My dad supports them (his father supporter Millwall, something I never could have done) and I used to support West Ham up until 1982 with Charlton being my second team.
For a couple of years until 1981 we had season tickets in the main stand. The era of Brooking, Bonds, Lampard, Martin, Parkes and Devonshire. My favourite player was Ray Stewart. For some reason didn't go to the FA Cup Final but ran around the garden when Brooking scored. One of the reasons I don't like Arsenal is because of Willie Young bringing down a through on goal Paul Allen.
I had three scarves and the home kit and the white away kit with dirty blue shorts and socks.
Started going to Charlton with my mate and his dad and that was that.
They obviously hold a place in my heart but it was a long time ago.
Probably Arsenal, though that now seems like such a parallel universe that it's impossible. Maybe Dartford.
Dad used to take me Charlton one week, Highbury the next, and Dartford at Watling Street if they were both away - he was principally an Arsenal fan (can't bring myself to use the stupid G word) due to the woolwich connection, but because I found The Valley infinitely preferable for reasons that are important to kids (ie, I could see, didnt get trampled on when a goal was scored and driving from Dartford took a quarter of the time), when the time came to choose it had to be Charlton.
There were times that choice seemed to have been unwise, but the richness of the last twenty years especially I am sure is unrivalled by any other club.
Idle Junior, 15, has been brought up in the same way despite living in Reading, and although he is free to go and watch them with his mates, much prefers the Valley experience to the Madejski, which is akin to watching football at Morrisons. On the way to the Stevenage game we discussed who we'd support if not Charlton, and both decided we probably wouldn't bother with football at all.
West Ham or Spurs. West Ham because a lot of my family are Hammers and Spurs because I was a wee lad when they won the double in 1961 and Jimmy Greaves was my hero.
My mum was always trying me to follow Man U...she had Stuart Pearson knickers!
Grew up a Liverpool fan watching Dalgliesh and was both Charlton and Liverpool fan......until I went to Charlton v Liverpool 1986/7 stood with the Liverpool fans, and realised I didn't want to be there - Charlton all the way since
I was born in Woolwich in 1967. Family emigrated to Australia when i was 2yrs old. Came back when i was 9yrs old. I had a school mate who followed mates in primary school. His Dad were taking his son and me and some friends to West Ham for his Birthday. As I fell out with his son (as I spat at him in the dinner queue (yes I know disgusting), that went to pot. I started to follow Liverpool on the box as they were winning things and had great players including Dalgish, the Kennedys, Steve Heighway, Keegan etc and when Charlton nearly went bankrupt I took the piss out of mby best mate. However went to my first "home" Charlton game at Selhurst when Charlton played Wimbledon and got a 0-0 drawer?? And became a Charlton supprter ever since. I had been to a couple of Charlton games before they got back to the Valley. One was a team who I heard come on Preston boys, tonker toys (or something like that). I saw I think Notts County at Charlton?? But, I do remember seening Garner score for Blackburn at Charlton. I think Charlton were 1 nil up at the time and my friend and i were visiting a mate at Hospital, but we left in time to get in to the Valley at half time for nothing.
Leeds, When my Dad first come over to England from Cyprus he was a glory hunter, his mate who he worked with started taking him to Charlton in the early 70s and he got hooked.
Lived in Derby until the age of 10, so if I'd been into football at the time it would probably have been them. By the time I started to take an interest we were living in Cambridge but my dad's an Addick and once I'd been to my first match I was hooked.
I was a glory hunting Liverpool fan from 77 (watched them in the Cup Final) to 83/84 when my Uncle took me to the Valley for a 3-3 draw with Grimsby, never looked back and feel no affiliation with Liverpool at all now, I have since converted my brother, dad, wife and son and sit with my cousins so a real family affair. Seasons like this make it all worth while, I am sitting in Detroit airport waiting for my flight home after a business weekend and smiling like a cheshire cat, cant wait for Tuesday!
Man U mates were all man u Millwall got a shirt for a birthday Sutton United first game I saw.
Charlton went with my stepdad it changed my life I suddenly realised what was so right about Charlton... They were the little kid that wasnt as big as the others but wasnt fazed and could more than stick up for himself. I loved that.
Due to my gran being Bethnal Green born and raised then West Ham. Was born in Salisbury so maybe Bournemouth or Swindon. Dad's family are from Stafford so perhaps Villa like my cousins.
It's down to my aunt's longterm fella I'm an Addick. He was a regular at the Valley in the 70s and got in there quick to convert me.
That first match back in '51 made such an impression there was no chance of me supporting anyone else. My old man wouldn't have let me anyway. Coming into the ground that terrace looked like a mountain to a five year old: unforgettable!
My Dad was a Charlton fan, and his dad was a Charlton fan, and his dad was a Charlton fan and his dad was Brazilian so probably a Vasco da Gama fan, so Vasco da Gama I guess. Alternatively my Granddad on my mums side was a Pompey fan, and I've grown a small affection for Hull since moving here.

This thread is like how you feel just after you've had a near miss whilst driving.
