  • I only managed to catch the first half, which was pretty promising, as I had a 6 a side game. If only Stephens could have stuck that sitter away it might have been a better outcome. Thought we were just a bit rushed towards the end of the half and allowed Weds to get into the match. Maybe it was the added pressure of Sky, their shape, who knows? Our quick passing and the pace of runners off the ball really caught them off guard at the start, hopefully the more the team play together the more consistent that'll become and we can do it for 90mins. Not a terrible outcome, but should always be looking for 3 at home.
  • First time ive seen them in the flesh. Think most of the comments are too negative. Compared to a Parky team this one gets a foot in and then finds a red shirt. And the fact is that their goal should not have stood. Clear
Foul on Hamer. The ref knew something had happened, hesitated and looked at his Lino but that lino was useless all night.
Dale Stephens on the night didn't deliver and that's probably why we faded in the second half but Wednesday hardly made Hamer work apart
    from fouling him at corners.

It's a work in progress, of course it is, but I like the look of it.
  • Again not to worried and if we converted our chances we'd have won. Think they only had one.... from which they scored.

However, a little concerned that it seems quite easy to 'do a job' on our midfield and that we are, for all the talent, a bit lighweight there.

Thought for the first 30 we were fantastic, especially Waggy (bar his crossing) but at the end and with confidence low we lacked an outlet the pressure them.

  • Pretty much as I predicted, draw against what is a strong league one side

I just don't think we are as good as what some people think, the middle of the park was poor tonight and Hayes and Wagstaff are too inconsistent for my liking. 30 mins isn't enough.

Back 4 played well, BWP played well, Jackson played well the rest were meh and I never thought I would say that we missed Elliott, Hamer just doesn't look like a keeper to me his positioning is wrong even at the quiet moments and as for the goal...
  • We need a decent striker who is of the calibre of a starting forward and can really push Hayes and BWP. Second half was poor and I thought Stephens should have come off with Pritchard coming on to give us a chance to chase the game more. Think Hollands did well without as much support as he should have had. Have to move on and learn and sadly I think Euell is not the answer and we either use Benson or have to increase our options.
  • I blame Semedo for getting us to kick towards the covered end first half. A known tactic called by all ex-addicks and Millwall....just check out all the results when this happens.

As for the match...we played well in patches and nothing to worry about.

  • As for the goal?

He was fouled. And Wednesday were so pleased they got away with it, they tried it again a couple of times.

More or less right. We were kicking the wrong way. Was the wind a factor in that decision? I don't know who won the toss.

Thought Morrison and Wiggins played their best games so far, and Solly was excellent for me...for a lad with a handful of games under his belt he is getting better and better.

  • Goals or no goals, Waggy cannot start for us if he is going to check back and spin over and over again in a good crossing area, and then put the ball in around the back of the goal.

As soon as they scored, we panicked, and decided to launch balls up top to Hayes and BWP who were being mauled in mid air, and Stephens went completely missing in the end, he's a real 60 minute man right now, and a bit of a luxury in the centre of the park.

We need to be braver with the bench, Francis can play full and centre back, so why don't we stick him on the bench with Hughes, Waggy and Benno, and start Green (real shame he was ill today)

One more thing, I don't care how tired you are, when there is only a couple of minutes left, you are attacking and the next goal guarantees the 3 points, can you at least show a little bit of urgency?! There were too many times today when our players just didnt seem to anticipate or react to second balls, and the set pieces seemed a bit off too.

Still if someone offered you a start of P6 W4 D2 L0 3 months ago, you would have taken it in a flash, so we can't bee too negative right now!
  • P.S. Thought the booing of Semedo was idiotic, glad to see a lot of our fans give him a generous clap when he was subbed. What was Semedos big crime, always giving us 100%, and fulfilling his contract? He is with Wednesday now, we have moved on, get over it.

  • Deep defending gifted them 2nd half, no input from CP to change game. Euell offers nothing. Lack of height at set pieces will kill us again and again. Not sure Hamer was fouled any more than any dozen incidents in box.
  • We got a point so move onward and upwards to the next match.  Great opening 20 minutes and first half we bossed it, but Megon proved that he was an experienced manger with a bit of nous and our game fell away second half.  CP is going to have to learn to lift the team from the sidelines when we go flat, Euell coming on with 13 mins to go was too little too late.

Not sure why comparisons are made with Parkies team, needs to stand or fail in its own right.
  • The foul on our keeper for their goal was ridiculous he was so blatantly pushed from the cross it is criminal
  • Have to say, the most disapponting aspect for me was that we didn't look to push on in the last 15-20mins. We needed to be bold at that point. Looked like we were overly concerned with not losing.
  • Was buzzing at the start. Cant believe how small the crowd was as the covered end was rammed. It was rocking and we were flying after the goal. Wednesday fans on their own board were saying that if they concede earlier they will get spanked and we should have wrapped this up.

At half time i thought it was pretty much game over. Wednesday kicking away from their fans should never have got back into that game.

I'm a piss poor player who's only played amateur football but under no circumstance should a set piece flash across the goal line. If Hamer was fouled i take it back but from what i saw he went for the ball, didnt call and the header took it over him. Morrison was then left all alone on the goal line. Shocking defending and something urgently needs sorting. If we're serious about getting promoted and the players and Powell want to keep making them noises then we need to stop conceding from set pieces.

Considering Wednesday are supposed to be strongest on the wings I thought Wiggins and Solly looked assured and both had good performances. The 2 centre backs didnt really put a foot wrong all night. Assured probably sums it up as Wednesday never looked like scoring from open play.

Jackson was anonymous all evening. Needed our captain tonight. Hollands was woeful in possession and Stephens was bossed by Prutton and Semedo. Wagstaff showed poor decision making in the second half but I guess he will learn from that. I would like to have seen Hollands taken off, Jackson moved into the middle and Pritchard bought onto the wing. We sorely lacked energy and anyone who saw the Reading game could see weve got players waiting to come in and do a job. Would also kick the asses of the players who start each week. No disrespect intended but if Orient or Oldham had showed up with Semedo and Prutton in the middle and bossed the midfield like that we would be incensed. We shouldnt be rolling over like that against any opposition in this league.

Hayes desperately needs a home goal. Looks a different player away from the Valley and BWP was lively again. BWP was given scraps to feed off and when he did get the ball the midfield were still on our back line showing no urgency to get forward.

We were really let down by the midfield who showed no urgency, a lack of creativity and no desire to win any ball, 1st or second. They are average again this season and there will be many better teams who come here this season so hopefully that is their token bad performance out of the way

  • I think people are wrong about the attendance being poor, partly because they don't understand some of the detail underneath it and partly because they have unrealistic expectations.

Evening kick-offs have become a problem for us as we have dropped down the league - TV exacerbates this. Our gates usually include 1,000 comps for primary schools, there were none tonight. We did do them for the first two games, but made a decision not to do Wednesday when it was still on a Saturday. It was too late once the game was switched.

Wednesday brought 691, down from 2,200 last year, for very obvious reasons. Two coachloads didn't make it because of traffic problems.

Add the comps and a Saturday turnout from Wednesday and you've suddenly got 16,500, which people would probably regard as OK. But the paying Charlton turnout is the same.

Oh yes, and I'd like to see Cedric Evina at least on the bench, but that's another subject!

A tad disappointed, though it broadly panned out how i thought the game was going to be. They are a relatively strong hard-working unit, and we managed to get caught up in an itsy-bitsy low-quality battle rather than trying to play to our strengths.

    Positives

    - BWP once again proved give him half a chance, he will take it. A class act at this level
    - We look like we have two proper centre halves who can do the industrial stuff well and look like they can improve further
    - Wiggins (to me) had a far better showing than in the matches i had previously seen.

    Negatives
    - Hayes just isn't looking at the races at the moment, and like many i'm not sure Euell is the answer
    - We kind of forgot how to play and seemed to run out of ideas with half hour to go
    - Really thought our two were going to boss the centre mid match up, but sadly didn't think they did

Long old season, not reading too much into things yet. Strong home form though is key to getting promoted, and the last two games have shown that we still have a fair way to go with that.
  • Typical Megson team - dull, physical, bit dirty. All the hoof ball second half was pointless against them - no wonder the mecurial Stephens disappeared! Michael Morrison looked particularly strong.
  • wonder if people will still predict us to win every game 4-0? that was awful. Can't see us or them being up there come end of the season
  • First time I've seen us play 90 mins this season.

Must admit I was expecting more. Thought we looked like we'd score when we got bodies forward, but was utterly surprised at how we didn't seem willing to do that.

That being said, we had just about enough chances to win the game. Wednesday didn't have a chance all game. And they scored from a set-piece.

Not a game to draw conclusions from.

  • Glad to hear some aren't too depressed after tonight. I've really tried to be level headed with regard to our promotion chances, strength in depth, 'star' players etc... Tonight we drew to a team that will at least be in playoff contention, who have a decent squad and have a manager who is known for making it very tough for the opposition. It's a little disappointing given that we played so well in the first 20 or so minutes, and we can go on about how if Stephens put the sitter away then we would probably be looking at 3 points, but it in reality it is not a terrible result. Still unbeaten, 100% away from home, BWP is doing his job, as is the defence (maybe a little more work on set piece at Sparrows needed), but more importantly there are still a HUGE amount of games left to play. Looking forward to Exeter this weekend even more after tonight, CP will address the little issues i'm sure.
  • They had Jermaine Johnson missing who is arguably their best player. They had their number keeper missing who (quite possibly) would have saved bradleys goal. They have Chris O grady missing who would probably be starting. They were missing their first choice left back and their first choice left winger.

we are going to be facing far harder teams than that and I'm struggling to see how we will match them with performances like that and Scunthorpe.
  • Not as negative as most on here, i thought we looked dominant until their goal and we created far more chances than they did. We are not going to win every game over a long season and we appear to have strength in depth judged by the carling cup report. My biggest concerns at the moment are the keeper, not convinced about hamer as yet, and the selections on the bench. Particularly at home I would like to see us with at least 2 attacking options from the bench that could change the game, last night I didn't think we had any. Evina and Benno should have been there for me.
  • For me, we need a younger zippier forward (Cody Macdonald type. oh) instead of Jason Euell to come on. Crikey, he looked about 50! and isn't gonna cut it up front for me.

Bar that we fell into last seasons habits in the 2nd half of panic and hoof.

Overall, not that fussed, think we'll be strong enough to go up if we keep Hollands and Stephens fit.

I couldn't go last night as eldest starts school this morning and was sorting him out. Bet there were hardly any kids U16 there.

  • gotta say disapponited with Powelly, our midfield was crying out for Pritchards energy in the second half, we have a decent squad let's utilise it
  • Disappointing in the end, and all the more so given the great start.

Really thought the game was there for the taking, but some credit to Wednesday in that they got back into it - change of formation with the first sub? - and started to out battle us.

As others have said, Stephens in particular didn't have an effective game and we seemed to end up bypassing midfield a lot of the time.

Would have preferred to have seen Pritchard come on, if only because he might have shaken things up a bit.

Not the end of the world, but perhaps a timely reminder not to get too carried away with what has still been a good start to the season.
  • I thought it was game that would be won in centre midfield and was really looking forward to the Hollands/Stephens Prutton/Semedo match up. Before kick off I was convinced this was our strength and it seemed the Wednesday fans thought the same about their's. However apart from the first 20 minutes in which we definitely had the momentum and edged it out I felt the rest of the game wasn't really played there at all. Both pairings picked up scraps but other than that they seemed to be missed out by both teams.

Plaaayer and I both felt that our bench looked weak and I'm convinced it's the sort of game that having a Green, Alonso or Evina waiting to come on could really have changed the outcome as we looked devoid of ideas to open them up.

I really worried when Stephens missed the chance early on, I've seen it so many times when we miss a big big chance and it ultimately costs us.

Overrall though I'm not particularly worried, I don't think a point at home to a team who will definitely be in play off contention is disastrous. I'd say we definitely need to beat Exeter on Saturday though to keep the pace, I think the top 2 teams are both going to be there or there abouts come May so not letting them get too far ahead now is important.

  • Sheff Wednesday made it difficult for us -tried to stop us and suceeded by working their socks off and were phyiscal but not unfair. Sad to see a genuine big club have so little skill in it though - we tried to play but disapointingly most didn't come off but can't recall them trying anything creative. I think we have a question mark about how we deal with physical fit limited sides and Chrissy has to have a think about that going forwards as there will be a fair few of those in this league. Can't recall seeing opponents create so little though but they stopped us creating too much too. They got lucky with Jacksons flick on from the corner for the goal -they were never going to score from open play. Thought we started to tire and with 20 mins to go the midfield needed fresh legs. The pivotal moment was Stephens shooting over- keep it down -2-0 game over. Oh well, on to Saturday -still well placed.
  • decent first half, poor second, Stephens miss was key, I didn't particularly think they were bossed by prutton and semedo at all.

I disagree with others on here, as personally thought both full backs were poor, I'd give solly and waggy a rest and play hughes and green if both available now to be honest.

I think green would've made the difference last night if available.

the first 11 needs a freshen up I think with a couple of new faces, they've been superb so far but now's the time to rest a couple, especially as we've got the players to do it.
  • 1st half we were better and should've been 2 up, Megson imo showed a complete lack of belief in his team by making a change so early, especially with only 6 games played in the season!

2nd half they pressured us and we resorted to long ball, it looked like we was too scared to pass the ball in fear of getting clobbered. Lack of ideas, probably would've kept Hayes on instead of Euell, just a lack of impact available on the bench. Stephens was pretty much annoymous last night but he provided the winner vs Bury, hopefully Alonso is fit soon and can start making the bench, if he was there last night he would've been brought on. Same with Benson.

I think our defence looks very strong imo, doesn't get beaten in the air or does the ball get in behind them which is very encouraging.

Wednesday lack creativity in their side, can't see them getting auto's on that showing, but if they work hard every week they are a tough team to beat. I clapped Semedo off and nice to see everyone else did in the end.

Also nice to see rational thinking here, 6 games in, unbeaten still, we create chances but just not finishing them, defence looks stronger than it has done for years, and hopefully Alonso/Benson/Green can add to the team when fit.

I know in the pre match thread people have been expecting us to win by 3 or 4, but we're Charlton that doesn't happen here! Only 120 points left to play for...things to work on and better to come imo.
