Timewasting

  • Very poor ref.  Having spoken to the keeper twice he didn't have the courage to follow up with a yellow.  Demonstrated that he was a complete bottler and there would be no consequences.  That said I thought Tranmere were a good side and played well.  Showumni had more deck-ball than either of our strikers.  I understand why they'd waste time, it's down to the ref to deal with it.  The penalty was like watching a class of kids acting up in front of a student supply teacher who was about to cry.

I wouldn't mind so much but every time we do it, we get caught out - who can forget the farsical short corner against Scunny.

  • Any time wasting that happens in the valley is partly our own fault this season, we had the choice of one ball or multi ball where all the ball boys and girls have a ball to throw to the player whilst they retrive the ball thus keeping the game flowing, we said no to this which was odd bearing in mind how cp wants us to play.
It was actually the Tranmere game last season that proved what a disaster the multi-ball system was. The ref came and spoke to our bench several times about there being more than one ball on the pitch and he must have blown up for it 7-8 times at least.
.. and on at least 3 times it was a Tranmere player or the manager that put the ball a few yards back on the pitch after the multi-ball was back in play.  It was the pathetic officials that couldn't see this happening that got it stopped for that match.
  • Tony Roberts is the worst time waster I've seen whenever we've played Dag & Red
He is a character though will give him that
  • I think it's time in the professional game at least to rethink the whole issue of time keeping. There is a fourth official, he should be in charge of time keeping. In studies it's shown that the ball is in play for an average of 60mins. So make the game an hour, as soon as a foul is committed or the ball goes out of play then the clock stops, it doesn't restart until the ball is next played. It would then be practically important to waste time, only to delay the game.

Timing in professional football is a joke. You'll have a first half with no incidents of any note, no goals and no substitutions and 1 minute is added on. In the second half you can have 3 goals, 6 substitutions, time wasting, injuries, whatever you like, and typically it'll be 3 or 4 minutes added. At the very least it should always be 1min per goal and 30secs per substitution.

  • Well repugnant as it may sound, if we agree that substitutions take 30seconds, then why shouldn't sky squeeze in a quick ad (like cricket does between overs) instead of us watching some overpaid prat stroll as slowly as possible across the pitch?

I've been saying that for years. But the various authorities seem reluctant to do anything that will make the game less prone to cheating or to mistakes from officials.
  • Unfortunately controversy fills column inches and satellite airtime, so anything that makes the game less controversial doesn't appeal to sky or any of the printed press.
  • We do it as well - its only frustrating when we're losing. We're quite happy with our keeper doing it if we are winning!  :)

I'm certainly not happy with it, whoever does it.

  • I'd also like to see play ending only when the ball has gone out of play - not a foul or anything like that but for a goal kick or throw in or corner. 9 times out of 10 the team that wants the game to end will just welly it out but that 1 time out of 10 could be good for a team chasing the game.
  • I agree with this, rugby has it right. Once time is up you should keep going until the ball goes out of play

Really? I dont believe you would want our players to promptly get the ball back in play when we are 1.0 up and under the cosh. It's normal gamesmanship. Not saying it's right, but it's a fact of life.

    That's not what I said.
If you read this thread properly you'll see that I've already said what I think is reasonable and what is not. I've already stated that I think doing it for the last few minutes is understandable and a valid tactic, but that my issue is with excessive timewasting.
  • There's a bit of difference between wasting the final few minutes and wasting the entire second half, which is what Tranmere have been doing every time I've seen them in recent years.
