Welling Utd v Charlton Athletic PSF - 14 July 2012 - Match Thread

"Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, we're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside"

It maybe just the "traditional curtain raiser" (using this term is obligatory when referring to this fixture) but it means the bit we all really enjoy, the young fit blokes wearing a Charlton shirt and kicking a football stuff, is back.

Rewind 12 months and this game was spent asking "who's that one?" as 18 or so of Powell's new signings plus a couple of trialists appeared for the first time. Green scored a long range cracker, Morrison looked solid and Williams scored a goal.

This year will be less exciting in the "I know who that is" stakes. Wilson and Cook are likely to play some part while there are rumours of a Spanish keeper being on trial. Otherwise the big exciting new sighting will be the rather fetching black away kit.

Sir Chris has said he will field two totally different teams in each half so expect a slow and disjointed performance with the 8 or so newly signed youngsters being the only ones busting a gut to impress.

Prediction. 4 - 0 to the Addicks with Izele McLeod scoring twice to spark huge rows on CL as to whether the "only here to get fit striker" is worthy of another chance. Nah, calm down, only joking, its been a long summer.

  • Any chance the rain will put the game in doubt ? I'd imagine Welling will do everything possible to ensure the game goes ahead, but would we risk injury, especially to a squad which may not receive much reinforcement, on a dodgy surface ?
  • Assume izale is still at barnet? Who knows there might be a surprise trialist

Out of contract I believe and looking for a new Club

  • Izele McLeod says "I've unfinished business here................."
  • ........and paired up front with Chris Dickson !!
  • Who'll be the first to shout "Who's the wanker(s) in the black!?"" when we're 4-0 down inside the first 2mins?

Any guesses on which senior player(s) won't be involved, which leads to all sorts of speculation about players being sold/falling out with Powell/reporting to training unfit?

With Wilson and Cook we now have two senior players for each position (except CB), I wouldn't expect more than 2/3 youngsters to be involved.
  • unable to provide ball by ball match thread today, back with full updates if we get any commentary on any friendlies this season....if not I'll be ready for the Brum!!

I'd be concerned of Wiggins wasn't involved

  • Is there any commentary on the player for this game does anyone know.
  • I know the youth team played Colchester today, so most of the youngsters would've played in that game, and probably won't feature later...
  • Big game this (in some ways) its welling yeh but still a football match we should win.
Apparent off-field problems/uncertainty can show on the pitch as we saw when we got relegated from the championship.

That'll be the u18s, the 8 Henry mentioned signed pro and will be part of the u21 squad. Most are too old to play for the u18s.
  • I remember last year we had that Andersen fella playing centre half for us. Where's he ended up? Looked pretty good.
  • #cafc (first half): Pope, Cousins, Evina, Taylor, Cort, Harriott, Green, Pritchard, Bover, Kermorgant, BWP.
  • (second half): Jacobo, Wiggins, Mambo, Morrison, Solly, Jackson, Stephens, Wagstaff, Haynes, Smith, Cook.

Could this be the trialist goalie? He's big enough..

  • No Hamer, Sullivan, Wilson or Hayes then.
  • No Hollands either
  • O-randy-hunt called the Spanish gk on trial the other day.
  • No Wilson or Hollands then
  • Fox, Osborne and Azeez warming up too.
  • Jackson possibly playing in the middle second half? That's worth keeping an eye on.

On 21 April 2012, after the Superleague season was over, Jacobo was released by Asteras in order to move to Everton in England

When roughly translated this suggests that he was released to move to Everton.
