Yes the 2 late goals took the gloss of a little.but you won't see a better goal all season than our 5th. Tonight all addicks remember we're charltron athletic we're top of the league.
Incredibly we had to move early in the second half as beside and behind us people were still managing to moan. Incredible!
Jesus, Floyd..! When I picked up the half -time score deep in the Czech countryside, I thought I'll post a sarky comment about whether anyone was booing. But I thought it was too ridiculous to even get a cheap laugh. And now I read this. What were they actually moaning about, for heaven's sake?
A sliced clearance from Hamer brought stereo abuse from two groups of middle aged men. In the first half, when we scored the first, it was amazing to hear the, ''yeah, but its our first attempt on goal'' routine. So many people need to get a life, really. ''Dreadful distribution'' ANY time a pass wasnt inch perfect from defence, one git even moaned at the sublime flick (which immediately led to our 5th and a chance to escape in the celebrations to a different row!).
Last time I saw us beat Preston 5-2 we were struggling to avoid relegation fron division 2 and a 38 (or thereabouts) year old veteran called Cliff Holton gave a masterclass and got the rest of the team playing.
Moving on more than 40 years I went into this game worried and didn't feel anymore relaxed once we kicked off as Preston looked good going forward and seemed to have the midfield early doors. Morrison and Taylor looked solid though and we gradually got a foothold into the game with Wiggins and Jackson combining well and Hollands and Hughes taking over midfield.
The great thing about the first half was how clinical we were when we got forward and created chances. How nice to come out for a second half relaxed enough to enjoy it! Inevitably we took our feet off the gas a bit yet Hollands' goal was the best of the match and an excellent well worked team goal. Credit where it's due, Preston's second goal was a little bit special too the way he brought it down, turned and shot almost in one movement before Hamer could move.
How nice to be able to enjoy the comedy of Jase playing left wing and trying to display trickery in the corner and getting it hopelessly wrong! That's the luxury a 4 or 5 goal cushion gives you.
It didn't matter in the overall scheme of things but I thought Smith was extremely fortunate to only get a yellow for that challenge on Solly a minute or two in. In fact I reckon he'd have walked had it been later in the match. I also don't understand how the ref could give the penalty for bringing down Kermit yet not either send off or at least yellow card the keeper who was last man yet Hamer seemed to be booked for nothing in particular.
Minor gripes though. 17 played 40 points need I say more?
A great afternoon's entertainment. We took Preston apart, barely breaking sweat. They were, as has been said, the best team until we scored and then broke apart like a sandcastle kicked over by a comic book bully. It seems to me that there were two big differences between them and us:
1. Ability to recover from minor errors: Several times in the first half we had little miss-kicks and stumbles on the ball. Every time we worked as a team and recovered almost instantly. Several times things didn't go for them and you could see it really affected them badly. Their defence looked like the proverbial rabbit in the headlights. They were beaten in their own heads.
2. The vision and touch throughout our team that I am certain is second to none in this league. Once into our stride, our passes seemed to always find their man. Not just little taps to the next guy either; long balls right across the pitch were inch perfect. Everyone passed and moved as if centrally choreographed. At times it was like the whole team had a collective vision of exactly what was going to happen and when. Preston had nothing at all to counter this.
We're into November and there hasn't been anything to moan at this season! What's going on!
Actually thought Preston started the better until we scored, how there keeper didn't even get booked for the penalty I don't know. He was awful think he might have been their loan keeper they signed a few days ago.
MotM for me was Wiggins the bloke just gets better and better. Shame we couldn't get a clean sheet but it means nothing, plus you very rarely see a 5-0 scoreline, just natural that people drop off and lose concentration.
2 tough league games now, but we are in a excellent position.
We are the best team in the league- today was a big day because I think supporters of the top clubs are strting to appreciate that now. You get a moment in the season when the realisation hits and I think this is it.
Yes, we are the best team in the league. At the moment though everyone is still going along with the hype about the unbeaten run that Uddersfilled are on. I believe the 28th will be the day that realisation hits that we are the best.
Just can't believe how the goals keep right on coming. What a fantastic bunch of players SCP has moulded together into a real team. Everyone one of them proud to wear the shirt - no mercenaries for us this season....
And all those smiling faces walking away from The Fortress Valley. I'm betting most of them will want to come again.
Arrived home to be met at the door by grandson, Billy saying " Nanny !! Charlton 5 Preston 2 !! " as though he was telling me something I didn't know . Bless !
What a great place the Valley is nowadays; great to see more people, better football, optimism tinged with realism, noone taking anything for granted (well you cant can you), the deepening of confidence within the team (except for Hamer today) and the increasing desire to really win by big margins. Wiggins and Kermorgent are two very fine players , classy in every sense and my big hope is that these stay with us next season as they are potential premiership players (so are the others but less so) Powell is not only adept at finding good players, forging a team but also instilling a good team work ethic and it is this that Brighton and Norwich had. I am going to Brentford in two weeks because come what may I will be proud to be supporting Charlton and the way that they play.Let not Charlton be arrogant and condescending when playing the opposition let them continue to be focused on the work in hand for the full 90 and bring on Huddersfield (unbeaten); this will be the seminal moment of our season so far Big smiles all round .
thoroughly entertaining game and a great all round team performance. Wiggins was my MOM and is getting better and better. CP has assembled a great bunch of lads with a great deal of skill but with dtermination and a never say die attitude. Hughes has given Hollands licence to get forward more and it's no coincidence that he now has three in four games. Kermy has come in and formed a good partnership with BWP and is really impressing me. Taylor and Morrison are excellent. Only worry for me is Hamer sometimes who in the first half was slow off his line a couple of times and was slicing kicks everywhere. But that is a small gripe. The two late goals took the gloss off slightly but that is being a it churlish. Well done CP keep up the good work.
Don't think Hamer was that bad- dealt with a few crosses well -which I thought was a weakness- for me he is a player for the future but one that is more than good enough for were we are at the moment. Has all the ingredients IMO. We need to have a bit of faith and support the bloke!
Quick moan about the ref. Again. Just watched the football league show and 2 keepers get straight reds for similar challenges to Arestidous challenge on Kermorgant which doesn't even warrant a talking too. Then Hamer gets a booking for booting the ball into the stand? And you wonder why we have a got at refs these days!
Are the goals shown on sky sports news at all? I've been watching for a while. I wanted to see number five again.
Missed the last home game but glad I was there to witness that. What a great feeling. And as said it didn't even feel like we were really motoring, just that every time we had an attempt we scored.

Hugely enjoyable match all round, with superb support from the CE choir.
Huddersfield's unbeaten run? Bring it on.
TV games have done it early, it appears.
Thought they defended like a (bad) pub team.
42% automatics 58% the disappointment of play off stress
