Ideal Signings

Ok, so providing we go up too the Championship next season, who would you realistically like to be signed for us? Include their position and what team they currently play for. I'd like too see us attempt to get:

1. Don Cowie - Cardiff - Midfield
2. Sam Baldock - West Ham - Striker
3. Gabriel Zakuani - Peterborough - Centre Back
4. Hogan Ephraim - QPR - Left Mid
5. Michael Kightly - Wolves - Midfield - Winger
6. Steven Gillespie - Colchester - Striker

  • Ask Henry. He already knows ;0)
  • I would love to see Powell give the current squad a go, they deserve the chance to prove themselves in the Championship, then re-assess and strengthen in January... pretty much what Southampton did, I think they only bought Cork and Fox in the Summer

So i think i would just look to bring in a striker and rb for cover - Bradley Orr and Jeffrey Schlupp spring to mind
  • what kind of striker?

deffo think we need left midfield cover, and right back based on the existing squad
  • Tried to be as realistic without being boring. I think we need an added spark in midfield for Championship so with that in mind:

    1) Shelvey - Liverpool (LOAN)
    2) Majewski - Forest - Midfielder
    3) Lee - Southampton - Forward
    4) Tomlin - Peterborough - Forward
    5) Baldock - West Ham - Forward
    6) Smithies - Huddersfield - GK

Having said all this I think our squad is good enough now for Champ level.

Need a 4th centre back to challenge Taylor and Morrison (rather than simply replace Doherty). A right back as competition for Solly. Could perhaps just be one player that can challenge both positions.

A new right midfielder to be first choice. I expect Wagstaff will go and Green needs to improve to step up to that level.

Cover for left midfield, doubt Powell sees the likes of Harriott as ready for the Championship.

A central midfielder. Powell might sign Russell permanently, but there will be plenty of other options in the summer.

Would like to see five strikers, so if they all stay we'd need 1 more.

As for who, no idea, but hopefully similar to last summer - good players from smaller clubs and older players that Powell can get the best out of. The budget will make a big difference, wouldn't be surprised if we start spending that bit more on fees.

    Agree

McDonald at Sheff Utd is out of contract in the summer. Would do a good job in midfield.

Sure Powell has a long list of players already that will get whittled down to a short list in May.
  • don't know who, I'm not paid to scout for Charlton and don't know what CP would be looking for in any specific player but I'd like to see :

    LM
    CM
    RB
    CH
    ST

and if Waggy goes another RM

  • How about these two now they are available?

I admit to knowing nothing about them apart from what I have read here but could be of interest perhaps.

I liked the Stevenage right back/wing back

Think we need a keeper, right back cover, centre back cover, 2 centre midfielders, right midfield, left midfield cover and 1 or 2 new strikers depending on whether both Hayes and Clarke leave.

Sounds a lot but would expect 8-10 to depart in the summer.
  • Luke Freeman

  • I know others have mentioned him but I think Colchester's Anthony Wordsworth is worth a look.
  • Wordsworth wanders too much for my liking.
  • And he is in lonely too.

Was the Stevenage right back not Lawrie Wilson? If so, would be a third player released by us at youth level and then re-signed by Powell? I wouldn't expect more than 5 or 6 signings. Think the squad is reasonably strong and don't think it needs major upheaval for a second consecutive summer.

Surprised we never made a move for him, fits the bill of a young player with potential. Not sure we could get him in the summer though

Looks like Wylde is going Blackpool or Southampton. Left sided player with a very good cross.
  • Much depends on who goes up with us or comes down from the CCC.

If Sheffield United don't make it I'd like Quinn , if MK Dons fail then Gleeson is worth a look .

I've always liked Gary Mcsheffrey at Coventry but he does not fit the model of a young hungry pro .

  • What about Simon Cox from West Brom ?

A fit Liam Trotter. When he's fit, he's the best midfielder in the champ. He can do it all, and then when he's carrying an injury hmmmmmmm, but he can still come alive when he sniffs a goal. Big, physical, stays central, rarely out of position, excellent passing, players bounce off him so doesn't have to tackle just physically wins it, but also excellent and strong in tackle and doesn't need to go to ground, and very good in the air defensively/offensively.

And no to any Millwall fan reading this, I think we have no chance with regards to him.

    Jordan Rhodes up front.

Love McSheffrey, one of my favourite champ players of recent years, but he's had many seasons being shite and has only started playing decent for the first time in 4 odd seasons when Coventry are doomed. Too big in wages, and not certain he'll factor.
  • Saw Gary Roberts is out of contract in the summer from Huddersfield could be a great deal on a free

    Wandered lonely as a cloud?
  • Lets hope he doen't wander into our box and score tonight.
  • I see that Wordsworth was one of our youth players as well.

I've always liked him but read more than once he is a show pony for the TV cameras and doesn't knuckle down when needed

  • What will happen is that Powell and the Scouts will find a player or two that few have heard of and the rest know little about .. Kermorgant anyone? .. Matt Taylor ?
