Wearing colours during the close season?

what is that about?
I never understood why people feel the need in showing the rest of us who they support when there are no games on. It’s bad enough during the season, people wandering around in their liverpool shirts or whatever but why when its closed season? Have a rest.

I went to Westfield’s the other day to see several people parading about showing the world who they support. obviously when its charlton it’s not so bad, but when I see spanner fans and palarse fans wandering around it puts me right off trying to buy my latest pair of chinos.

  • Strange post. What's wrong with showing pride in who you support?

I put my Charlton shirt on to go to the gym, when I go to play football, just if I'm off down the shops I just throw anything on.

Don't really think much of it to be honest.
  • Westfield in Stratford had Millwall & Palace fans wandering about?

  • I wear mine all year round too. Being a distance away helps me maintain my identity, plus people will often stop and chat about football , most recently in Primark, which made having to go there almost bearable!
  • strange, but i'm the complete opposite Karim.

I wear my Charlton gear all the time, except perversely when i go to a game.
  • Since I started wearing my Charlton shirt for 5-a-side a few weeks ago I have basically been unstoppable, though I say it myself.
  • shepards bush westfields.
  • It's the only time Grouse can do it safely.
But I suppose if you've just spent £40 odd quid on a piece of polyester tat you probably want to get as much out of it as you can before it becomes "so last year".
  • I wear mine all the time. Matches, the park, wherever. I like they way the look and I like wearing them.
  • i wear my 1998-99 season shirt to 5-a-side on thursdays and sometimes the year we had Redbus as a sponser...early 00's that was. but other than that i lost interest in buying football shirts. i prefer the training tops or the t-shirts.
  • I always wear my charlton pants whether we are playing or not

Saw loads of QPR shirts & headscarves when I went!

  • I always thought if the club size was based on the amount of replica tops you see out and about at shopping centres and entertainment parks then West Ham, Chelsea and Arsenal would be global giants.

If it was based on tacky tracksuits then Liverpool would dwarf Real Madrid, with Palace a close second if you happen to past through an area having a big computer game sale.

A resident of a run down Spanish resort may well consider Stoke City to be England's biggest club.

Great analogy, the Stoke bit especially, would you consider the same for Addicks like us at a railway convention?

You're joking aren't you...no serious trainspotter would be without their flask and duffle coat done right up...so no replica top on display.

Perhaps if bobble hats were an indicator of size...Charlton could be considered the biggest club outside of provincial Yorkshire, however.
  • Liverpool are 4th in global shirt sales I believe, so it's probably only Man Utd, Barcelona and Real Madrid above them.
  • crips and bloods
  • I take it you take a similar stance on tattoos? Or people having stickers on their cars or brollys and stuff. There's tones of things that show support out side of game days.
  • If everyone with a 'Virgin' era Crystal Palace car sticker went to games they would have been getting 150,00 a match in the late 90s.

And Gillingham wouldn't be far behind - with their Invicta 'True Blue Crew' ones.

it seems i'm mainly in the minority with the replica shirts on show during close season.

I guess i find it a bit odd. The crips and bloods comment is right. got to represent. other than actually playing football if your just walking down the street you want a reaction, you want people to know what gang your part off. Its a bit of that and a bit of well I spent £40 on it and its the first thing I found in my room and just threw it on.

have to say I haven't brought a replica shirt in years so that might have something to do with my view point.

yeah with the tattoos, i saw a guy who had shorts on and he had a lion for millwall on his leg, with something like that you cant really choose when to wear it. that i don't see as problem. apart from it being a millwall tat.

Can't say I'm a huge fan of wearing polyester all the time but each to their own

  • Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't go near a replica shirt of any sort. Should be confined to the under 16's in my view. Having said that, my 11 year old is embarrassed to even go near the Air Conditioning look.
  • Would rather see people wearing colours during the close season than on a Saturday afternoon when their 'team' is playing at home.
  • So if you can't wear a replica top over the age of 16, what am I meant to wear to football training on Tuesday nights?
  • I own lots of replica shirts from over the years as memories more than anything but have never worn any of them to a game. Have very occasionally taken a stroll in one on a Saturday afternoon down the local shops.

Every car that I / wife / girlfriends have owned has had a CAFC badge in the rear screen wether the missus wanted it or not.

I like a pair of Charlton shorts on my holidays. Also have a great flag c/o NSS.

  • I still don't understand why Air Conditioning would be embarrassing? Man Utd and Liverpool are sponsored (or have been recently) by insurance companies (AIG and Standard Chartered), surely that would be far more embarrassing for an 11 year old? The premiership itself is sponsored by that coolest of companies, a bank. In fact, let's look at a list of premier league club sponsors:

Arsenal Emirates - ok, airlines are ok
Aston Villa Genting Casinos - embarassing
    Chelsea Samsung - ok
Everton Chang Beer - ok, I guess
Fulham FxPro - foreign currency exchange? - embarassing
Liverpool Standard Chartered - insurance & finance, embarassing
Manchester City Etihad Airways - ok
    Manchester United Aon - ok
Newcastle United Virgin Money - embarassing, who wants virgin on their shirt?
Norwich City Aviva - insurance, boring, and therefore (by CL logic) embarassing
Queens Park Rangers AirAsia - ok I guess, but not a big airline, or one many would have heard of, so a little embarassing
Reading Waitrose - pretentious supermarket? embarassing!
Southampton aap3 - who now? embarassing!
Stoke City Bet365 - oh dear
Sunderland Invest In Africa - desperate much?
Swansea City 32Red - see Stoke!
Tottenham Hotspur Autonomy - business services? lame!
West Bromwich Albion Zoopla - they'd been better sticking with no sponsor
West Ham United SBOBET - unpronouncable and online betting, double fail!
Wigan Athletic 12BET - see Stoke, Swansea and West Ham

So unless you get a very big name consumer company it's going to be "embarassing" if you choose to look at it that way. Out of the 20 prem teams, less than a handful have anything but an embarassing sponsor, if you choose to be negative about it.

If you're 11 year old won't wear a charlton shirt because of the sponsor, then you're being lied to. They really want a sky 4 shirt, and the sponsor is as good excuse as any not to wear your old man's team's shirt. Especially if said old man has an irrational dislike of a football shirt sponsor!

  • C'mon guys you know the football rules. Stone Island jumper (fake) with Lacoste white trainers. Aquascutum jacket if you are really rich.

I think the difference is that "Andrews Air Conditioning" on the front looks like the sort of thing that Sunday league teams would have on their shirt. Or it might even look like you work for Andrews Air Conditioning if you're caught wearing it on the tube one day or something.

One of them is cotton! Though I don't mind a bit of polyester, doesn't feel that bad.
  • Whats wrong with a grown man wearing full kit? :)

Our best sponsors have been 'London Docklands', 'Lewisham' and 'South London Press'. Don't get the fascination with wanting some global brand plastered across your local team's kit.

Least this company you have now are local people supporting their local club.
