However, who does he know that has managed to get him over there?!
"He signed with Leeds in July 2010, and had a loan stint with Notts County, the same club that Red Bulls coach Hans Backe managed and ex-Red Bulls striker Luke Rodgers started for."

Harrison, New Jersey - roughly equivalent to living in Charlton, actually....;0)
Good luck to him. I'll never forget when he turned a Colchester (I think) LB inside out and left him injured in a heap. Had so much promise, but he was in a poor team. I actually quite liked him..... I know I'm probably in the minority.
I only really remember him for coming on in the last 2 minutes of the last game of the season where we celebrated a mighty 1-1 draw that sent Palace down.

That's like inviting someone to play in London for the "Blackheath Bandits" and then turning up an finding out they play in Gillingham!!!
He wont be a regular starter for them, as someone who has watched them a few times, they have better even if you ignore there star players, dont blame him for taking the chance, great up and coming club with a good plan for the future, in a great area next to the best city in the world IMO.
Good luck to him. He was loads sbetter than Kyle Read.
Would disagree. Thought that Kyel Reid was technically one of the best players we've had in recent years but was low on confidence (as was the whole team).

I'm with you. He looked too good for league one, way quicker than the defenders he was up against. But he rarely delivered, although I'd like to know how he'd have done in last season's team.
Yes, Lloyd Sam going to the Red Bulls for a trial probably says something about the quality of the MLS. Completely agree. But that likely means something different to me than to others.
We see a bit of A-League football here as it is broadcast live on weekend nights. For those with young children, it is a useful distraction for getting them back to sleep. The level of play seems pretty different. We had Danny Allsopp here and (one of our favorites) Fred, who have now returned to the Melbourne Victory and Heart respectively. Both struggled with the level of play in the MLS and Fred ended up relegated as a reserve before going back to the A-League and being designated the Heart's player of the year in April.
But the "is this country's league closer to our Championship, League One, League Two, or non-league" football comparisons continue to amuse me. I'm certain MLS teams would struggle to compete in England's mighty NPower Championship and they probably quake at the thought of ever facing the indomitable Perth Glory.
All leagues have crap teams and crap matches and, yet, all seem to be able to produce transcendent talent. Lloyd Sam, if he ends up with the Red Bulls (are we really judging the quality of a team by players they have on trial?), will be asked to relieve some of the pressure on Connor Lade. You probably don't know and don't care who Connor Lade is, so never mind, and back to slagging off a player that failed to meet expectations.

"You can see some of his qualities in the video below, and judge for yourself. Let us and let us know what you think of the player".
i can't access it, any Charlton clips?
From the link further up.
The level over there isn't that high, most players will earn approx £50,000 per year. But he will get games on the TV and get to live a fun lifestyle.
Fantastic pace, crossing ability and shot on him.
To the extent folks are interested, the union for the MLS players makes public all salaries for all the team's in the league, including salaries through the beginning of August (but doesn't include Cahill).
