I caught the last 20 minutes, extra time and penalties last night.
It was enjoyable to watch and I've seen far worse at The Valley and elsewhere. A welcome lack of the histrionics which blight the male game made a pleasant change and if wayne Rooney had scored from a corner in the way that Japanese girl did the commentators would still be having orgasms.
It was a great game to watch. Got to hand it to Japanese girls coming back twice. In fact it was better than some of the drivel served up last year in SA.
Superb effort by the Japanese ladies. Their coach was brilliant. He decided to change tactics and adopt a buddhist approach to the final. He told the girls that possession is not important. Before the final he realised they had never beaten the USA. (Its only a few years since they lost 9-0 and 7-0 to them). The USA were very focussed on possession and he allowed them to have the ball and got his Japanese team to play through the gaps, to be reactive, to be flexible.
Japanese Ladies football only became professional around 1986 Their player of the tournament started in the team when she was 15, she is now 33 so has been a constant for 18 years!
