When the North stand got a second tier

edited December 2011 in General Charlton
Before the North Stand got it's second tier all the singers/ drum used to be in the E and the F block.
When the second tier was put on all of that same crowd seemed to go up there. How did that happen, did a couple of people make the choice. Did you discuss it before or more of a coincidence? Always wondered how that happened.

  • The club basically said in programmes etc we want the singing section upstairs as it'll be better for the acoustics apparently, and so they followed. Not much more to it I believe
  • When the 2nd tier was added and season tickets were put on sale, the club indicated a "main singing area"  as I recall.
  • the club requested that if you want to be part of the loudness choose block J, block H or if theres nothing left block L
  • singing area classic
  • Perfect, I didn't know that.
    Cheers

my ticket was for the E block we changed to north upper J as the leg room in the lower became lesser, well worth it.

    I fecking loved it
  • Agreed nla.

Someone went round with a seating plan for the new bit to try and get everyone in the same place. First game up there turned out the club had double sold at lot of these places, and we all got split up. My group got shunted out to M block.

Looking at the back of J and H block now, I think it is only John the Rat and his crowd who are still up there and used to be from E or F block. Most of the back of J and H block would have been about 7 when the upper was built.

Used to love it downstairs when Mark used to take his drum walk about up and down the aisles. Night games in the old covered end could he electric, even if the noise did mainly get kept in by the roof.

Is that why there are microphones hanging from the ceiling, to enhance the noise?
  • It was a cracking little stand, back then it sort if just fitted our club,

The atmosphere was brilliant it was tight and compact, it was the way e and the best block which of course was f could banter across

Mark and his drum didn't annoy me like it seems to now

The fact we were so close to the pitch, you seemed ontop of the goalie, the players taking the corners

Even down to the players going into the portacabins ,who could hear you and react to you

The rubbish little bar at the bottom of the stand

That was my match day and I always looked forward to every single game

  • We are the F block, we are the F block, We are the F block Covered end. The old North was ten times better than the new. Progress? Pah.
  • The atmosphere is certainly a lot worse.

Only when the old boys came back! A bit like us getting Chris back!! :)

  • One roar I remember other than the obvious (first game back, Ipswich PO Semi, any game in the old terraced covered end etc) was David Whytes last minute free kick v Brentford in the cup in about 1996. Absolutely deafening, like Motorhead turned up to 11,..
  • The 3-3 game against Man Utd was my last great memory of a single tear Covered End, still a highlight of those Premiership years, when John Robinson hooked in that equaliser the place exploded.

your not wrong is up there as my favorite covered end moment
  • The good old days when the North Stand only had one level, the atmosphere used to be awesome , can remember a friday night game on the tele , can't remember who against but the noise was deafening!

Ferguson had taken off Keane and Beckham thinking they were done.

    Great game.

Used to love the song - 'There's only 4 David Whites'!

I think your right. Club said the acoustics would be better up there but as i said in another thread, it didnt make it any better. Its prob better making new stands the same as the South/Jimmy seed stand.

Same here. Back of the F Block, No need to sit down and loads of atmosphere
The 3-3 game against Man Utd was my last great memory of a single tear Covered End, still a highlight of those Premiership years, when John Robinson hooked in that equaliser the place exploded.

It was proper electric in there that day, coming back like that and the way Robinson ran away and celebrated..... that's what we are all CAFC fans for

  • The way robbo celebrated the goal was like all charlton fans were celebrating at that moment

    Legend and what a game!
  • I remember Newcastle in the cup as being particularly f***ing awesome - When Kins scored it felt like the roof was coming off. Norwich 4-4 draw was the bollocks as well. Kins and Twinkle with identical free kicks after Sweaty Balmer got sent off and they went one up from the resulting free kick - then pineapple head and Big Carl getting us back to 4-4 at the end after they'd mullered us most of the second half. Also, bizarrely, remember getting beat 3-1 by Grimsby on a freezing weeknight (Super Clive hat trick for them I think) and hearing some bloke behind me start up with "VALLEY FLOYD ROOOAAA... BOLLOCKS!" as they went 2 up. Never heard so many people burst out laughing after conceding :)
