BWP rumours

edited November 2011 in General Charlton

So, several sites including the official site, today have posted rumours about several clubs interested in BWP when the transfer window opens. Surely we dont want to sell him as priority is to get promoted this season, surely getting promoted to the Championship would be more profitable than selling him for about £2m. Charlton board do not sell him, keep him. You stated you built the new team around him, and it is working fanatastic, so do not change the set up!

  • There's always going to be speculation about a quality goalscorer and if one of the prem london clubs in particular came in for him it would be a struggle to hold onto him. That's life and we'll see just how serious the new board are because i'm sure they won't want to sell him but every player has their price and an eye on their wages.
  • People are also trying to unsettle/derail us , we need to ignore it , he'll stay , Rhodes will be off instead.
  • i worry that this story could have some legs in it. we all believe it and sing it out each week, 'he's better than shaun'. well if he really is then like his brother, he should be playing premier league football and earning premier league wages. i'm afraid we're now a lower league club and holding on to any talent is going to be tough, not necessarily due to the club needing to, more so that the players ambition may take then elsewhere. But, Bradley, if you're reading this. 'PLEASE STAY AS BEING A FANS FAVOURITE HERE AT CHARLTON IS BETTER THAN MOST PLACES, JUST ASK YOUR BOSS!!'
  • I think everyone is making a big fuss out of nothing. He's got a contract, he's said he's happy and we're top of the league.

Until someone bids a couple of million for him that's not going to change
  • I like Bradley even more after reading that SLP article.
  • I think he'll stay to the end of the season and if we get promoted he'll stay on. If we don't, I think he'll be off to a Champ club.

If you've followed The Addicks for as long as I have you just know that there's every possibility that he could go in January....it was ever thus and will be so for ever more.

Until we get a board of directors who put their foot down and say NO to our star players transfer demands then we will 'forever' be what we are and always have been.......................a 'significant' selling club.

I've always had the dream that someday, before I die, that I'll hear our board turn on one of these errant players and say.......... "No pal, you're staying put and that's that."

We've bottled it time and time and time again for decades.

    Dream on everyone dream on!

  • I think BWP realises that his best chance of getting to the top is with us. If we stall, yes his ambitions will overtake ours but I suspect we wont and he s going to best flourish where he is happiest. No way he will be sold in January.

Mutley I hope you're correct..........but I'd call it 50/50 to be honest.......depending of course on the money offered.
  • I think,at the moment,we'd be able to match wages that most championship sides would offer.
The prem would be a different proposition but don't think any of them would come sniffing
  • if someone in the PL takes a punt on him then, depending who it is, he may well go. If it's a Championship club he'll stay.
  • I suppose everybody has a price but for BWP to go I think it would have to be a silly offer.

I can't really think of many instances in our history where it has worked like that Muttley.

For BWP to go, it would take him hearing about some solid interest from somewhere he fancies, kicking up a fuss and saying he won't play if we don't let him go, and then us trying to get as respectable a fee for him as possible.

Agreed Mutley......but as we well know there are some silly folk in the world of footbal with even sillier amounts of money!

And we know that if BWP didn't have dodgy knees we would never been able to sign him in the first place.  And those same knees will put off a lot of Clubs making a huge offer.

Bar Man City and Chelsea who isn't a selling club in England?  All that changes is that we move higher and lower along the food chain.

Will worry about if when and if it happens. Life and football seasons are too short to do anything else.
  • I reckon that behind every rumour like this there is a a greedy bast**d of an agent looking for a pay-day!
  • Of course every club is a selling club...well just about.

But even you Ben must admit that Charlton most likely 'take the biscuit' when it comes to selling their best players.....and just as infuratingly more often than not at times when we are well placed to move forward as a club and raise our profile.

As for you worrying about it when and if it happens, I'm afraid I've lost count of the times I've done just that....and each time it get's no easier I can tell you, in fact it get's worse.

I bet if you went on the equivalent of Charlton Life for every other club outside the biggest clubs all the fans would say that their club was as bad if not worst for selling players.

We just see our sales.    So when in the summer we bought Wiggins and Hollands from Bournemouth did we care?   Or Green from Dagenham?  Or Stephens and Evina from Oldham?

And remember how we got BWP in the first place.  He didn't come through our youth team.  We "nicked" him from a bankrupt Plymouth who desperately needed the cash for their top scorer.

I've often though that myself.....but I 'honestly' have the notion that we above all 92 clubs can claim to have sold the most significant number of star players over the last 50 to 60 years.

Starting of course with Leary and Firmani.

  • Hollands and Evina were free transfers so their clubs were hardly 'selling' them.

thought it started with Fred Whitlow myself

OK, but still lost their services when they would have preferred to keep them
  • It's been said before but here goes .............

Steve Kavanagh with Michael Slater agreeing, said that he was 99.5% confident that BWP will stay with us, as we have an option to extend it.

    Bromley addicks meeting 06/09/2011.

Sorry SoundAs, but I think that is most likely not true. Although it can't easily be proved.

Well I'd say we were right up there...certainly in the top 3 or 4.........I'm talking now about real quality players that went on to become household names with big clubs.
  • Just from the top of my head- Crewe must have sold more - would probably find we are a long way off the top of a selling club list.

I was going to say that, but couldn't be bothered.
