Should we be concerned about BWP

  • You know, having seen him play quite a few times for Plymouth and looking at his career stats- he may not start scoring again any time soon.
    Hope he does obviously!
  • I'd have him starting every time as long as the manager doesn't think he needs a rest.
  • But isn't it powells policy to let someone else have a go if a player is below par, but Bradley has been working hard for the team, hmmm...
  • Be very harsh on BWP if he got dropped.
  • Something isn't working with our current front two at the moment and, as good a player as BWP is, out of him and Kermo who would you put on the teamsheet first? For me, it's Kermo. Maybe BWP needs a rest or maybe he needs a kick up the arse to show him that nobody is safe from the axe in this team unless they are playing at their best. We have 5 strikers and I for one would not object to Bradley spending the first hour or so on the bench whilst someone else gets a chance. I think Kermo and Haynes could be a very good pairing so maybe it is time to give that a go?
  • shall we just play him for the rest of the season even if he dosen't get 1 more goal I-SAW? when do you say enough is enough someone else deserves a chance
  • We are still winning
  • We are still winning

Granted but who's to say we wouldn't also be winning if BWP was on the bench and another option had a chance?
  • We are still winning

And it's best to change it before we stop....
  • We are indeed winning at the moment but what if BWP misses 2 or 3 good chances at the weekend and we lose 1-0. I would actually still start him sat, but for me, it would be his last chance to score. I agree with RM, his record isnt that fantastic, this isnt the first time he has struggled to score goals, and he didnt come good either

  • Its a squad game and how could CP justify it to Haynes and Clarke if no matter how much of a slump BWP is in, they aren't going to start? There's a few rose tinted glasses on here at the moment and we can't keep relying on clean sheets.
  • it's not as if he is missing chances, we are not creating any for him. Up to Kermy for a knock on isn't working. It's affecting BWP's game, not his fault. Need to play to HIS strengths.
  • agreed, we are not creating as many and it may be true he is missing stephens, hayes and waggy but he has missed chances - plenty of them that he would have put away earlier in the season. As has been said above - if it's kermo or bwp, i know who i'd stick with.

Kermo is winning 99% of the balls we send up to him but BWP is not on the same wavelength and rarely seems to think that maybe Kermo might win the ball. And he missed a couple of really decent chances at Wednesday.
  • we cant knock his record at all and i think we should stick with him BUT he does do some unbelievably naive things during the game (eg caught offside, poor choices when making runs, casual hold up play, lack of awareness of what his team mates are doing )

id give it 2/3 more games and rest him for 2/3 if he hasnt scored ,ironically his overall play was even poorer earlier in the season but the goals came for him then

so there may be some argument that we dont play to his strengths now ,the conclusion is that our expectations are higher (which they should be) as we are also thinking about playiong at a higher level next year
  • Can't believe he's STILL second top scorer. I think the current drought is just levelling out that incredible purple patch he had. That said it might be worth resting him just to throw Haynes in and see what he can do. Don't think Exeter's defence will deal with his pace well. Plus, if Haynes doesn't have a good game, what team in this league isn't going to be scared when they see Bradley Wright-Phillips fully fit and about to come on?
  • BWP is hardly unproven so as long as we are winning and he is putting the effort in , we continue as we are I say. Haynes will have opportunities if we have injuries or as a sub and it will be up to him how he grasps them but whils I suspect the drought may be irritating BWP, Powell has been in the game long enough not to be worried at all.

In fact, as a manager I would be reassured - it seemed early doors that BWP was a key player for us with his goals but the side have proven that we don't rely unduly on that quality.
  • I think part of the drought is he is often doing the work that a balanced team could help with.

For example BWP does more back tracking than when he was just banging in goals. Therefore it's taking more effort to work opportunities.

Gotta say green had a perfect opportunity to roll the ball to BWP but shot instead (the right footer)

I feel as green has become more selfish Bradders has become more selfless, think about it!
  • I think that when the goals dry up, a striker like BWP pobably feels he has to put more into other areas - of course his confidence is a little low- he scores so many instictive goals- but it will come back with his next and that is probably only a game or two away.
  • He may not have scored for a while, but looking at LL's stats he has nine assists so it's not all bad, the goal will come and when it does I am sure more will follow

  • Sometimes when a striker goes through barren spell they try too hard to score. I think BWP has been a little guilty of that but totally understandable. I have no fear that his next goal is coming soon and he will then carry on where he left off. The man is a born poacher!

spoke to bwp after the game on saturday and said your'll be scoring again soon and he's reply was hopefully im going to keep plugging away its just a matter of time before he scores he was great against fulham and sheffield wed but part of he's game is to draw the defenders to allow the midfield to get up the pitch more + agree that when stephens comes back in the side it will help him start scoring again
  • Poor bloke must have had a bad neck saturday every ball to him came out of clouds from a big hoof upfield. He needs something to work with and last couple not really had it. In my book still automatic selection every week
  • It's now on the O/S, (although we knew anyway), BWP has had his contract automatically extended to June 2013, now that he has made 25 League appearances this season. It was set up that way due to his knee problem & initially we didn't want to give a longer contract.

PS His lack of goals are somewhat due to the fact that Hayes is no longer setting some of them up for him.
  • Good news for him and us. Now hope he gets us a goal or two on Sat!
  • Don't think it's all down to him personally. Even though we've been getting the results lately, can't anyone else notice that we haven't as a team been as fluid? Earlier in the season, we were like a poor mans Barcelona, pinging the ball around. Something has changed in our play lately and BWP has unfortunately become a victim of this.

Still, as long as the wins continue, no need to panic.

News Broken at Bromley Addicks back in September as you know CE as you were there : - )

Maybe a weight off his shoulders and he'll score to shut up the Exeter fans.

On Hayes, he did set up BWP but BWP hit quite a few goals when Kermorgant got into the side as well. I think with Jackson back and if Wiggins can get forward more BWP will get more chances and that will result in more goals.
  • Great news about his contract, hopefully he'll get some goals to go with it on Saturday.
  • play him sat and then rest him tues and let haynes start v bury
