I thought he made too many unforced errors but could also show glimpses of qulaity and as has been mentioned - he never hid. Now a manager might look at that and try to focus on the strengths and work on the weaknesses and as a result have a right back who could easily play Championship level. But no chance of that if the bloke is going to be put under the sort of pressure he was- being booed before he started a game
Anybody who thinks confidence doesn't play a massive part in football knows knothing about the game so why any Charlton fan would want to boo the lad and damage his confidence will always be beyond me. Fair enough not rating him but he was playing with fear as Curb it perfectly described. He had to leave as it wasn't going to happen, but I hope we have learned something from this too. When I say we- I mean a small minority. I'm glad he has gone because I think we need to sweep thses issues under the carpet and Farncis was always going to cause morale problems due to these ars**les. I hope he does well at Bournemouth and suspect he will. I pride myself in spotting a good player and despite his real and significant failings- I thnk there is one in him.
If you think there is a good player there you are a fool, sorry but he was woeful from day one.The fact we signed two players from a team that was relegated to the fourth division shows how low we got.We should have been signing the best players in this league which we done in the summer.I wish him no malice he just weren't good enough, but please don't give me there is a good player in there because there isn't.
There is a bloody good footballer in there - just a shame he never really showed his full potential. There were some games where he looked the part but he was never popular with the majority of fans so was fighting a losing battle from the start.
I wish him all the best - seemed a really nice chap and hope it works out well for him
if he has a good first game or two for bournemouth, he'll be fine and be a good league one player. its all down to his first touch of his first game for bournemouth...
He got promoted from this division with Southend so he must have had something.
For whatever reason it didn't work out and either he was no good or just didn't show what he had. Not as if any other players who were "worst player ever" haven't left and done OK with a different club or vice versa.
Nowhere near the worst player to play for Charlton. He just happened to be in a really bad side and was one of the only players to try to step up to plate. It just so happens he wasn't good enough and his distribution was woeful at times. The blame for that must fall on the manager ( or the coach). Treated badly by a lot of fans in my opinion as some of the comments on this thread highlight . Good luck Simon Francis.
Like McCormack he couldn't handle the pressure of playing for us. Don't think he had a good enough football brain either, both defensively and on the ball.

I can't see how it's the manager's fault that his distribution was woeful at times. If he can't pass a ball 10 yards that's not a manager's fault (other than signing someone who can't pass the ball 10 yards).

That's exactly what i mean. He signed a player who couldn't pass.
I saw him out running one day at Oxshot, where the Chelsea players hang out. Wish him well. Pretty good dashing down the wing but gave the ball away too much for my liking.Think he will end up being an attacking wing half type of player. Surely too loose to be a defender?

I agree, although on that basis any player who is not good enough is not at fault. It's always the manager's fault for signing them. I'll have to ponder that.

Me, too. I am quite happy to blame Parky for signing Francis (and every other excuse for a Charlton footballer he recruited - happily almost all gone, with Doc and Benson reportedly soon to complete the clear-out). But does that mean Curbs was a crap manager for signing Marcus Bent , to whom no blame attaches for being a dysfunctional footballer and an even more dysfunctional human being?

He's the manager - he ultimately is to blame. You cant blame Francis for trying to better himself for signing for us. Sure , he is the one actually making the mistakes but if you buy TV that is not broken but is substandard in quality you only have yourself to blame for not doing your homework or in Parkinsons case , scouting.
People majorly exaggerated how bad he was as is the norm on here but still he should be nowhere near our first team this season. Good luck to him. Think someone should try him at right mid
He was player of the season in a relegated team. The less charitable folk on here will say that only shows how bas Southend were that year, but it does suggest that there was a reasonable footballer in there - at least at third tier level.

Get in there the season just keeps getting better and better
Get rid of all the dross and start again,
real progress being made
He wasn't the worst player we signed from Southend in that close-season.
To think identifying talent was seen as Parky's strength.
I wish him all the best - seemed a really nice chap and hope it works out well for him

But I have to say, that in the 40 years I've supported Charlton, he is probably in the worst 11 of all time. Not his fault, but it is a fact.
However, his biggest fault was passing the ball to the opposition from a 10 yard range when unchallenged, so surely he can rectify that ?
Start with the simple things Simon & work on the others like concentration & keeping in position.
If you get the basics right, you've got the ability to succeed. IMO
Never good enough for us. Not his fault.
Might work out for him at Bournemouth. Somehow doubt it.
All the best to him, think he'll be good for Bourney
Dear old Parky. There is no justice. One point off relgaton to the Blue Square, while Plonker Pardew is just one point behind God !

So theoretically, he fitted into the team quite well?

Good news for all concerned .
Good luck , Simon.
