David Whyte is a good shout. Mixed with the wrong people.
Different club but remember Rory Allen, started at Pompey, scored v Utd then Spurs paid 1M for him - got one injury and, so the storey has it paid off his own contract to go join the Barmy Army in Oz for an Ashes tour! Not a wise move if true!
Gislason is a good one, as is Simon Walton, who is arguably to worst failure of them all considering how much we paid for him. Christensen that pardew bought too?
jamie stuart could of been but caught up in the social scene and was'nt there a couple of young irish lads that were meant to be class coming through a few seasons back?
Have to admit that when I saw Moutoakil's debut I thought he had the potential to be one of Charlton's best ever players. How wrong can one be. Also remember a lad who played for the reserves called Danny Warden back in the early 90's I think. Thought he's go all the way, but no. Hard to include David Whyte in this category - underachiever of course, but he still scored a hatfull of goals more at Div.2 level than most footballers manage.
Chris Dickson - scorted a hat trick whilst on trial & then got 5 (I think) in a reserve game. I thought we had got the next D Bent for nothing.............
martin christensen in terms of hyped up potential - meant to be equivalent of ronaldo in denmark (in fairness hes played for decent teams) - yassin mouatakil in terms of hyped up arrival - beat barcelona, milan and host of other teams to his signature apparently - now look at him cristian bolanos in terms of player we showed promise to get - hes now played in champions league
Not sure about Bacon, did anyone really think he was that good!
A few other shone brightly for a short time then faded, e.g. Sasa Ilic, who's career never lived up to his 1998 glory period (how many clean sheets was it in a row?)
Not one of ours but Joe Cole has to fall under this category, the way he was talked about he was portrayed as the next Maradona. Struggled to nail down his best position and imho never fufilled his potential.
As for Charlton, Charlie MacDonald perhaps, although he has formed a respectable League career, after the Newcastle equaliser, thought he may have a very bright future.
Ben Odeji...........now there's one from cobweb corner.
Wow that is cobweb corner ...i remember him on the "on the ball penalty prize competition"....i also rember there was a question mark about his real age

To be fair to Cole, he has won the league and cup a few times and played in the Champions League final. In terms of medals he one of the best players that West Ham ever produced.
I suppose the ultimate 'showed promise, but didnt really make it' would be Sonny Pike. As a nine year old back in 1996 he seemed to be on every football related show on the telly doing keepie ups in an Ajax kit. I believe his entire carear consisted of being an unused subsitute for Stevenage when they were in the conference. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Pike

bit about his personal breakdown and his parents marriage breaking down is very sad. Think kids should only go near professional clubs when they're 11-12 personally.
Anyone remember Cherno Samba who was on Millwall's books as a kid and was a prolific goalscorer? I think a team (Liverpool offered a lot (£2mn?) for him - he was all over the back pages - but Millwall wouldn't let him go - is that right? Anyway he's playing in the Norwegian 2nd Div now!
I remember seeing Sonny Pike being interviewed by Baddield and Skinner on Fantasy Football League (think that's what it was called) when he was about 12!

Didn't work out.

Kyel Reid too. Thought he was a great left winger. Some of his crossing and shooting was top notch. He is better than League Two, without a doubt.

Harry Arter and Josh Wright to some extent as supposedly they were going to be Premiership players (still loads of time though)
Osei Sankofa - made debut at Old Trafford!
