I think his attitude changed when he went to Spurs, was pretty pants, barely played and was then being touted around to the likes of Wigan and Hull if I recall correctly. He's settled in well at Fulham realising his days as a to drawer Prem player were behind him and has done well as the fulcrum of their midfield in general. Still booed him tho. Left the club in pretty acrimonious circumstances.
Murphy started well for us but I don't think he got over the fact that Liverpool / Benitez didn't want him. If he'd got over this issue and stopped sulking then he could have contributed more to Charlton. Personally I think Bent and Smertin were more important players to us that season. Smertin was a huge loss.
The man with an arse the size of two small planets was on £37K a week. I also heard that Parker was offered £20k a week whilst with us and went to Chelski for £35K.
I agree with a lot of what was said about Murphy, another talent that simply went missing when the pressure was on, a bit like Jensen.....the difference is I really liked Claus, whereas Murphy ought to have taken his move and kept his mouth shut.
Murphy deserved all of it. His wife didn't but unfortunately when you become a "celebrity" by piggybacking on someone else's fame and then get involved playing at that lifestyle and making comments that are inappropriate and not your business then you end up making yourself a part of it.
Some of these wage estimates are totally over the top.
People on here with impeccable inside connections have stated that even during the 06/07 season that the most we were paying our top earners was around 15K per week.
Talk of 37K per week for JFH is crazy, no way we were paying a single player 2 miilion per year, our TV income was only around 20 million, probably less.

Beg to differ there matey. Think she probably deserved it more than him. Might be wrong but I heard that she was quite instrumental in getting him to leave as "lil ol Charlton" didn't fit her wag image.

Murray admitted that he expanded the wage bill significantly to bring in JFH and for Dowie's new signings. I think he even said that JFH was the first charlton player to earn more than 30k a week ever.

I would be very interested if you could provide a quote for that statement from Murray or at least the place where he is supposed to have said it.
People on here who were/are very close to Murray/Varney have shot down this 30K per week stuff before and said that the top earners were on 15-20K maximum.
I just don't believe we paid 30K per week to JFH who was on a free from Boro and did not exactly have every Premiership club chasing him.
The real problem was that we had far too many players on the top end of that wage scale - most of whom were shite - and we could not afford that.
Rightly or wrongly Murphy was unhappy at the club and this undoubtably played a part in him leaving. It was I think, less of a blow than losing Parker but a blow all the same. I was very upset with him at the time but it is all water under the bridge now - you have to forgive and forget. Booing him when he plays against us is fair enough but abusing his wife with a young child in earshot is pathetic. I won't defend that sort of behaviour and wish to disassociate myself with it as most right thinking Charlton fans would also.
Why does supporting a football team mean that you don't have to have basic standards?

To be fair she was a successful actress when they met. I would go as far as to say that she was more famous outside of the football world.
As I understand it her family's wealth put Premier League footballers to shame too.
None of this takes away from the fact she seemed to struggle with beng married to a Charlton player after she bagged a Liverpool player, but she wasn't writing a column for a national newspaper because she married Danny Murphy.
What I find obnoxious is her attempts, on twitter, to suggest that the perception we have of him would be totally different if we knew the truth about what happened, then proceeding to say that twitter is not the place to tell us.
Just hold your hands up - they thought he was better than Charlton and discovered that he wasn't and ended up at Fulham, a club that are about the same size as we were when he left.
I've no idea of the actual wages of some, but if you added the guaranteed signing on fee, appearance bonus onto a basic wage, I can easily see how you get an inflated salary like JFH. His signing on fee for a free transfer would not have been insignificant.
As for Murphy, decent player but always got the vibe he felt he was better than us. His heart never really seemed to be in the club, and just never really bonded with the supporters.
Then when he left, Curbs was quite scathing of him and at the time most of us would have jumped off a cliff if Curbs said so, so I think that compounded it.
Our average finishing position over the last 5 years was above spurs
I mean that will never happen again
And it was still not exciting enough . I mean who wants to be in the premiership where even run of the mill teams like fulham have decent internationals.......

If we do progress to those dizzy heights ever again I would be 100% behind a wage cap for our players.

Even Curbs caught wind of it:
