Just watched this on 4OD. Sadening but not really that surprising, and I'm not entirely sure they pinned them down as doing anything illegal, just showed how easy the rules are to circumnavigate and tbh they seemed a bit of an amateurish bunch of chancers, not sure any serious players would be duped by them.
Big question of the night, who the feck are Barnsley Town?
Just watched it after spending the night trying to work out via this thread what was going on. As said by a couple people, not quite as groundbreaking/shocking as I thought it was going to be. So very close to home as well, aren't we linked to the British Virgin Islands or something? Just waiting for the bloke on twohundredpercent.com to write an article on it. Always a good read.
Sadly the program was less of a "revelation" but more of a "afformation" of what has happened to our glorious game. Real football dissapeared along with my waistline and dreams of my youth around the early to mid eighties IMO. Excellent job by Brian Robson though, all he needed to do at the end was take a shotgun and blow his own toes off.
The bit about them only being about for a couple of years with minimal investment , get to the Prem and having it on their toes was the bit that really rung home with the guys that have brought us. Its100% their aim as i understand it.
We should adopt the American law on businesses who owns what, what they can do or not and what the penalties are. Its much tougher than ours which i think Mr Murdock will find out.
As sad as it is and we've all known it for ages. Robson summed it up with the 'football isn't a sport anymore, it's a business'
My dad quoted the above in 1985 how right he was!! Does anyone know if this is repeated on on-line to watch? Cheers
you can watch it on 4OD.
Robson came across as a puppet who's there purely for who he is, rather than what he can bring to the table. Clinging on to his own self-importance....."I'm world ambassador for Manchester United" . Louis Armstrong never blew that hard.
Surely Robbo should have smelt a rat when they were insisting they wanted him as manager. That was what I call the "Beadle Moment" when Jeremy used to come out dressed as a council official and claim that they were going to install a pink toilet halfway up the front of some enraged punters house and he had to allow members of the public to scramble up there for a shit and provide velvet toilet tissue. It's the point where the mark generally realised the whole thing was daft.
The one thing that was most worrying of all was the amount of clubs owned and no one knows who actually owns them. I knew there were quite a few but not as many as they through out in the programme. The football league saying we don't have enough money to research the owners makes a whole mockery of the fit and proper persons process.
Am I being to simplistic by saying can't they change the rules so that all owners, financiers, shareholders etc. must be disclosed in full? Or are they just too scared to shake the very fragile house of cards at the moment?
But if you don't know who they are, how can you ensure full disclosure ?
99% of this country's assets are probably owned and run from Berlin, Beijing, New York, Moscow and Jerusalem .. we are a banana 'republic' with not even a banana tree
Do you have any evidence to back up that rather stupid claim?
Stupid ... of course I dont, the topic is secrecy and the ownership of many many UK enterprises are shrouded in secrecy .. it's the economy stupid
Just watched it. Pretty murky stuff but doesn't surprise me much.
Robson and the Thai bloke definitely over egging the pudding to me.
As for the implications for us. Well I trust Murray and Varney to a large extent. Clearly the way our ownership is structured makes it opaque as to who is the ultimate financial beneficial owner of our club.
You can see though why, with a three to five year business plan, investors hope to cash in on their investment by buying an under-performing club with a big fan base/catchment area, and catapulting it into the premier league where they can exit with a significant profit. No investment is risk free though.

An interesting post. A lot of money has been pumped into the club since the takeover. Let's hope that IF CAFC has been bought as a development project that when it comes time to sell we are not sold out of the frying pan into the fire. However, the way things are going with increasing scepticism and a demand for a more 'open and less secretive' society, the secret may be out in the open before any sale takes place
My personal feeling is that both Jimenez and Slater wanted to own a club, Charlton was the club they have decided to go for. Now between them they needed money and as the banks are not going to go near football for a very long time they needed a cash rich backer (friend) to lend out this money. They will have to repay some day and I am sure what they are hoping for is not to have to sell up to do that, but make money from selling on some of our young developed players. Hopefully not all of them mind!
Funny bunch aren't they? I don't really understand why they are wetting themselves so much that a "character" like Mandaric is at the helm of their club, like it's a good thing. Still, I spose at least they know who owns them - we are just guessing.
Was speaking to someone last season - When we was talking about slater & jiminez - A name kept popping up in the convo someone called kevin cash - Apparently he is the one with all the money worth around 500 mill -

Yada yada yada. You could have come up for a better name for the bloke with all the money.Far too obvious.
Nothing very surprising including that Robson is a whore willing to sell his name for money.
Seemed a brokerage fiddle to me. They talk up their contacts etc and when they have your money they then contact a club well known to be in the s*** (ie Sheff Utd) and say "we can introduce a buyer to you". Take a % at both ends and then disappear back to Bangkok to find another mug punter.
Does it raise questions about who owns Charlton and why? Well, yes but only the same questions some of us have been asking since day one.
1. Who owns the Club? 2. What is the Business Plan? 3. How much is the investment? 4. What are the plans for the Valley? 5. What are the plans for the Academy? (one area where we do have more clarity) 6. What is the exit plan?
If only Mr Slater was doing a Q & A at a supporters' group sometime soon!
Just been reading through the owstalk forum. I can't see why they're so smug about it to be honest. It's not as if Sheff Utd have been caught doing anything wrong.
As far as charlton are concerned, Hopefully this isn't the case with our ownership but a year ago if someone was to say that they wanted to buy our club, Get us double promotion to the premiership before selling the club to make a profit, would any of us really say "no thanks, we're fine"?
Yeah, there's a lot of things wrong here and it does need investigating, but as most members of governing bodies are themselve corrupt then it's unlikely.
I support charlton not football. If it wasnt for Charlton I wouldnt be into football. Its just pure business. What goes on behind the scenes seems sounds a bit depressing in terms of what football should be.

This. I hate football. My only interest these days goes no further than my love for charlton.

I have absolutely no doubt that if this programme would have come out 12 to 18 months ago we would have been mentioned.

Joe Sim strikes me as a bit of an asian Del boy.
Robson is a proper Rodney.
Just watched a bit of this after sky + it.
