Wonder if anyone can remember when we played liverpool in the 90's (think it was a league cup eve game pre-premier days, but not certain) and some idiot scouser was sitting in E block. He jumped up screaming when they scored and 3 seconds later had a dozen geezers piling into him. I was the steward just behind him and just thought "what a knob. You're on your own". :-)
I remember that Scouser, pretty sure that was in the F block- Think that was the coca-cola cup in around 97? He was sitting in the seat 2 rows in front of me and the fella who took him out launched over the 2 rows, like a missile.
It was deffo F block as he was in front of me and NLA and the blow that took him out also left the stewards that were removing him in a pile on the stairs.
Leroy i remember the 4-4 game , but had completely forgotten Sweaty getting sent off.
The only game where I left before the final whistle by the time me, Bolton Mick, little Mick and Anglo-Asian Cliff got to the Oak the realisation hit us. Gutted to this day. . . .
Same here. Back of the F Block, No need to sit down and loads of atmosphere
Dunno about no need to sit down, I had no chance to sit down. Even in Row B I had to stand for most of the game cos the one-man argument in front of me was stood up all the time. Good old Irish Kevin. Whatever the crowd was happy with, he thought was a disgrace and vice versa
used to sit right behind the goal row a, there was a bloke still see him around now and then, grey long hair tash, some of you may know him, when we were ever on the big match itvs endsliegh league he would sit there with his handheld tv watching the screen for the whole 90 mins without looking up..
some italian team (parma perhaps) used the ground to train before there uefa cup final at the wembley, north was opened went along with mates they were selling pasta in the ground!! anyway they were practising free kicks one went astray and walloped this kid right in the mush.. the player came over gave him a ball and rubbed his head then as he walked back you could see his shoulders shaking with laughter.
remember playing grimbsy, some guy in a trench coat for 90 mins giving ivano bonnetii dogs abuse for the whole game in italian, very weird but very funny.
best tho has to go to the tango man when we beat sheff weds in the cup, he was allowed in the coverd end and came around shaking hands with everyone, shook his hand and will never forget that.
I used to love the F block! In the back bit behind the walkway, first row infront of the barriers. There was about 8 seats there but we'd always get about 12 of us in ha ha
Agreed it was good under there and the fact that it sounded loud to us is all that matters i guess but whether it sounded that loud to the rest of the ground is debatable. Have moved a lot closer to the front of the upper tier now - closer to the action anda way from the drum and agree that somehow, although its a great looking stand, the noise generated by the acoustics of the south stand is far better. Can't see that there's a solution though. Maybe a single tier stand at the south end if we ever develop it or is it just wrong to move the home end to the south?

I remember someone doing this in game prob about 95/96 agaisnt WBA 0v0 got to be the same guy.

I remember that. John Barnes was playing pretty much anywhere he wanted. I think it was Shaun Newton whose last-minute effort span wide of the post and sent us to a replay/ second leg where we got beaten? Might be multiple memories melding into one though.
North Stand, F Block, 1998-2003 or whatever. Best CAFC period of my short life. Even when things went bad, the crowd made it special. The E vs. F block singing. Awesome.
One of my favourite moments in the old F block was on the last day of the season when we got into the play offs and found out that Millwall had gone down to division 2 . Like a carnival atmosphere. 96 I think?
yes, we beat wolves and they lost away to ipswich and to add insult to injury they had to sit on some unsecured seats at portman road and then got into a clearly decrepid train as it seemed to fall apart around them.
One roar I remember other than the obvious (first game back, Ipswich PO Semi, any game in the old terraced covered end etc) was David Whytes last minute free kick v Brentford in the cup in about 1996. Absolutely deafening, like Motorhead turned up to 11,..
My Mrs was parked up near the pickwick pub waiting to pick me up after the game , asked me what happened as she could hear the roar from there .
North stand E-Block row V , alas shift work has put paid to that .

They drew 0-0 at ipswich. Ipswich were the ones who were challenging us for the last play off spot, we had to beat Wolves to secure it. We only drew 1-1 so we had our hearts in our mouths, after the match when they were reading the final scores out they read out ipswich 0 (queue huge cheering) millwall 0. So millwall not only failed to win to stay up, but by holding them to a draw they put us into the play offs! Absolute glory.
Shame it ended with Palace doing the double over us in the play offs.
i used to sit in the f block, 1st row in front of the barriers, the man utd 3 vs 3 was probably the loudest crowds i'd ever heard, also a couple of night games in the championship..... the game against stockport? where andy hunt got a hat trick was pretty special seeing as he never scored at the valley that year
One of the best atmospheres i remember in the Covered End was when we played Palace in the anglo-italian, quite soon after the return. There was only about 3,500 in the ground but for some reason the Covered End made a massive noise that night.
Night games always seemed more special.
Remember playing Tranmere one night and their keeper Eric Nixon was doing every timewasting trick under the sun to wind up the crowd. Covered End was going bonkers. Think we come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, and he got absolute pelters.
And there was nothing better than when half of F-Block seemed to be leaning over the edge of the stand to give a player the 'w**ker' chant when taking a corner.
Miss that stand, miss that era, miss how we were as fans then.
Back in the old North stand there used to be songs about every event of the match- from the "who are ya?" when someone took a corner to "it's nice to know your here" when the away crowd piped up. Those days seem to have gone

I remember that game well. Joined the pitch invasion at the final whistle and shared a cheeky herbal ciggie with some Wolves fans on the train back to London Bridge. Ah those were the days. . . . .
If we hadnt got promoted do we still think the Covered End would still have stayed how it was,
Definitely, I remember when people would comment on how good the atmosphere was at The Valley, we also had home fans in the Jimmy Seed back then. The new Covered End has killed the atmosphere when the idea was to improve it.
Took a Palace supporting mate to a home League Cup 1st round game against Ipswich, think it was start of 97/98. Pretty low key affair, only about 6,500 there - my mate couldn't believe how good the atmosphere was compared to Palace! There was always a decent atmosphere, even for dismal home defeats to the likes of Grimsby.

Exactly - I'm not as offended as some by the Addams Family Song, more the fact that it's sung every week regardless of where the oppo come from. Used to have a different chant for prety much every part of the country.
Favourite memory for me would be the Wolves match mentioned above or the Ipswich play-off semi-final, with an honourable mention for Martin Pringle's stoppage time equaliser against Newcastle.

This thread has proper made me realise the price we paid for premiership football,
If we hadnt got promoted do we still think the Covered End would still have stayed how it was,
If yes then thats a heafty price to pay , i cant remember if there were plans to redevelop before that first stint in the premier league
Who flipping started this thread
