It was Sweaty Balmer who wore No.1 IIRC and I think Bob Bolder was No.2?
Would that be right, I'm sure it was Balmer who got 1 and then then first choice keeper ended up 2. I think it must have been Bolder because Mickey Salmon would have been given a mcuh higher number.
29th october 1995 was a sunday and we won 0-1 at luton .... i thought i had a coup buying goal scorers shirt numbers (spread betting) around 23 cos the bookies didn't realise we had squad numbers ... i lost on the bet can't remember who scored for us
Used to love Sweaty, btw. Proper cult Charlton hero. I remember being at Stoke away in about 96. Sweaty's Dad was in the crowd, presumably unexpectedly, and was down at the front of the stand waving and shouting to get Sweaty's attention during the warm up. Sweaty looked proper embarrassed when he saw him, like a school kid who gets waved at by his Nan when he's out with his mates trying to look hard.

Legend, over 200 games played for Charlton , and over 6 foot tall, ticked all the boxes.
Just watched the highlights of Bristol C game. Sullivan made 3 excellent & brave challenges/stops. This reconfirms for me that he should be given first dibs & then it's up to him to lose the jersey & for Elliot to reclaim it.
NB Elliot wasn't at fault for the goal, that was purely down to Morrison's slowness/misjudgement.
I wasn't at the Millwall game today but it sounds like Elliot had a mere and Sullivan has been more concisent in pre-season so I reckon we should go with Sullivan for the first game
Sullivan should be num 1 - I was at the game today elliot was havein a bad game didn't even move when there 4th goal went in - at times his kicking was terrible
oh come on 125 million appearances in and we have to realise we are just unlucky that everytime someone has a freekick it just happens to be the worldy moment in their career and so we have to accept that these things happen and one day we"ll realise that thankfully zico has retired and we're just a really unlucky club and that lightening will not strike 8 times
Sullivan has got to be number one. Elliot needs to get his head right and build his confidence up on the training pitch and maybe the odd cup game. The coaching staff need to sort out certain aspects to like commanding the wall for set pieces as that can all be learnt.
Love Elliot as a Charlton boy and a great lad by all accounts but too much at stake for niceties and sentimentality. Not digging him out but Sullivan is the man that needs to be in between the sticks next week and itll be down to Elliot to win his place back.

This. Robbie let both those freekicks in. I think he could've done much better. Especially the last one. He gave Boazza 3 feet of goal for no reason. I love the fucker cos he is a red, but Sully should get the number 1.
As regards the original question, I haven't seen enough of Sullivan to make a judgement - Powell and Roberts will. no doubt, be making a decision based on what they see in training. We'll have to trust them
& none of us have unless we have a habit of watching millsmalls reserve team, he was their 3rd choice keeper for a reason I guess ?
I think the problem is Bob, Elliot has been the main man for 2 and a half seasons now and I think he's stagnated in that period, possibly even gone backwards a little bit. He still hasn't stayed on top of his weight, he's no more commanding of his area now than when he made his debut and his kicking is as inconsistent as it always was. We probably should have seen improvements by now and it's hard to think it was a total coincidence that in each of the last two season there was a spell towards the end where he was out of the team and on both occassions our defensive record suddenly improved. It would also seem that we've conceded more goals in pre-season with Elliot in goal than with Sully.
I think you are right that none of us have seen enough of Sully to truly judge him yet, but in his few appearances it was clear he was pretty strong in a couple of the areas that Elliot has been weak, i.e. communicating loud and clear with his back 4 and taking full charge of his area when required there are bound to be areas where Robbie has the upper hand too, but it's debateble whether a better organised back 4 who have a better trust in their keeper might stop more goals than Robbie saves with his occassionaly worldies.
I like Elliot and still see potential in him, but it's clear the case against him is gathering evidence and support so he's got to start showing he's moving towards his potential otherwise we have to assume he's actually peaked and if thats the case, imo, we should look elsewhere as he's peaked short of where we really need him to. It's a big season for him.
Sullivian now, hopefully he can position himself right whie a free kicks being taken! I haven't seen sullivan play but when he played for us he put in an overall performance didn't he?
Elliot has been beaten too many times by shots from outside the areas (not just free kicks) also as already has been mentioned on here is his failure to command his area.
Also his appalling injury record is a concern. Many goalkeepers can go 3 or 4 seasons without missing a match. Elliot seems to have 3 or 4 injuries every season which is a disruptive to the team.
I think that the whole goalkeeper issue is a real concern. It's fairly obvious that RE does not command the support of a hefty percentage of of Charlton supporters, me included and if we are honest none of us know too much about Sullivan in order to assess his ability. What I can say and of course it's just my opinion is that if Sullivan is worse than Elliot according to CP then we are in bother. I also don't see this one being resolved until possibly it's too late. For me I would like to see another GK come in but can't see that happening.
I would like Elliot to come good but unfortunately I don't see that happening, like you I think he seems to have gone backwards. Likewise as I have said on countless occasions Sullivan was 3rd choice for a reason & I wonder if the areas where he shines are enough to warrent a starting place,no doubt in time we shall see. Like Shooters i would like to see a new keeper come in of proven experience leaving Elliot & Sullivan to fight for a place on the bench. I just don't think CP has paid enough attention to a specialised position where every mistake is highlighted.

I'd forgotten about that BFR/oohaah!

Yep...but which year? This isn't a quiz question, I genuinely can't remember.
