Tonbridge

edited August 2012 in General Charlton
Anyone going? As I go regularly to both Charlton and Tonbridge this little friendly is a must for me. Anyone else going? I am aware that there will also be a number of our Millwall friends attending as I was told last week that Tonbridge and neighbouring Paddock Wood are 'Millwall towns' - not suggesting for one minute that there will be any problems but worth being aware of.

We're obviously much more Tonbridge wells and Sevenoaks.
  • I'm thinking of going
  • I went to this once, many years ago. When the teams came out for the second half I shouted 'Come on you reds!' as loudly as I could and Kim Grant looked at me and shook his head, obviously thinking 'What a twat'.
I went to school in Tonbridge and I remember in the mid 80s, someone declaring 'Millwall run Tonbridge'. In fact, the biggest teams in Tonbridge are Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd.
  • I went to school in Tonbridge too in the late 70s/early 80s when I lived in Sevenoaks. Didn't know about any Millwall connection.
  • Tonbridge a Millwall town?! Hahaha don't make me laugh. Tonbridge and Paddock Wood are shit holes though, so there are some shifty characters about but you will be fine. Really don't think they'll be any Millwall apart from a few spotty teenagers that have watched football factory a couple too many times maybe giving it the biggun. Tonbridge is a decent club as well so I think if anyone is causing trouble it'll be dealt with. Might go with a couple of mates. And se10 it's spelt Tunbridge Wells ;) just had to get that off my chest, tonbridge and tunbridge wells folk are very touchy about that
  • Well every week we get the train from tonbridge and ive never seen any millwall on station?
  • Well every week we get the train from tonbridge to the valley and ive never seen any millwall on station?
  • Tonbridge 'a Millwall town'? pfffffffffffffffft!

Did the bloke who told you that sound like Danny Dyer?

I didn't realise that towns were apportioned out like that. I suppose, like SE10 says, we must have got Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks then. We definitely got a far better deal, if that's the case!

  • Seen a lot of chelsea shirts in tonbridge lately though! Must be going cheap in sport and soccer!
    Back to the thread
4 of us going tomorrow rather give our money to them and not scallys skanky pocket.
  • Last time I saw Charlton at Tonbridge it was:

    F A Cup first round. Saturday 18th November 1972. Tonbridge 0 (0) Charlton Athletic 5 (2) (Horsfield 11, Peacock 21 86, Flanagan 51, Gilchrist (og) 52).
    Angel Ground. Att: 7,770.

  • Lived in Tonbridge for three years never saw one Millwall shirt.
  • Do see the odd one now not many though.
  • Tonbrige is home to one of the most prestigious public schools in the country, with a fine sporting tradition, having produced the Cowdreys, Ed Smith and various other Kent and England cricketers. The school has also produced some fine rugby players, whose names escape me as I'm not really a follower, and I think some international hockey players.

But a ''Millwall town''? It's not even a football town!!! And if it is, its current population of east Europeans working on the local farms means that Legia Warsaw and Sparta Prague probably have more local followers than ruddy Millwall.

That said , they do have a lovely local football club and anyone attending will have a splendid day out and is guaranteed to receive a warm welcome.
  • haha having been to school in tonbridge it is definitely not millwall, i don't think i know/ever seen a millwall fan around here! a few palarse maybe but thats it, all prem otherwise. having said that, definitely going to this, fingers crossed its more inspiring than the crawley game!
  • Millwall town!!!!
  • Down the road from tunbridge wells so will defo be there. Guessing Clarke Hayes and some youth eg. Azeez, pigott etc?

  • Always thought it was more Chelsea myself, seeing some of their infamous ones resided there many years ago.

No, he went to King's Canterbury, I think.

The lower high street below the school is a shit hole, full of charity shops. And I'm not sure where all the east Europeans (who have replaced the travellers as the migrant workforce employed to pick the strawberries and the hops) live. But the surrounding area is stunningly beautiful and all of the villages around Tonbridge such as Penshurst, Chiddingstone rand Hever remain part of the classic English rural idyll.

Oh yeah, the countryside round here is gorgeous. Tonbridge just isn't a nice place
  • I live in Tonbridge and was always planning to go to this one...but I'm afraid the lack of a first X1 and the Olympics is gonna keep me firmly indoors. There aren't many Millwall in Tonbridge btw, certainly no more than there are Charlton. I heard talk of a Millwall pub out in nearby Hadlow but that's about it. As for the town it's hardly a shitehole although it has it's share of low lifes like most places.

It does however cost more to rent a flat in Tonbridge than it does in neighbouring 'Royal' Tunbridge Wells, so it's a place on the up.

That's because tunbridge wells is a proper shit hole full of toffs!

Well said. Anyone who went to Gillingham last weekend will think they've found Homer's fields of Elysium when they arrive in Tonbridge!

  • matt i'm from paddock wood and whilst i can confirm it is a shithole i can assure you it is definately not a 'millwall' shithole!
  • Paddock Wood is not that bad. They have a Waitrose and everything!
  • Doesnt scotty wagstaff live in tunbridge wells or born there?!

went to school in tunbridge wells but I think he lives near maidstone. Used to sometimes see him out with his girlfriend in spoons but he doesn't drink. Haven't seen him there in years come to think of it.
