Charlton Ath v Exeter City 10 September 2011 - Preview, views and news

edited September 2011 in General Charlton
Still unbeaten after 6 games and third in the table but that's still not quite enough for some.

Drawing at home to a club the size of Sheffield Wednesday can be rationalised.  Failing to beat a struggling Exeter team will be seen in a totally different light by many, in particular those waiting for a slip up from Chris Powell on which to pounce.

Especially as this year Exeter have started badly. Their only win in the league has been over struggling Chesterfield. On the road they have a solitary point from a 0 - 0 draw at Stevenage leaving them one place above the relegation dotted line.  Home banker then?

Yet, we at Preview Towers all remember that it was the home game v The
Grecians were the wheels came off the bus last season.  25k+ inside the
Valley stands but no one in a red shirt turned up on the pitch. 1 - 3 to
the Devonshires.

It's far too early to be talking about must-win games but at home Charlton have to pick up three points more often than not.  Exeter try to play a more passing game than Megson's monoliths which should suit the likes of Stephens and Jackson.  They haven't been scoring much either with former Addicks trailist Guillem Bauzà their top scorer with two. And one of those was in the cup.

Benson's twisted finger fractures may still keep him out while Cedric Evina picked up an injury in a midweek reserve game.  The lesser spotted Alonso is close to being ready but it would seem that Tuesday's league cup game is more likely to see his debut than Saturday's league encounter.

Danny Green has a virus but was expected to train today and tomorrow.  If he is fit then he would seem guarenteed to give more options from the bench alongside Sullivan, Cort, Pritchard and Euell.

The starting XI should be unchanged but will the tactics?  Two home games on the trot we have let leads slip and three points become one.  Powell will be up against a young but very shrewd coach and how each responds to changes in the game and in formation could be key.

Charlton to get their mojo back and win 2 - 0

PS   If you've ever thought Addicks fans could be just a little negative or
pessimistic cop a butchers at this for what some Exeter fans predict.

  • 2-0 Charlton.
  • Nice piece and link Henry.
I think the scrumpy may be flowing down there with one prediction of 52-15 to us.
I just cant see our back four letting in 15.

3-1, we will concede from a set play.

I do get the feeling that a number of our fans, the ones who were so negative about CP last season, are itching to say, 'I told you so' when a few results dont go our way. This game wont be it, though.

    Hopefully
  • Cor, I didn't think fans could be THAT negative about their team, never mind the opposition.
I think this could be a tricky one to navigate for us. Although I am predicting a 3-0 win, it wont be all plain sailing.
We will sneak the first half 1-0 after taking time to get into the game following the Monday hangover and then second half it will open up a bit.
Scorers I reckon will be BWP to net his fifth of the season, Taylor against his former club and Hollands to score first goal in Charlton shirt. I HOPE!

On another note. Miguel Llera has gone to Brentford after short spell at Blackpool.

  • Great preview Henry, blimey those Exeter fans are in a bad place at the moment, I thought we could be negative.

We need to get back on track and I think we will so I am going 2-0 to the Addicks

  • Also, Its a good chance for us to capitalise with the other fixtures putting Sheff U away to Scunthorpe and MK Dons away to Sheff W. So could be hard games for them two and I reckon Powell will make sure the players know that before they go out on Saturday!
  • 3-1. Confidence back. Hayes, Jackson and Euell
  • Need a win to lay down a marker and show that we are still the team to beat.  3-0
  • 2-1 Charlton Waggy Bwp
  • 2-0 Charlton.

Scunny have not won all season so I think this will be a comfortable away win for Sheff Utd another reason for us to get 3 points.

  • Loved "Megson's monoliths".

Exeter will be much easier fare for us but would like to see Green start with Waggy having a well deserved rest.

    2-1.

We are always rubbish for the last ten minutes and Saint Chris seem to enjoy unnecessary nail-biting with Jason brought on to prance around the corner flag.

    Adds some drama I suppose...
  • 2-0 jacko & bwp
  • I want to see a more attacking side. Benson in for Hayes (if Benson is fit)  and Green for Wagstaff. Let's see lots of accurate passing from Stephens, Hollands and Jackson as well as crosses galore from Green. The team was far too much on the backfoot V Wednesday

  • Corr their negativity is awful! 3-0 charlton! BWP first hat-trick!
  • I havent seen us win a game yet this season, so technically its my fault, howver I predict a tunraround 3-0 to the Haddocks  BWP, Green, Taylor.

  • Backlash 5-0 even Jason bags one.
  • 1-1.

Maybe a 1-0 win, but I have a feeling it will be tougher than some on here think.

  • To be fair to the City fans they're having a terrible start to the season. I can only imagine the nonsense we'd be reading on here if we'd had a similar start.
I would like a 3-1 revenge game please CP. Their one will come from yet more bad corner defending. If I were a coach I'd fill the ball with explosives and set it on a 10 second timer. Then they'd clear the bloody thing.
Our 3 will be BWP with a brace and Taylor with a set piece header.

15,534. 300 or so of them City.
  • i would like to see a few changes, i feel that wiggins is a weak link in the defence and would like to see evina if fit come in for him. as exeter are quite a physical team, i would like in see cort come in at the back in place of solly and move morrison to right back, i would bring green in for waggie, think waggie would be a great impact player of the bench as shown v reading and start benno up front instead of hayes. i would like to see a more attack minded bench. so my team and bench would be:

    gk- hamer
rb- morro, cb-cort, cb- taylor, lb- evina
rm- green, cm- hollands, cm- stephans, lm- jacko
    st- bwp, st- benson

bench- sully, solly, alonso(if fit), waggy, hayes
  • When looking at our fixtures our start looked reasonably tough and I thought this would be the game where it started to look a bit easier. Despite 2 home draws, nobody can be disapointed with our start and if we are going to be serious about the automatics this has to be 3 points. I think it will be though unsure how comfortable. I'll go for a hard fought 2 nil.

Can't see why Powell would want to make so many changes to a team that is unbeaten and generally playing well.

Hayes is a better player and foil for BWP than Benson IMO, Solly has been playing very well so why is he dropped, and why break up the Taylor/Morrison partnership that is looking good.

Wiggins I could see but Evina is injured.  Wagstaff is playing well and doesn't deserve to be dropped.  Let Green be the impact player off the bench in a league game before he gets in ahead of Waggy.

Sorry, too much change for change sake.
  • Wiggins has been solid but unspectacular so far but he was really excellent last season and requires a little perserverance I think. The midfeld have been excellent and have to start but if the game is slipping away from them abit like what happened in teh second half on Monday, I'd like to see Powell not be afraid to bring Pritchard on - he has looked an effective and dynamic player from what I have seen so far.

Sorry Muttley cant agree with you on Wiggins, I think he is the weakest of the back four, gives the ball away more than most and often mis-kicks with the ball finishing up out of play.

Maybe a lack of confidence as I am sure there is a player in there but solid is a word I would not use, Taylor & Morrison are "solid"

  • 2-0 bwp and hollands to score
